Almost everyone arrives at Nadi, and everything else in Fiji is measured from there. Denarau is about fifteen minutes by road. The Coral Coast is around an hour. Suva is roughly three. The Mamanucas are half an hour by boat, and the far Yasawas are close to five hours each way. Those numbers decide more Fiji itineraries than any brochure does.
This is the hub for Fiji's islands and regions: what each one is genuinely good at, and what it actually costs you in travel time.
How many islands does Fiji have?
Around 330 islands, of which roughly 110 are inhabited, spread over about 18,300 square kilometres of land. Sources differ slightly — Tourism Fiji says 333 islands and 18,274 km², the Fiji Government's own land-management material says 330-plus and 18,300 km² — which is a small enough gap to note and move on from.
Two islands dominate. Viti Levu, at 10,388 km², carries over 70 per cent of the population and every international arrival. Vanua Levu, at 5,538 km², is roughly half its size and a different country in feel. Taveuni is the third largest.
The rest sit in groups: the Mamanucas (about 20 islands), the Yasawas (20-plus), Lomaiviti (seven sizeable volcanic islands), the Kadavu group, and Lau (60-plus), which is Fiji at its most remote.
Fiji straddles 180 degrees of longitude. On Taveuni there is a signposted marker for the geographic 180th meridian near Waiyevo village. The observed International Date Line is routed east of the country so Fiji keeps a single date — the marker is geography, not a time zone boundary.
Where does everyone actually arrive?
Nadi International Airport handles 97 per cent of Fiji's international passengers, on Fiji Airports' own figure, with 38 international scheduled flights daily serving 20 airlines and 15 international cities.
Nausori, serving Suva, is international in name only. Fiji Airports describes it as the main domestic and secondary international airport, and its sole scheduled international route is Nauru Airlines to Nauru, added in August 2025. For every other destination, passengers transit Nadi.
The planning consequence is blunt: a Suva-based programme still lands its delegates at Nadi and moves them roughly three hours by road. Budget for it, or fly the Nadi–Suva domestic leg.
How long does it take to get anywhere?
By road on Viti Levu
All times assume the Queens Road, daylight, dry conditions and no stops. Fiji's maximum speed limit is 80 km/h and a coach carrying 120 delegates will not match a private car.
| From Nadi to | Distance | Approx. drive |
|---|---|---|
| Denarau | 7 km | ~15 min |
| Lautoka | 33 km | ~35 min |
| Sigatoka | 55 km | ~55 min |
| Korotogo / Coral Coast | — | ~1 hr – 1 hr 15 |
| Pacific Harbour | 140 km | ~2 hr 20 |
| Suva | 186 km | ~3 hr 10 |
One source discrepancy worth flagging: Pacific Harbour is given as roughly 2.5 hours by Tourism Fiji and as a 3-hour drive by Beqa Lagoon Resort. Publish it as 2.5 to 3 hours and plan for the longer figure with a group.
Fiji's two trunk roads are the Queens Road along the south coast and the Kings Road along the north, together forming the Viti Levu circuit. Of roughly 7,500 km of road nationally, only about 1,700 km is sealed — inland routes are gravel or dirt and want a 4WD.
By sea from Port Denarau
Port Denarau is Fiji's transfer hub, about twenty minutes by taxi from the airport, and it is where every Mamanuca and Yasawa journey starts.
South Sea Cruises runs multiple fast ferries daily into the Mamanucas — South Sea Island, Malamala Beach Club, Castaway, Beachcomber, Mana and Malolo. The operator does not publish per-destination durations on its own pages, so treat any figure you see with care. What is confirmed: Malamala Island is 30 minutes from Port Denarau.
The Yasawa Flyer is the artery north. The current vessel is a 320-seat high-speed catamaran launched in August 2025, air-conditioned, with a bar and food service. It departs Port Denarau daily at 08:45, runs the chain, and returns to Port Denarau at approximately 18:00.
| Yasawa Flyer stop | Approx. from Port Denarau |
|---|---|
| South Sea Island | 30 min |
| Waya Island Resort | 2 hr 5 min |
| Naviti (Vuata Bay) | 3 hr 5 min |
| Blue Lagoon Beach Resort (Nacula) | 4 hr 30 min |
| Far end of the route | ~5 hr |
Two things planners consistently miss. First, resorts are reached by tender boat meeting the catamaran offshore, not by a dock — which matters enormously for anyone with mobility needs, and for heavy luggage or equipment. Second, the service can be suspended for weather; the operator's own timetable page has carried suspension advisories.
A correction while we are here: "Awesome Adventures Fiji" is now "Yasawa Adventures Fiji", a South Sea Cruises Group brand. The two names refer to the same operation.
By air within Fiji
Fiji Link flies Nadi to Suva, Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni, Kadavu and Rotuma, with wider network points including Cicia, Koro, Lakeba and Vanua Balavu. The fleet is ATR 72-600 (68 seats), ATR 42-600 (48 seats) and DHC-6-400 Twin Otter (19 seats).
Important and widely mis-reported: Fiji Link has terminated its services to Malolo Lailai, Mana Island, Laucala and Yasawa Island. Several travel guides and reference sites still list those airstrips as served. We could not confirm who, if anyone, currently operates scheduled fixed-wing service into the Mamanuca airstrips — check directly before you build an itinerary around one.
Turtle Airways operates seaplanes from Wailoaloa Beach, about fifteen minutes from Nadi Airport, with two to six flights a day. The Yasawas are around 30 minutes each way; the Mamanucas 12 to 15 minutes. It serves Navutu Stars, Blue Lagoon, Mantaray, Paradise Cove, Mana, Castaway, Likuliku, Musket Cove and Plantation among others.
Island Hoppers Fiji flies helicopters and fixed-wing from Nadi Airport and a Denarau helipad, 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset, built around international arrival and departure times rather than a fixed schedule. Helicopters carry a maximum of six passengers with a two-seat minimum. Mamanucas are 10 to 15 minutes; the Coral Coast 20 to 25. Baggage is 15 kg per person by helicopter and 23 kg by fixed-wing, with excess charged at FJ$12 per kilo or sent on a later flight.
Do not book Pacific Island Air. The company published a closure letter dated 2 December 2024 announcing it would cease operations effective 31 January 2025. Travel guides and at least one major reference site still list it as active.
Which region for which purpose?
| Region | Best for | Access from Nadi |
|---|---|---|
| Denarau Island | Conferences, large room blocks, walkable dining | ~15 min road |
| Nadi | Airport-adjacent stays, value, arrival/departure nights | 5–20 min road |
| Lautoka & Vuda | Local character, marina, lower cost | ~35 min road |
| Coral Coast | Mid-size conferences, families, culture, golf | ~1–1.25 hr road |
| Pacific Harbour | Adventure programmes, diving, smaller retreats | 2.5–3 hr road |
| Suva | Government, association and academic events | ~3 hr road, or domestic flight |
| Mamanuca Islands | Incentives, day trips, surf, short island stays | 12–30 min by boat or 10–15 min by air |
| Yasawa Islands | Slow, scenic, small groups; manta season | 2–5 hr by catamaran, ~30 min seaplane |
| Taveuni & Vanua Levu | Diving, nature, leadership retreats | 1–1.5 hr domestic flight |
| Kadavu, Beqa, Lau | Specialist and remote | Flight or charter |
Denarau Island and Nadi
Denarau is a small island off Viti Levu's west coast, about fifteen to twenty minutes from Nadi International Airport, and it is Fiji's conference core — the highest concentration of large resorts, the largest function spaces, a golf and tennis club, and the marina that feeds the islands. If your event needs a room block in one precinct, it starts here. Note the preposition Fijians use: things are on Denarau Island, not in it.
Nadi itself is where value lives, and where you put arrival and departure nights when flights land late or leave early.
The Coral Coast
Viti Levu's southern coast, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter from the airport. It carries the best beaches on the main island, the anchor cultural and family attractions — Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatoka River Safari, Kula WILD, Ecotrax, Natadola Beach and the Natadola Bay championship course — and several substantial conference resorts including Shangri-La Yanuca Island. Again, the preposition is on the Coral Coast.
Pacific Harbour
Branded the Adventure Capital, and it earns it: Beqa Lagoon shark diving, jungle river rafting, canopy tours and golf. Two and a half to three hours from Nadi, which puts it out of reach for a two-night programme and comfortably in reach for four. The Pearl Resort and Nanuku Resort anchor it.
Suva
The capital and largest city, on the south-eastern coast — museums, markets, the only genuinely urban dining scene in the country, and the venues that host government, association and university business. Rain more often than the west. Roughly three hours by road, or a short Fiji Link hop.
The Mamanucas
About twenty islands, with the most frequent and most reliable connections from Nadi of any island group. This is where Fiji does incentive travel: Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Musket Cove, Tokoriki, Malolo, Mana, Matamanoa, Six Senses Fiji and Vomo. It is also Fiji's surf country — Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Namotu Lefts, Wilkes Passage.
The Yasawas
High grassy peaks, exceptional water, manta rays roughly May to October, the Sawa-i-Lau caves and the Blue Lagoon. Beautiful, and slow. This is the region planners most often underestimate. A resort at the far end of the chain is close to five hours each way by catamaran, with a tender-boat landing at both ends. It can absolutely be the right answer — for a small leadership group, a honeymoon, an incentive that wants genuine remoteness — but it needs a rest day designed around the transfer, not squeezed past it. Or fly: Turtle Airways does it in around thirty minutes. Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, Yasawa Island Resort, Paradise Cove, Navutu Stars and Turtle Island are here.
Taveuni and Vanua Levu
Taveuni is the Garden Island — Bouma National Heritage Park, the Tavoro waterfalls, the Lavena Coastal Walk, Lake Tagimoucia in its crater at 823 metres, and the Rainbow Reef and Great White Wall diving in the Somosomo Strait. Reached by a one to one and a half hour flight from Nadi to Matei. Matangi Private Island Resort, Taveuni Palms, The Remote Resort and Paradise Taveuni sit around it.
Vanua Levu, with Savusavu and Labasa, is quieter still — volcanic hot springs, eco-resorts, rainforest and a working craft community. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, Namale and Koro Sun are the known names. Fiji Airways' own site blocked automated retrieval, so we are not publishing a flight duration for Savusavu.
Kadavu, Beqa and Lau
Kadavu is Fiji's fourth largest island, in the far south, with almost no roads, the Great Astrolabe Reef, rare birdlife and uncrowded surf. Beqa is firewalking country and the base of the shark dive, reached by road to Pacific Harbour and then a resort boat. Lau is Fiji at its most remote — 60-plus islands, the Bay of Islands at Vanua Balavu, Fulaga Lagoon, and private yacht charter as the realistic access method for most visitors.
What is the practical rule?
For a business event, work backwards from the transfer, not forwards from the brochure.
- One or two nights: stay on Denarau or in Nadi. Anything else eats the programme.
- Three to four nights: the Coral Coast opens up, and so do the Mamanucas.
- Five nights or more: Pacific Harbour, the Yasawas, Taveuni and Vanua Levu all become sensible.
- Any island stay for a large group: cost the transfer as a day, with weather contingency. Tender-boat boarding is not a footnote.
Browse the directory by region: Denarau, Nadi, Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour, Suva, Lautoka, Mamanuca Islands, Yasawa Islands, Taveuni & Vanua Levu and Other Islands. Transfer operators are listed under transport and transfers — including Mamanuca Express, SeaFiji, TEWAKA Fiji and Coastline Fiji.
