Denarau Island is a 2.55 km² resort precinct joined to the mainland by a short causeway, about 10 km west of Nadi International Airport and 5 km north-west of Nadi town. It holds most of Fiji's international-brand resorts, an 18-hole golf course, a marina that is the departure point for the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, and a shopping and restaurant precinct at Port Denarau. It is the easiest arrival in Fiji and the least Fijian-feeling place in it. Both of those are the point.
How long does it take to get to Denarau from Nadi Airport?
Published figures disagree slightly, and the honest answer is that it depends on traffic through Nadi town rather than distance.
| Source | Stated time |
|---|---|
| Fiji Pocket Guide driving times (7 km) | 15 minutes |
| Port Denarau Marina | 20 minutes |
| Fiji Pocket Guide Denarau transport guide | 20–30 minutes |
Plan on 20 to 30 minutes for a group arriving at a peak time, and 15 for a car at a quiet one. It is the shortest airport-to-resort transfer of any major Fiji precinct — the Coral Coast is roughly an hour, Pacific Harbour about 2 hours 20, and Suva about 3 hours 10.
What does the transfer cost?
| Option | Indicative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Metered taxi (LT plates) | FJ$15–18 | Airport flagfall FJ$5, then FJ$0.15 per 100 m |
| Hire car taxi (LH plates) | FJ$18–40 | Fixed rate, usually booked through a hotel |
| Public Westbus | under FJ$5 | Nadi to Denarau; e-Transport card only, no cash |
| Bula Bus (on Denarau) | just over FJ$10 | Full-day pass; under-12s free with a paying adult |
| Private and group transfer | on application | Coach and van operators listed below |
Taxi figures were published by Fiji Pocket Guide as current at July 2025 — treat them as a guide and confirm at the rank. The Bula Bus runs a hop-on-hop-off loop around Denarau from about 7am to 10.30pm, which is how most guests move between resorts and Port Denarau without a taxi.
For groups, the directory lists Tourist Transport Fiji, whose fleet spans coaches, minibuses, 17 and 30-seaters and wheelchair-accessible vehicles from a base at Nadi International Airport; TEWAKA Fiji, which runs 53-seat deluxe coaches and charters for groups of 15 or more; and Airport Shuttle Fiji, TTF's 24-hour transfer brand covering Nadi, Denarau, Port Denarau Marina, the Coral Coast, Natadola and Lautoka.
Which resorts are on Denarau Island?
The precinct is essentially a row of large international-brand properties along one beach. Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson, Westin, Sofitel and Wyndham all operate here. In the MICE Fiji directory that includes The Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa, Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, Radisson Blu Resort Fiji Denarau Island and Club Wyndham Denarau Island.
What that concentration buys a planner is genuine multi-property capability: several hundred rooms within a few minutes of each other, sharing one transport loop, one marina and one restaurant precinct. Very few destinations in the Pacific can put 800 delegates within walking and shuttling distance of a single plenary. Multi-property conferences: running one event across four hotels is the practical guide to doing it.
We do not publish room counts, meeting-room capacities or star ratings for these properties unless the property itself publishes them. Where the resort has published its own function-space numbers, they appear on the capacity charts.
What is Port Denarau, and why does it matter?
Port Denarau Marina is the single most useful piece of infrastructure on the island. It holds 57 fully serviced berths for visiting yachts, ranging up to a single 85-metre berth, plus 16 moorings in the basin, with a channel depth of 5 metres at zero tide. It has full power, water and fuelling, 24-hour security card access to bathrooms and laundry, a 50-tonne travelift and a hardstand.
For events, what matters is what leaves from it. Every scheduled boat to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands departs here, along with day cruises, private charters and water taxis. Directory operators working out of Port Denarau include Yasawa Adventures Fiji, which runs the Yasawa Flyer daily through both island chains; SeaFiji; Mamanuca Express, with eight vessels operating around the clock; Coral Cats Sailing, whose 13-metre catamaran carries up to 25; and Manu Charters, a private yacht taking up to nine guests.
The adjoining complex holds a supermarket, bottle store, bank, money exchange, doctor's clinic and pharmacy — which is more relevant to a 300-delegate conference than it sounds.
Where do you eat on Denarau?
The Port Denarau precinct is the main cluster, and it is walkable. Listed restaurants and bars include Cardo's Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar, Bonefish Seafood Restaurant, Indigo Indian Asian Restaurant and Bar, Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant, Mamacita Mexican Restaurant and Bar, Cantina Grill and Bar, Grills Restaurant and Bar and Lulu's Bar, Restaurant and Cafe.
For a conference, the practical value of that list is that a free evening does not require a coach movement. Delegates walk or take the Bula Bus. For private dining capacities, contact each venue directly — published group numbers vary and we do not estimate them.
What is there to do on Denarau?
- Golf. The 18-hole Denarau golf course is the precinct's original centrepiece, alongside tennis courts.
- The water. Adrenalin Fiji, KaiWai Watersports Fiji, Hydro Sports Fiji and Big Blue Fiji all operate here.
- Day cruises. Captain Cook Cruises Fiji and Cruisin Fiji run from the marina.
- A day island. Malamala Beach Club is a day-use island a short vessel ride offshore, with scheduled departures from Port Denarau at 9.30am, 10.00am and 12.00pm returning at 4.45pm and 6.00pm.
What Denarau does not have is a village, a market, or much sense of the country outside the resort fence. That is a real limitation for an incentive programme built around cultural depth, and the reason most good Denarau-based itineraries include at least one day off the island. Fiji's best day trips from Nadi and Denarau and day trip islands from Denarau cover the options.
How did Denarau come to exist?
It was built, not found. The development was started in 1969 by the American developer Dennis McElrath, and the first hotel — the Regent of Fiji, now the Westin — opened in 1975. Between 1988 and 1991 the project cleared 850 acres of mangrove forest during expansion. The Japanese developer EIE International later invested in a $200 million programme before going bankrupt in 1995, after which the island was acquired by a consortium including New Zealand's Tabua Investments, ITT Sheraton and Air Pacific.
That history explains the place: a planned resort estate on reclaimed mangrove land, with a golf course at its centre and residential lots around the edges.
Who should choose Denarau — and who should not?
Choose Denarau if your group is large, your arrival window is tight, delegates are travelling with families, or you need multiple properties within one transport loop. It is also the correct base if half your programme happens on the water, because everything sails from the marina.
Look elsewhere if the brief is cultural immersion, a private-island buyout, or a small high-end incentive where anonymity and setting matter more than logistics. The Coral Coast, the Mamanucas and the outer islands all do those better.
A reasonable compromise is two or three nights on Denarau for the conference, then a move out for the incentive or the reward days. The transfer economics work because you are already at the marina.
