The best day trips from Nadi and Denarau divide cleanly into three: a boat west into the Mamanucas, a short drive north into the Sabeto valley, or a longer run east down the Queens Road to the Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour. Below is every one worth the day, with each operator's own published departure time and price — and a plain note where the operator publishes nothing.
How far can you realistically go in a day?
Port Denarau is published by Tourism Fiji as "a short 20-minute drive from Nadi Airport", which makes it the practical departure point for everything on the water. Overland, the published driving times along the Queens Road matter more than most people expect.
| From Nadi town | Distance | Published drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Sigatoka | 55 km | 55 minutes |
| Pacific Harbour | 140 km | 2 hours 20 minutes |
| Suva | 186 km | 3 hours 10 minutes |
Those figures come from a guidebook, not from the Fiji Roads Authority, which publishes none we could find. Tourism Fiji separately describes Pacific Harbour as "just two and half hour's drive from Nadi", which is consistent.
Here is the honest complication. Operator transfer times are much longer than drive times. Sigatoka River Safari publishes that "transfers from Coral Coast resorts are shorter, while Denarau/Nadi transfers can add 1.5 to 2 hours each way" — roughly double the pure drive, because a coach collects from multiple hotels. When you plan the day, budget the operator's transfer allowance, not the map's.
Which island day trips leave from Port Denarau?
Everything here departs Port Denarau and returns the same afternoon. Prices are as each operator publishes them, in the currency they publish.

A few things worth knowing before you book.
Cloud 9 is a two-level floating platform with a bar and a wood-fired pizzeria, moored out IN the Mamanucas. Its own website does not publish prices, times or an age policy — the figures above are from its own booking platform. The 1pm departure carries a note that it "operates if we have more than 25 guests", so confirm it is running. Exclusive hire is published from FJD 10,000 for a maximum of 100 guests over four hours, with boat transfers charged separately at FJD 169 per person for 1–14 guests or FJD 150 for 15–100.
Malamala Beach Club is on an island roughly 30 minutes out, and the crossing is exactly that. Children pay the adult rate; infants under three are complimentary. One zone, "The Venue", is published as adults-only at 16 and over — the island itself is not. Day beds and cabanas are extra, published from FJ$99 for a poolside day bed to FJ$549 for a Grand Deluxe Cabana. There is also a Returnee Pass at FJ$109 within seven days of a first visit, which is the cheapest second day on the water in Fiji.
South Sea Island is the family option: BBQ buffet lunch, local beer, house wine and soft drinks included, a kids club, a semi-submarine, snorkelling gear, paddleboards, kayaks and a saltwater pool. The crossing is 45 minutes.
Captain Cook Cruises publishes its day sail in Australian dollars, not FJD, so budget accordingly. Note a naming wrinkle: the island long marketed as Tivua is described on the operator's current page as Kadavu Lailai. Third-party sellers still say Tivua. Confirm which island you are being sold. Capacity is published as 100 passengers per vessel and 200 on the island, with a kids club for children aged 5 to 9.

What about Modriki, the Cast Away island?
The island is Monuriki — "Modriki" is the common tourism spelling. No major Denarau operator currently publishes a day trip that lands there. The one that does is Cruisin' Fiji, which publishes an eight-hour cruise from Port Denarau taking in the Mana sand bar, Monu Cove and a landing on Monuriki, with lunch and snorkelling, priced at $139 in US dollars, not FJD. No child rate and no exact return time are published.
Two caveats we would pass on to a friend: Monuriki is customarily accessed with the permission of Yanuya village, and several Mamanuca resorts run their own excursions there for in-house guests only. If you are staying out on an island, ask your resort first.
What is worth doing within an hour of Nadi?
The Sabeto valley, north of Nadi, is the best half day in the country for the money.
| Attraction | Hours | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden of the Sleeping Giant | Daily 9am–5pm, no booking required | FJD 35 | FJD 15 (6–15); under 6 free; family 2A+2C FJD 85 |
| Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool | Daily 8am–6pm | FJD 25 online / FJD 30 walk-in | FJD 15 (12 and under); 5 and under free |
Both sit on Wailoko Road. The Garden publishes itself as roughly 25 minutes from Denarau and about 10 minutes north of Nadi, is a 20-hectare orchid property with jungle walkways, and includes a tropical juice before you leave. It also publishes photoshoot permits — FJD 200 for 2–4 guests rising to FJD 500 for corporate — which is genuinely useful if you are shooting an incentive group.
The mud pools need one caution. At least three websites claim to be the official Sabeto or Tifajek pools, and there are several neighbouring village-run pools on the same road. Check which one your driver is taking you to. The operator we have cited publishes resort transfers at FJD 55 per adult and FJD 35 per child.
Which adventure trips are worth the drive?

The detail that decides it: Zip Fiji publishes a minimum age of 3, a maximum weight of 135 kg, tours of about three hours, and a limit of 16 guests with 5 guides per departure, with hotel transport included. That is the most completely published activity in Fiji and it makes planning easy. Note though that its Pacific Harbour shuttle covers the Pacific Harbour and Suva region, not Nadi — from Denarau, take the Nadi course.
Rivers Fiji publishes no prices, times or age limits on its own site; everything above comes from OARS, its affiliated operator, in US dollars. The minimum age is 8, rafts carry 4 to 8 guests, and the water is Class II–III. A 6:45am start at Pacific Harbour means leaving Denarau around 4am. It is a long day and, by most accounts, the best single thing you can do in Viti Levu's interior.
Ecotrax publishes a rider height minimum of 135 cm and a weight limit of 120 kg on its booking page, while its FAQ describes the tour as suiting ages 1 to 100 with rear bench seating and child seat attachments. The site does not reconcile those two statements — confirm with the operator if you are travelling with small children. It also asks for two paying guests minimum and recommends booking two months ahead.
Sigatoka River Safari publishes its rates only as images, so we are not reproducing a number. What is published: about 4.5 hours on the water, children 3 and under free, life jackets for adults, children and infants, a village visit, kava ceremony and lunch, and a direct share of booking proceeds to 18 remote communities along the river.
So which day should you pick?
One day, first-timer, travelling with children: South Sea Island. Lunch and drinks are included, the kids club is complimentary, and you are back at Denarau by quarter to five.
One day, no children, want the photograph: Cloud 9 or Malamala. Malamala is cheaper and closer; Cloud 9 is further out and more of an occasion.
Half a day and a hire car: the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and the Sabeto mud pools, in that order, for under FJD 60 a head.
One long day, want the interior rather than the reef: the Upper Navua with Rivers Fiji, accepting the 4am departure from Denarau.
Conference group with a free afternoon: Zip Fiji's Nadi course. Fixed 9am and 2pm departures, 16 guests per slot, transfers included, three hours door to door.
