Work backwards from three fixed points, not from the wedding date. The Fiji marriage licence is valid for 28 days once issued. The standard notice period is 21 consecutive days. And registries open roughly 8:30am to 3:00pm on weekdays only. Every other decision arranges itself around those three facts and your guests' flight bookings.

What actually has a deadline, and what only feels urgent?

Most wedding countdowns treat every task as equally time-critical. For a Fiji wedding, only a handful genuinely are.

Genuinely time-boundWhyConsequence of being late
Single status certificateIssued by your home authority; lead times vary and are outside your controlNo licence, no legal marriage
Divorce final order or death certificateMust be the final document, certifiedRegistry will refuse the application
Passport validityFiji asks for at least six monthsDenied boarding
Guest noticeGuests are buying international flights and a week off workAttrition

Notice of Intention or Special Licence21 days, or a written application to waive itNo ceremony
Celebrant bookingA limited pool of registered Fijian celebrantsNo officiant

Almost everything else — flowers, cake, styling, playlists — can be settled far later than the internet suggests, provided the supplier is booked.

18 to 12 months out: the decisions that constrain everything

Set the guest count first. It drives the venue, the budget and the transfer plan more than any other choice. Twenty guests and eighty guests are different weddings on different islands.

Choose the season before the date. Fiji's cyclone season runs November to April, with the Fiji Meteorological Service noting peak activity between January and February. The dry season, May to October, carries lower rainfall and lower risk. The best time to get married in Fiji has the month-by-month data.

Shortlist three properties in one region, not one property in three regions. Comparing a Denarau resort with a Yasawa island and a Taveuni lodge means comparing three different transfer plans, and you will never resolve it.

Ask each property the six pricing questions in the Fiji wedding cost guide before you fall in love with anywhere.

Save the date. For guests flying from New Zealand or Australia, twelve months' notice is what makes attendance possible rather than aspirational.

12 to 9 months: lock the immovable parts

9 to 6 months: paperwork begins

This is the point most couples underestimate.

Apply for your single status certificate now. It is issued by your home country's registry or foreign ministry, the process differs by country, and it is the one document you cannot hurry from an island. If either of you is divorced or widowed, locate the certified final order or death certificate in the same week.

Check both passports. Six months' validity beyond travel is what the Ministry of Immigration asks for. Renewals take longer than people expect.

Confirm your immigration position. Most wedding source markets are visa-exempt and marry on the Visitors Permit issued on arrival; others need a visitor visa in advance. The Fiji wedding visa guide sets out the whole picture, including why flying in paid suppliers is a different question entirely.

Send invitations with real cost guidance. Not just "Fiji, in October" — an indicative per-person cost, two accommodation price points, and the transfer plan. The Fiji wedding guest playbook covers what guests need to be told and when.

6 to 3 months: build the day

  • Menu tasting or menu selection, and the dietary list
  • Styling and florals confirmed; see Fiji wedding style and decor for what survives heat and wind
  • Hair and makeup trial booked, or reference images sent
  • Cake, entertainment and any traditional elements agreed — warrior escort, meke, village choir, serenaders
  • Transfers costed for every guest, both directions, including any suppliers travelling with you
  • Wet-weather plan confirmed in writing, with the specific alternative space named
  • Travel insurance for both of you, and a strong recommendation to guests to buy their own

Decide your Special Licence route now. If you will be in Fiji for fewer than 21 days before the wedding — which is almost everyone — you need the Special Licence to Marry, applied for in writing to the Registrar-General with an explanation and supporting evidence such as venue booking receipts and travel tickets. Your coordinator or resort will usually drive this, but it is your marriage and you should see the application.

3 months to 1 month: confirm, don't decide

Every task in this window should be a confirmation of something already agreed.

The document pack

Assemble this as a physical folder, and photograph every page onto your phone as well.

  • Both passports, valid six months beyond travel
  • Certified birth certificates
  • Single status certificates, certificates of search, or certificates of no legal impediment
  • Divorce final orders or death certificates, if applicable
  • Recent passport-size photographs of both parties
  • Photo ID for both witnesses
  • Venue contract and any receipts supporting a Special Licence application
  • Return or onward tickets and accommodation confirmation for immigration

The week of the wedding

Arrive earlier than feels necessary. The industry guidance is a minimum of three working days before the ceremony, and that is a floor, not a target. Registries close at weekends.

DayWhat happens
Day −5 to −4Arrive. Rest. Do nothing official on arrival day.
Day −3Registry visit, on a weekday, in the morning. Bring the whole document pack and both witnesses' ID.
Day −2Site walk with the coordinator; confirm ceremony position, sunset time and the wet-weather call. Welcome event if you are having one.
Day −1Rehearsal. Final numbers to the kitchen. Hand over rings, licence and vows to one named person.
Day 0The wedding.
Day +1Collect the marriage certificate, or confirm how and when it will reach you.

Set a wet-weather decision time and a named decision-maker, and tell the suppliers what it is. "We'll see how it looks" at 3pm is how a wedding ends up half-set-up in the rain.

The morning of

Very little is left. The point of the eighteen months is that the morning is boring.

  • Eat something. Drink water — Fiji is hot and the day is long.
  • Hand the rings, the licence and the vows to the person you named yesterday.
  • Get hair and makeup finished at least an hour before you think you need to.
  • Give both witnesses their ID and tell them where to be.
  • Put your phone somewhere else.

What is different about a Fiji timeline?

Three things, and they are the reason a domestic wedding checklist will let you down.

  1. The documents come from home and the ceremony happens abroad. Anything issued by your own government must be sorted before you fly, because there is no fixing it from a beach.
  2. Guests are buying flights, not petrol. Notice periods that would be generous domestically are tight internationally, particularly for guests flying from beyond New Zealand and Australia.
  3. The weather has a season, not a forecast. Choosing October rather than January is a bigger risk decision than any wet-weather plan you can write.

The verdict

  • Start with the guest count and the season. Everything else follows.
  • Begin the single status certificate at nine months. It is the only truly external dependency.
  • Use the Special Licence if you are in-country under 21 days, which you will be.
  • Arrive at least three working days before, on a weekday.
  • The licence lasts 28 days once issued. Do not let it be issued too early.

Next step: pick your month using the best time to get married in Fiji, then build the shortlist from Fiji wedding resorts A-Z and price it against what a Fiji wedding actually costs. Downloadable run sheets, budget sheets and guest-comms wording are collected in Fiji wedding tools and templates. Couples marrying with 30 guests or fewer should read eloping and renewing vows in Fiji first — the timeline compresses dramatically.
