Where you stay in Fiji is really a decision about transfer time. Denarau is fifteen minutes from the airport and has the deepest concentration of rooms and function space. The Coral Coast is about an hour and buys you better beaches. The islands are beautiful and cost you half a day each way. Everything else is detail.
This is the hub for accommodation in Fiji - what each precinct is genuinely for, who it suits, and what the published data does and does not tell you.
Which precinct should you choose?
| Precinct | Best for | From Nadi Airport | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denarau Island | Conferences, large groups, first-timers | ~15 min | Resort-bubble; not "real" Fiji |
| Nadi and Wailoaloa | Arrival/departure nights, value | 5-20 min | Beaches are ordinary |
| Momi Bay and Sonaisali | Quieter resort stays near the airport | ~30-45 min | Fewer off-property options |
| Lautoka and Vuda | Local character, marina, budget | ~35 min | Limited resort inventory |
| Coral Coast | Families, culture, mid-size events | ~1-1.25 hr | Needs 3+ nights to justify |
| Pacific Harbour | Adventure, diving, retreats | 2.5-3 hr | Long transfer |
| Suva | Business, government, association events | ~3 hr | Wetter; not a beach destination |
| Mamanuca Islands | Incentives, honeymoons, short island stays | 12-30 min boat | Weather-dependent transfers |
| Yasawa Islands | Remoteness, small groups, manta season | 2-5 hr boat | Transfer is a day each way |
| Taveuni & Vanua Levu | Diving, nature, leadership retreats | 1-1.5 hr flight | Domestic flight and baggage limits |
Denarau Island: the default, and usually right
Denarau is a small island off Viti Levu's west coast connected by causeway, about fifteen to twenty minutes from Nadi International Airport. It carries the highest density of large resorts in Fiji, an 18-hole championship golf course and six floodlit tennis courts at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, and Port Denarau Marina with a supermarket, pharmacy, bank, money exchange, medical clinic and a full dining strip.
The resorts here: Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa, Radisson Blu Resort Fiji Denarau Island and Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa.
Choose Denarau if you need a large room block in a single precinct, you want delegates or guests to be able to walk to dinner, you have a short programme, or it is somebody's first trip to Fiji.
Choose elsewhere if you want a beach worth the flight. Denarau's beach is not why anyone comes. It is a working resort precinct and it is excellent at being one.
One honest gap: nobody publishes a total room count for Denarau Island. Not the marina, not Tourism Fiji, not the resorts collectively - and several of the largest properties do not publish their own room counts either. Any "Denarau has X rooms" figure you see is an estimate. If you need the number, you have to ask each property.
Nadi, Wailoaloa and the airport corridor
Where value lives, and where the arrival and departure nights go. Fiji Airways' long-haul services and several trans-Tasman flights arrive and depart at hours that make an airport-corridor night sensible rather than optional.
Tanoa International Hotel is 149 rooms, about 3.5 kilometres and eight minutes by car from the terminal, with free airport transfers - and it reopened in November 2025 after a $20 million refurbishment covering the lobby, reception, restaurant, pool and conference facilities. Notably, its main convention centre was still under construction at the time of that reporting, so its function capacity is likely to change again.
Also in the corridor: Tokatoka Resort Hotel, Tanoa Skylodge, Novotel Nadi, Mercure Nadi, Fiji Gateway Hotel and, on Wailoaloa Beach, Smugglers Cove Beach Resort and Ramada Suites Wailoaloa.
The significant recent addition is Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa at Wailoaloa, about fifteen minutes from the airport, which opened a new convention centre in November 2025 - the biggest single addition to Fiji's business-events capacity in years.
Momi Bay and Sonaisali
A quieter alternative within reasonable reach of the airport. Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay has overwater bures and a Grand Salon Ballroom seating 400 theatre-style. DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Fiji, Sonaisali Island publishes 120 rooms with three meeting rooms totalling 237 square metres.
Both suit a group that wants resort seclusion without an hour on the Queens Road. Neither has anything much within walking distance, which is the trade.
The Coral Coast
Viti Levu's southern shore, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter from the airport. Better beaches than Denarau, a genuine cluster of attractions, and several resorts with real conference capability. Remember the preposition: things are on the Coral Coast.
Shangri-La Yanuca Island sits on its own island connected by causeway and describes its Ratu Makutu events centre as Fiji's largest MICE facility - though it publishes no capacity figures at all on its own site to support the claim, which is worth knowing before you build a bid around it. The resort states the transfer from Nadi as about 50 minutes by scenic countryside road.
Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort publishes 208 rooms plus 47 bures and seven event venues, the largest seating 160 theatre-style. Warwick Fiji Resort & Spa has a 510-square-metre Talanoa Hall at 400 theatre plus a dedicated Coral Coast Conference Centre. InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa at Natadola has a pillarless ballroom at 600 theatre and the Vijay Singh-designed Natadola Bay championship course alongside. The Naviti Resort, Fiji Hideaway, Mango Bay, Yatule and Bedarra Beach Inn fill out the range.
Choose the Coral Coast if you have three nights or more, you have families or partners in the party, or your programme wants cultural and adventure content nearby.
Pacific Harbour
Two and a half to three hours from Nadi, which rules it out for short programmes and makes it excellent for longer ones. Beqa Lagoon shark diving, jungle rafting, canopy tours and golf are all here.
The Pearl Resort has a purpose-built conference centre seating 300. Nanuku Resort publishes 15 suites plus 22 villas and residences - 37 keys - with a Meke Room at 40 people, and states transfers as 30 minutes by private air or a 2.5-hour drive. Uprising Beach Resort and Yatu Lau Lagoon Resort are the mid-range options.
This is the precinct for a retreat of twenty to sixty rather than a conference of three hundred.
Suva
Fiji's capital and largest city, on the south-eastern coast, roughly three hours from Nadi by road or a short Fiji Link flight. It rains more here. It also has the country's only urban dining scene, its museums and markets, and the venues that host government, association and university business.
Grand Pacific Hotel publishes 113 rooms, six function venues totalling 2,361 square metres, and the Britannia Ballroom at 600 square metres seating 600 theatre or 400 banquet - the largest hotel ballroom in Suva on published figures. It is owned by the Fiji National Provident Fund and now distributed and operated under IHG. It is open and trading.
Novotel Suva Lami Bay publishes 108 rooms with a 480-square-metre convention centre at 350 theatre, 300 banquet. Holiday Inn Suva has six meeting venues on the waterfront. Tanoa Plaza has a purpose-built conference floor with a largest room at 150 theatre. Peninsula International, De Vos on the Park and Capricorn Apartment Hotel fill the mid-market.
Choose Suva if your delegates are Fijian or regional, if your event has a government or academic dimension, or if you actually want a city. Do not choose it for a beach conference.
The islands
Mamanucas
The most practical island group, with frequent boat and air connections. Likuliku Lagoon Resort is Fiji's best-known overwater-bure property; Musket Cove, Malolo, Plantation Island, Mana, Matamanoa, Tokoriki, Tropica, Lomani, Vomo and Six Senses Fiji cover everything from family to ultra-luxury.
This is where Fiji does incentive travel well: short transfers, real island character, and enough properties to buy one out.
Yasawas
Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, Yasawa Island Resort, Paradise Cove, Navutu Stars and Turtle Island. Manta rays roughly May to October, the Sawa-i-Lau caves, and the best water in the country.
The transfer is the whole story. The Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau at 08:45 and takes about 4 hours 30 minutes to Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, returning to Denarau around 18:00. Resorts are reached by tender boat meeting the catamaran offshore, not by a dock. Seaplane cuts it to around thirty minutes. Build a rest day around the transfer or fly.
Taveuni, Vanua Levu and the outer islands
Matangi Private Island Resort, Taveuni Palms, Qamea, The Remote Resort, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, Namale, Koro Sun and Tides Reach. Diving country, and the right answer for a leadership retreat of a dozen people who want to be genuinely away.
Further out: Kokomo Private Island, COMO Laucala Island, Royal Davui, Toberua and Beqa Lagoon Resort.
Note the domestic-flight constraint: Fiji Link's small-aircraft baggage allowances are tight, and helicopter transfers carry 15 kg per person. That is a real problem for anyone bringing exhibition material or AV kit to an island leg.
What does the published data actually show?
Less than you would hope, and it is worth being direct about it.
Most Fiji resorts do not publish their room count. Of the major conference properties, the ones that do are the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa (356), Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa (296 per Accor), Tanoa International (149), DoubleTree Sonaisali (120), Grand Pacific Hotel (113), Novotel Suva Lami Bay (108), Outrigger Fiji (208 rooms plus 47 bures) and Nanuku (37 keys). The Sheraton, the Westin, Radisson Blu, Momi Bay, Crowne Plaza, Warwick, InterContinental and Shangri-La Yanuca do not publish theirs on their own sites.
There is no national room-stock figure from Tourism Fiji or the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, and neither publishes a business-events capacity guide.
The authoritative national source is the Fiji Bureau of Statistics quarterly Hotels and Tourist Accommodation release. Its March quarter 2026 figures report rooms available up 0.2 per cent, rooms sold up 0.4 per cent, and room occupancy at 49.7 per cent, up 0.2 percentage points.
That occupancy figure is the most useful number in this article for anyone negotiating. National average occupancy under 50 per cent means the market has slack in it - unevenly distributed, certainly, and peak-season Denarau will not feel like it, but slack nonetheless.
The decision, in one paragraph
If your programme is two nights or fewer, stay on Denarau or in Nadi. If it is three to four, add the Coral Coast and the Mamanucas. If it is five or more, everywhere opens up. If you need more than about 250 rooms in a single precinct, Denarau is the only realistic answer in Fiji. And if the event is really about the water rather than the meeting, take the transfer seriously and go somewhere worth it.
Browse accommodation and venues, or start from a city: Denarau, Nadi, Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour, Suva, Lautoka, Mamanuca Islands, Yasawa Islands, Taveuni & Vanua Levu or Other Islands. Function-space searches start at the capacity index.
Next: group accommodation and room blocks in Fiji covers contracting, attrition and cut-offs; Fiji's islands and regions covers the transfers in full.
