Lautoka has three useful places to stay and they serve three different purposes. The waterfront, for business: Tanoa Waterfront Hotel, 92 rooms, the city's only full-service hotel and the only one publishing conference capacities. The city centre, for cheap and central. And Vuda Point, 15 minutes from Nadi airport, for a resort with a beach.

The honest framing first: almost nobody chooses Lautoka for a holiday. People stay here because they have business with the port, the sugar mill or the Western Division government, or because they want a resort near Nadi airport without paying Denarau prices. Both are good reasons. Lautoka just is not pretending to be the Coral Coast.

Two cautions, and they matter. The Cathay Hotel's only web presence is a single page on a third-party budget-accommodation domain that is not machine-readable, and the trade listing's meeting capacities contradict themselves — one figure exceeds the room's own stated maximum. Ring +679 666 0566 before you book a group in. Separately, one Bekana Island resort appears in listings and transfer schedules, but its website currently serves no content at all, so we are not listing it until we can verify it is trading. Nor could we confirm that a "Fiji Hideaway" property at Vuda is trading under that name; a long-established Fiji Hideaway Resort & Spa operates ON the Coral Coast, and the two are easy to confuse.

What are Lautoka's precincts, and which one do you want?

Marine Drive and the waterfront. The business precinct. Tanoa Waterfront sits here, with the markets, the shops and Lautoka Port "minutes away" by the hotel's own description, two outdoor pools, Fins Restaurant, the Sunset Bar, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour gym. If you are in Lautoka to work, this is the default. Fins Restaurant is also the best-known waterfront dining room in the city.

The city centre. Naviti Street, Vitogo Parade, Tavewa Avenue, Bekana Lane. Lautoka Hotel, Cathay and Sea Breeze are all here, within a few minutes of the bus stand, the taxis, Tappoo City retail and the council offices on Vitogo Parade. Lautoka Hotel is the one with the published price list — the full ladder from a FJ$35 dormitory bed to a FJ$225 deluxe room, which almost no Fijian hotel publishes. Note the site writes bare dollar signs without naming the currency, so confirm FJD before you commit a budget.

Vuda Point. Roughly midway between Nadi and Lautoka, and the precinct most visitors actually want. First Landing, Anchorage and Nila Beach all describe themselves as about 15 minutes north of Nadi International Airport; Tourism Fiji puts Vuda Point at about 20 minutes' drive from both the airport and Lautoka city. Vuda Marina itself, established 1996, has a restaurant, a café, a bar, a chandlery, a general store, an ATM, fuel, laundry and up to 40 cyclone pits — which tells you what sort of place it is. First Landing is the standout: 12 published unit types from garden bures to the eight-to-twelve-guest Nalamu Grand Villa with a 25-metre pool.

Saweni Beach. Quiet, low-density. The Fiji Orchid's six tented bures in five acres of gardens, 15 km north of Nadi airport, are the most upmarket beds in the Lautoka orbit, and the only ones with complimentary airport transfers.

Can you hold a conference in Lautoka?

Up to about 200 people, yes. Above that, you are going to Nadi or ON Denarau Island.

Tanoa Waterfront is also the only Lautoka property publishing per-delegate conference rates: $100 per person half day (morning or afternoon tea plus lunch) and $115 per person full day (morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea), inclusive of government taxes, with pads, pens, flipcharts, whiteboards, a sound system, wireless microphones, a lectern and a projector screen included and Zoom facilities at extra cost. The PDF writes bare dollar signs without naming the currency — confirm FJD. Venue hire may be charged on top, and the hire rate is not published.

Only theatre-style figures exist for Tanoa's rooms. Banquet, cocktail, classroom and U-shape capacities, and all room dimensions, are not published — ask for them in writing. On Churchill Park, note that a stadium database gives a maximum of 10,000 against the council's 11,736; the council's figure is the official one. The park has hosted Fijian Drua Super Rugby home games since 2023, which is worth knowing because it moves Lautoka's hotel occupancy on those weekends.

How do you get to Lautoka, and what does it cost?

Lautoka Hotel's own site puts Nadi International Airport at 24 km. Drive time has no single authoritative source: published figures run from about 30 minutes to about an hour, and one transfer operator's own page contradicts itself with both 30 and 45 minutes. Plan on 45 minutes and you will not be caught out.

Those figures are as published in Fijian dollars in October 2026. We do not publish NZD or AUD equivalents because the rate moves — convert at the rate on the day you contract. Coach charter around the western division is available from Classic Buses Ltd, which took over 35 buses and their routes from Pacific Transport, and Sugar Taxi & Tours has been working Lautoka since 1979, running 24 hours with GPS-equipped, air-conditioned vehicles.

Why stay in Lautoka rather than Nadi or Denarau?

Three real reasons, and one that is commonly claimed but wrong.

The business is here. Lautoka is Fiji's second-largest port and the main maritime gateway for western Viti Levu, handling bulk sugar, molasses, woodchips, petroleum and gas. The sugar mill, founded in 1903 and built by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company between 1899 and 1903, employs about 1,300 people and is the city's biggest employer — which is why Lautoka is "Sugar City". And since 2012 Lautoka has been the administrative capital of the Western Division. If your meetings are with government, shipping or sugar, staying in Nadi is an hour of your day, twice.

It is cheaper, and the price ladder is published. Lautoka Hotel's rates run from a dormitory bed to a deluxe room, openly. Very little Fijian accommodation does that.

Vuda Point is closer to Nadi airport than Denarau is to anything. Fifteen minutes to the terminal, a real beach, a marina, and nothing like Denarau's pricing.

The claim that is wrong: Lautoka is not the Yasawas gateway. Blue Lagoon Cruises departs from Port Denarau, and Tourism Fiji's own trade site states that all its cruises continue to depart ex Port Denarau — a point worth noting given that MV Fiji Princess was retired in April 2026 after running aground near Monuriki Island, with the 45-metre, 22-cabin MV Yasawa Princess II replacing it that same month. The Yasawa Flyer also leaves Port Denarau. The one confirmed Lautoka departure is the Tavewa Seabus, from Lautoka Kings Jetty at 07:30 daily, returning between 15:00 and 15:30.

The other genuine draw is the hinterland. Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, with Abaca village as base camp, is about 15 km and 30 minutes inland from the city — waterfall circuits, Mount Batilamu, village homestays and the clearest published price list of any Fijian park.

The verdict

For business in Lautoka, book Tanoa Waterfront. It is the only hotel in the city with the rooms, the function space, the gym and the published conference rates, and Marine Drive puts you minutes from the port and the CBD.

For a beach near Nadi airport at well under Denarau money, book Vuda Point — First Landing if you want villas and function space, Anchorage if you want quiet, The Fiji Orchid if you want the best six rooms in the district.

For cheap and central, Lautoka Hotel, which will tell you its prices before you ask.
