Almost certainly not a special one. Fiji has no marriage visa and no marriage-specific permit. Couples from visa-exempt countries marry on the ordinary Visitors Permit stamped in the passport on arrival; everyone else marries on a standard visitor visa. What you genuinely need is a valid permit covering your whole stay, and the right documents for the licence.

Is there such a thing as a Fiji marriage visa?

No. The Fiji Ministry of Immigration publishes permit categories for visitors, work, students, residence and investors. Marriage is not one of them, and nothing in the Ministry of Justice's marriage guidance asks a visiting couple to hold a particular permit class.

What the marriage paperwork does ask for is a passport with a valid visa — meaning a valid, current permission to be in Fiji, whatever form that takes for your nationality. A Visitors Permit satisfies that.

This is worth stating plainly because a lot of destination-wedding advice implies otherwise. It does not. If you can lawfully enter Fiji as a tourist, you can lawfully marry there.

Which nationalities need a visa to enter Fiji at all?

Fiji operates a published visa-exemption list. The Ministry of Immigration states that citizens of the listed countries "are not required to obtain a Fiji visa when travelling to Fiji" but "will still need the relevant permits depending on the nature of their travel" — which for a wedding means the Visitors Permit issued at the border.

The list is long and includes Fiji's main wedding source markets. Rather than reproduce a list that changes, check the Ministry's own page before you book: it is the only version that is current on the day you travel.

For everyone else, Tourism Fiji states a visitor visa is "issued to citizens from non-exempted countries for up to 4 months."

How long does a Visitors Permit actually let you stay?

The Ministry of Immigration states the period issued "may vary from several days up to a maximum of four months." That is the ceiling, not a guarantee — the officer at the desk decides the length, and a thin-looking itinerary can attract a shorter stamp.

Extensions are possible but tightly bounded: a further two months only, applied for before the current permit expires, with "no further extension after this." Business visitors cannot extend at all.

For a wedding party this is generous. Even a couple arriving three weeks early to sit out the notice period and staying on for a honeymoon is nowhere near the limit.

What the Ministry asks you to have

  • A passport valid for at least six months
  • A confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Proof of funds sufficient to sustain you during the stay
  • Confirmation of accommodation — a hotel booking, or a letter of support if staying privately

Carry the resort confirmation for the wedding stay in your hand luggage. It answers two of those four questions in one document.

What does the Visitors Permit not allow?

It does not permit work. The Ministry is explicit that a Visitors Permit "cannot be used to look for employment" or to "work (or hold any form of employment)."

That matters less for the couple than for the people they bring. If you are flying in a photographer, videographer, celebrant, hair and makeup artist, musician or planner and paying them for the job, they are working in Fiji. A Visitors Permit is not the right basis for that, and the fact that the client is a foreigner and the money changes hands offshore does not change where the work happened.

There are two honest ways through this:

  1. Book Fiji-based suppliers, who are already entitled to work there. The country has a real supply base — see Fiji wedding suppliers for who does what and where.
  2. Take advice before you fly someone in. Immigration requirements for short-term paid work are a matter for the Ministry, not for a resort coordinator or a blog.

Note the parallel rule on the marriage itself: only a Fijian celebrant may solemnise the marriage and sign the certificate. An overseas celebrant can take part in the vows and blessing by arrangement, but cannot be the officiant of record.

What paperwork does the licence require from a visitor?

The marriage licence and the immigration permit are separate processes, and the documents for the licence are where visiting couples come unstuck.

Sources disagree on the witness age. Fiji's Embassy in Washington DC and the industry guide Bula Bride both state witnesses must be 21 and over; Fiji Pocket Guide states 18 and over. We have not found a version of the Marriage Act text online that settles it. Plan on 21 — it costs nothing to bring older witnesses, and most resorts can supply them.

Does the 21-day notice apply to visitors?

The standard route is a Notice of Intention to Marry, which the registry posts publicly "for 21 consecutive days." If nobody objects, the licence issues and the couple may marry.

Twenty-one days is longer than most destination weddings. The answer is the Special Licence to Marry, which the Ministry of Justice offers for circumstances including "foreign visitors who are in the country for a short period," and which requires a written explanation of why the notice period should be waived, with supporting evidence — venue booking receipts, tickets, and similar.

Once issued, the licence is valid for 28 days and the marriage must be officiated inside that window.

Registries sit in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa, with district registries at Nadi, Sigatoka, Navua, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Korovou, Nausori, Levuka, Nabouwalu, Savusavu and Taveuni. Most open around 8:30am and close by 3:00pm on weekdays. Build a registry visit into a weekday, not the day before a Saturday ceremony — and read the Fiji wedding planning timeline for where it sits in the sequence.

The two sets differ by exactly 9%, which is the shape of a VAT-inclusive figure published at a rate Fiji has since changed. Neither page is dated. Treat both as indicative, budget the higher one, and confirm on the day. At the mid-market rate on 9 September 2026, FJ$50 is about NZ$39, A$31 or US$23 — a rounding error against the rest of the wedding budget.

What if one of you is a Fijian citizen or resident?

The immigration question falls away for that person, but the documentary requirements do not: Fiji citizens still supply birth certificates, photo ID and evidence of any previous marriage ending. The Ministry of Justice notes that mixed-nationality couples attract additional requirements, including certificates of single status or statutory declarations.

The Special Licence route is framed by the Ministry around couples with special circumstances generally, not visitors alone, so a mixed couple can use it too.

Will the marriage be recognised back home?

Generally yes — a marriage validly performed under Fijian law is normally recognised elsewhere, and the Fijian marriage certificate is the evidence of it. But recognition is a question of your country's law, not Fiji's, and some countries want the certificate registered, apostilled or translated before it has full effect for name changes, immigration or pensions.

Ask your own registrar or department of internal affairs what they want to see, before you leave. It is a five-minute question at home and a very slow one from an island.

Guideline only. Immigration and marriage requirements change, and only the issuing authority can confirm your case — confirm with the Fiji Ministry of Immigration and the Fiji Ministry of Justice (Registrar-General) before you book flights.

The short version

  • There is no marriage visa. You marry on a Visitors Permit or a visitor visa.
  • The permit runs up to four months, extendable once by two.
  • The permit does not allow paid work — that constrains flying in suppliers, not getting married.
  • The 21-day notice is the default; the Special Licence is the visitor's route around it.
  • The licence, once issued, lasts 28 days.

Start with the documents that take longest — the single status certificate and any divorce papers — then book the venue. If you are choosing between islands and settings, Fiji wedding resorts A–Z and the Nadi city guide are the fastest way in; if a local coordinator is what you actually need, Fiji Weddings, Silvestre Weddings and Rosie Holidays all handle the registry run as part of the job. Couples marrying on Taveuni or in Savusavu will find Daku Resort includes the licence and registry transfers in its package.
