Fiji's light does one thing that will shape your entire wedding day: it goes. Twilight at 18 degrees south lasts roughly 22 minutes, against 40 or more in Auckland or Melbourne. Sunset at Nadi runs from about 5:44pm in June to about 6:44pm in December. Everything below follows from that.

This is the practical production guide — timing, light, weather, gear, law and briefing. For the survey of styles and suppliers, start at the cluster hub, Fiji wedding photography and film.

What time should the ceremony actually start?

Work backwards from sunset, not forwards from lunch.

Sun times for Nadi, calculated for 2026 at Fiji Time (UTC+12, no daylight saving):

DateSunriseGolden hour beginsSunsetCivil dusk (light gone)
21 March6:14am5:52pm6:21pm6:43pm
21 June6:39am5:13pm5:44pm6:08pm
21 September6:01am5:38pm6:07pm6:28pm
21 December5:32am6:13pm6:45pm7:09pm

Three things to read off that table.

Sunset barely moves. Across the whole year it shifts about an hour, from 5:44pm to 6:44pm. If you have planned a European or Australian summer wedding before, you are used to light until 9pm. Fiji does not do that in any month.

Golden hour starts around half an hour before sunset. Roughly 29 to 32 minutes, year-round. That is your portrait window and it is not negotiable.

From sunset you have about 22 minutes. Then it is dark, properly dark, not dusk.

The working rule: ceremony start two and a half to three hours before sunset. That gives you an hour of ceremony and congratulations, a family-group block, then couple portraits landing exactly in the golden half hour, with enough slack that a 20-minute delay does not cost you the pictures. A June wedding ON the Coral Coast therefore starts at about 3pm; a December wedding at about 4pm.

If you want first light instead, sunrise sits between 5:32am and 6:39am depending on the month. It is a real option for an elopement and almost never workable for a group.

Why is the light so different from home?

Because of the angle the sun takes to the horizon. Near the equator the sun's path is close to vertical, so it drops through the horizon quickly; at higher latitudes it slides down at a shallow angle and twilight stretches out. That is the whole explanation, and it is why every photographer who has shot in Fiji builds the timeline backwards.

There is a second effect worth knowing. Midday tropical sun is close to overhead and extremely hard — deep eye sockets, blown highlights on white fabric, squinting. A midday beach ceremony is the single most common avoidable mistake in Fiji wedding photography. If you must, find shade, and tell your photographer well in advance so they can bring fill.

What does the season do to the plan?

Tourism Fiji splits the year into a wet season from November to April, averaging 25–26°C with short afternoon downpours, and a dry season from May to October, averaging 23–24°C with most days between 19 and 28°C.

The more useful split is east-west. Nadi and the Coral Coast sit on the leeward, drier side of Viti Levu; Suva sits on the windward side and is substantially wetter all year.

MonthNadi (mm)Suva (mm)
January365355
April190310
July50130
October85240

Those monthly figures come from a secondary climate reference, not from the Fiji Meteorological Service directly — the Met Service publishes Nadi Airport normals only as a non-extractable PDF and does not list a Suva station on its climate normals page. Treat them as indicative of the pattern rather than precise.

Cyclone season is official and worth planning around: the Fiji Meteorological Service states the tropical cyclone season runs November to April, with peak activity January to March. Cyclone season and your Fiji wedding covers the risk properly.

For photography specifically: a wet-season afternoon downpour in Fiji is usually short and often produces the best light of the day immediately afterwards. Build 30 minutes of slack into the timeline and it becomes an opportunity rather than a disaster.

Can you fly a drone?

Yes, with conditions that are stricter than most visiting photographers expect. The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji sets the rules:

  • Maximum 200 feet (about 61 m) above ground level unless specifically approved — half the 400 ft limit used in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
  • No operation within 5 km of an international aerodrome or 3 km of a domestic one. Nadi International's 5 km exclusion covers a meaningful slice of the Nadi coastline.
  • Commercial work requires prior written authorisation from CAAF via form OP 138, submitted with training certification and liability insurance to drones@caaf.org.fj. CAAF states fees apply from $365.63. Recreational registration (form OP 137) does not cover paid filming.
  • Visual line of sight at all times, and CAAF's prohibited-areas list expressly includes resorts and hotels among public areas.

Ask your photographer or videographer to show you their CAAF authorisation, not their drone. Drone footage at a Fiji wedding: rules and reality has the full position.

What does a Fiji wedding photographer cost?

None of the twelve above publishes a rate on a publicly readable page. We checked every one. Several link to a pricing guide that requires an enquiry. We are not going to print a range we cannot evidence.

What we can give you is the hidden cost that catches couples out, because one venue publishes it plainly. Plantation Island Resort states that for coverage extending beyond 3:30pm, the photographer will miss the last ferry to the mainland and will require accommodation at an additional FJ$350 per person including dinner and breakfast.

That is the shape of the problem at any island venue. Your photographer's day rate is not the whole number. Ask, before you book either the venue or the photographer:

  • Does the photographer need to stay overnight, and who pays?
  • Is there a transfer or boat cost, and is it per person including a second shooter?
  • Is a supplier meal charged at guest rate or a lower rate?
  • Are there travel days billed either side?

On the positive side, Plantation Island also publishes a genuinely helpful policy on external photographers: "we work with, and can suggest skilled local photographers who specialise in capturing the unique beauty of Fiji weddings, however, the choice is ultimately up to you." No other Fiji venue we checked publishes an exclusive-photographer clause or an outside-vendor fee — but equally, most publish nothing at all, so ask your venue in writing whether you can bring your own photographer before you sign anything.

What does the humidity do to the cameras?

This matters more than couples realise, and it is the reason a photographer who has shot in Fiji before is worth paying for.

Moving a cold camera from an air-conditioned bridal suite into 28°C and high humidity fogs the lens and, worse, the inside of the lens and the sensor chamber. Nikon's own guidance is blunt: sudden temperature changes cause condensation inside the device, and the remedy is to seal the camera in a case or bag before the change, not after. Professional practice adds desiccant to the bag and lets the gear warm up sealed, so condensation forms on the plastic rather than the glass.

Two consequences for your timeline. Gear needs time to acclimatise — no published source gives a fixed number of minutes, so ask your photographer what they allow. And lenses should not be changed outdoors in humid conditions, because moisture reaching the sensor is far worse than surface fogging. If your photographer is swapping lenses on a beach in February, they know something you do not, or they do not.

Salt and sand are the other half. Wipe-downs with clean fresh water, storage humidity kept below 70%, and a second body as insurance.

How do you brief a photographer for Fiji?

Five things, in an email, six weeks out:

  1. The timeline, with sunset marked on it. Not "ceremony 4pm" but "ceremony 4pm, sunset 6:07pm, golden hour from 5:38pm".
  2. The wet-weather plan, as confirmed by your venue in writing.
  3. The must-have shots, capped at ten. A list of forty is a list of none.
  4. Who is who — the family-group list with names, because a photographer cannot guess relationships across a hundred guests in fading light.
  5. Any cultural elements and how they should be treated. If a Fijian ceremony element, village group or lovo is part of your day, tell the photographer in advance what it is and what respect it is owed.

Next step

Fix the ceremony time against the sunset before you book anything else, because every other decision on the day hangs off it. Then read the hub, Fiji wedding photography and film, the Fiji wedding planning timeline for the months before, and the best time to get married in Fiji if you are still choosing a month.

Drone rules are guideline only and change — confirm current requirements with the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji before any flight. Sun times are calculated for Nadi and vary slightly across Fiji. Last reviewed 16 September 2026.
