One day on Denarau works best as a choice, not a checklist: either an island day trip or a land day, because the boats leave between 9:00am and 9:30am and come back in the late afternoon. Trying to do both is how people end up seeing a marina car park. Here is a plan built around the departure times that actually exist.
Should you go to an island or stay on Denarau?
This is the whole decision, and the boat timetable makes it for you.
The two most popular day trips both leave in the morning and return mid-to-late afternoon. Cloud 9, the floating bar and pizzeria out in the Mamanucas, runs a 9:00am departure from Port Denarau with check-in from 8:00am to 8:45am, returning from the platform at 2:00pm, with a boat transfer of about an hour each way. Malamala Beach Club departs Port Denarau at 9:30am for guests staying on Denarau, Wailoaloa or in Nadi, returning at 4:45pm or 6:00pm, on a transfer of around 30 minutes.
Take either one and your day is spoken for. That is not a criticism — it is the best use of a single day on Denarau, and the land options below are genuinely better as a half day.
| Option | Departs Port Denarau | Returns | Published price (FJD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud 9, morning trip | 9:00am (check-in 8:00–8:45am) | 2:00pm | From $198 adult and child 10+, plus a 2.8% card surcharge and a $4.01 per-person booking fee |
| Cloud 9, afternoon trip | 1:00pm (check-in 12:00–12:45pm) | 6:00pm | From $249.99 adult, $224.99 child 10–15, including a $60 food and beverage tab |
| Malamala Beach Club, full day | 9:30am | 4:45pm or 6:00pm | $215 full-day pass |
| Malamala Beach Club, half day | 12:00pm | 4:45pm or 6:00pm | $185 half-day pass |
Two things worth knowing before you book. Cloud 9 sets a minimum age of 10, and its afternoon trip needs a minimum of 25 guests or it may be folded into the morning session. Malamala is not an adults-only venue, but its adults-only area, The Venue, is open to day visitors aged 18 and over at no extra cost unless it has been booked for a private event.
At FJ$1.00 = NZ$0.78 / A$0.64 (rate taken 24 October 2026), a $215 Malamala full-day pass is roughly NZ$169 or A$137.
What does a realistic land day on Denarau look like?
If you are staying put, the day has three natural blocks, and the heat decides the order. Do the active thing early, eat in the middle, and keep the marina for the evening.
7:00–8:30am — the beach and the light. In late October, sunrise at Nadi is around 5:33am to 5:37am, so by seven the light is good and the heat is not yet a factor. This is the best hour of the day and almost nobody uses it.
8:30am–12:00pm — pick one activity. Golf at Denarau Golf & Racquet Club — the course shared by the Denarau resorts, including The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa and Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort — is 18 holes, par 72, playing to 7,150 yards; the club does not publish green fees and asks that you book in advance, so call ahead on +679 675 9710. The alternative with children is Big Bula Waterpark on Jayant Road, open 10:00am to 5:00pm daily. Its published prices are $89 for an adult day pass, $60 for a child under five, $330 for a family package of four, and $15 for entry only; lockers and towels are $8 each plus a $10 refundable deposit. Note the park closes Monday to Thursday during February for maintenance.
Water sports are the third option, and Denarau has several operators including Hydro Sports Fiji, KaiWai Watersports and Adrenalin Fiji. None publishes a rate card, so budget on the basis of a quote rather than a guess.
12:00–3:00pm — lunch and shade. The Port Denarau retail and dining area is open from 9:00am to 11:00pm every day, including public holidays, which makes it the reliable fallback when a plan collapses. Lulu's Bar, Restaurant & Café and Cardo's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar are both at the Port; Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant is the one to choose if you want Fijian cooking rather than an international menu.
3:00pm–sunset — the marina, then the light again. Sunset at Nadi in late October falls between about 6:13pm and 6:17pm, with dusk around 6:36pm. Work backwards from that: a drink at the Port by five, on the water or the beach by six.
How do you get around Denarau without a car?
The Bula Bus is a hop-on, hop-off service linking the Denarau resorts and the Port, and it is the standard answer. Reported hours are daily from 7:00am to about 10:30pm with a full-day adult fare a little over FJ$10 and children under 12 free with a paying adult — but we could not find an operator page publishing the current fare or frequency, so confirm both at your hotel desk. Taxis on the island are plentiful and short-hop.
From Nadi International Airport, allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes to Denarau. The marina's own site says 20 minutes; transfer operators quote around 25 for the 14-odd kilometres, and it runs longer during the daytime congestion around Nadi town.
What if the weather turns?
Denarau's fallback is unusually good, which is why it suits a one-day visit. The Port is covered, open late and walkable; the resort pools and spas run regardless; and the boat operators will generally move or refund a cancelled sailing rather than run it in bad conditions. The thing to avoid is booking a 9:00am island departure on the one morning you cannot be flexible.
The verdict
Choose the island day if this is your only day and you want the version of Fiji on the postcard — Malamala if you want a beach club and a shorter transfer, Cloud 9 if you want the novelty and you are travelling without under-10s.
Choose the land day if you have children under 10, you want golf, or you would rather not spend two hours of a single day on a boat.
Either way, book the boat the day before, not the morning of. Denarau sits inside our wider list of the 40 best things to do in Fiji, and everything listed here is mapped on the Denarau city page. Departure times and prices are as published by each operator and were checked on 24 October 2026; Malamala's published passes are stated as valid for travel until 31 March 2027. Sunrise and sunset times are for Nadi in late October. Confirm times, prices and age limits with the operator at the time of booking.
