Two venues in the Lautoka area publish a real seated capacity: The Boatshed at Vuda Marina, which seats 220, and the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel, whose Old Mill Room is published at up to 170 theatre style with weddings catered to 200. Everywhere else in the city quotes group numbers on request, and most will not put a figure on a website at all.

That is the honest state of group dining in Fiji's second city, and it is worth saying plainly rather than publishing a list of restaurants with invented capacities beside them.

What can the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel actually seat?

The Tanoa Waterfront Hotel is the city's default answer for anything organised. It has 92 rooms and suites, which makes it most of Lautoka's usable business accommodation in one building, and its function inventory is three rooms plus a lawn.

The catch is the unit of measurement. Every published figure is theatre style, which is the most people you can fit facing one direction in rows. Seated dining at round tables with service lanes takes materially fewer — commonly a third less, sometimes more once you add a stage, a dance floor or a buffet line. So the Old Mill Room's 170 is not a 170-person dinner.

What to ask the events team for, in these words: the banquet capacity at rounds of ten, with a buffet and a small stage. That number is the one your run sheet needs.

On the plus side, the Old Mill Room is air-conditioned, has a mounted projector and electronic screen, and opens directly onto the poolside — which gives you a natural pre-dinner drinks area without a second booking. The hotel publishes menus for buffet, canape, light refreshments, cake and sports groups, plus conference and function packages, and it has a dedicated event manager. FINS Restaurant and the Sunset Bar are on site and overlook the harbour.

For a conference rather than a dinner, see our conference venues in Lautoka guide.

What about The Boatshed at Vuda Marina?

This is the Lautoka area's quiet answer for big groups, and the only venue nearby that publishes a seating number without being asked.

The Boatshed Restaurant & Sunset Bar at Vuda Marina seats 220, with more possible on extra tables, runs 10am to 10pm daily, and explicitly hosts groups and functions including weddings, birthdays and corporate events. The menu is deliberately unfussy — salads, sandwiches, pasta, burgers, pizzas and mains — and its own tagline is "go where the locals go", which is a fair description of the room. The marina also has The Boatyard Cafe & General Store, open 6:30am to 5pm, which takes catering orders with 24 hours' notice.

The location is the thing to understand. Vuda Point sits between the two western centres: First Landing Beach Resort & Villas, immediately next door, describes itself as about 15 minutes north of Nadi International Airport and halfway between Nadi and Lautoka. Neither the marina nor the resort publishes a drive time into Lautoka city, so get that from your transport operator rather than assuming it.

For a group flying in and out of Nadi, that position is an advantage, not a compromise — a Vuda dinner is closer to the airport than a Lautoka city dinner.

Why does nobody else publish a number?

Three reasons, none of them sinister. Most Lautoka restaurants are independent, family-run and have no events page because they have no events manager. Most have never needed to publish a capacity because their group business arrives by phone. And several of the venues best suited to a 50-person dinner are clubs and hotel dining rooms where the answer genuinely depends on the night.

The practical consequence: in Lautoka, capacity is a phone call, not a search result. Plan an extra week of lead time compared with Nadi or Denarau.

Which other venues are worth asking?

These are Lautoka-area venues in our directory with a live web or social presence. None of them publishes a group capacity; all of them are plausible for 20 to 50 depending on the night. Treat this as a call list, not a capacity chart.

What should you ask to get a straight answer?

Six questions, in this order, get you a usable quote from any Fijian venue:

  1. What is the banquet capacity at rounds of ten, with a buffet? Not theatre. Not cocktail.
  2. Is there a separate pre-dinner drinks space, or does the group stand in the dining room?
  3. Is this a private space or a section of the main restaurant? The difference matters enormously to a conference dinner.
  4. What is the minimum spend or buyout figure, and what happens if we fall short of the headcount?
  5. What is the wet-weather plan, named room by room? Several of the best options here are open-sided or beachfront.
  6. What is the kitchen's maximum covers in one service? A room that seats 100 and a kitchen that plates 60 at a time will give you a two-hour dinner. Our guide to banquet kitchen capacity explains why this is the question that gets skipped.

Can you do a group dinner without a restaurant?

Yes, and in Lautoka at 100-plus it is often the better answer. You need a site with power and vehicle access, a marquee, tables, chairs and linen, a caterer who can either work from an on-site kitchen or bring their own, lighting, a licensed bar supplier and a wet-weather decision point.

Fiji has the hire infrastructure in the west — Clyde Equipment Marquee Hire is Lautoka-based — and the city has established caterers including Ramlus Catering Services and Arthis Catering & Curry House. The Tanoa Waterfront's Sunset Lawn is the obvious marquee site if you want the hotel's kitchen behind it.

Budget for the infrastructure as a separate line, not as a rounding error on the catering quote.

20, 50 or 100 — what we would book

  • 20 guests. An independent restaurant in the city with a reserved section. Tukuni or Kusima for a Fijian or local menu; the Stadium View for something informal.
  • 50 guests. The Tanoa Waterfront's Conference Room Two or the Old Mill Room, or a Vuda Point resort if you want the water. Confirm the banquet number before you confirm the date.
  • 100 guests. The Boatshed at Vuda Marina is the most straightforward, because it already seats double that. The Old Mill Room is the city alternative, subject to its real banquet figure.
  • Over 200. Marquee the Sunset Lawn with a caterer, split the group across two venues, or move the dinner to Nadi or Denarau.

Your next step

Compare the city against its neighbours before you commit: group dining on Denarau Island and group dining on the Coral Coast both have deeper inventories.
