Where you stay in the Mamanucas is mostly a decision about boat time and who else is on the island. Thirty minutes out of Port Denarau you get day-trip islands and big family resorts; ninety minutes out you get quiet, adults-only and expensive. Nothing in the group is more than about two hours from Nadi, which is the whole point of the Mamanucas.
The Mamanucas are the closest island group to Nadi — a scatter of around twenty small islands west of Viti Levu, reached almost entirely by catamaran from Port Denarau. They are the easiest islands in Fiji to get to, and the trade-off is that they are also the busiest.
How do you choose a Mamanuca island?
Three questions decide it, in this order:
- How long a boat are you willing to take on arrival day? Thirty minutes and two hours are very different ends to a long flight.
- Do you want adults only, families, or a surf camp? The islands sort sharply on this, and the ones that do it well do only one.
- Do you want a resort island or a resort on an island? Some properties have the island to themselves. Others share it with two or three neighbours and a marina.
Budget matters less than people expect, because the Mamanucas carry everything from backpacker dorms to overwater villas within the same forty-minute boat radius.
How long is the boat to each island?
This is the single most useful table for planning a Mamanuca trip. Times are from Port Denarau on scheduled catamaran services; the ranges reflect different routings on the same day, not uncertainty.
| Island / resort | Transfer time from Port Denarau |
|---|---|
| Malamala Beach Club (day club) | 30–45 min |
| South Sea Island | 30 min – 2 hr 15 min |
| Serenity Island | 35 min – 2 hr 10 min |
| Treasure Island, Beachcomber | 45 min – 1 hr 55 min |
| Castaway Island | 50 min – 1 hr 35 min |
| Likuliku Lagoon | 50 min – 1 hr 50 min |
| Malolo, Tropica | 55 min – 1 hr 45 min |
| Malolo Lailai (Plantation, Lomani, Musket Cove) | about 1 hr on the Malolo Cat |
| Vomo | about 1 hr 10 min |
| Mana, Tadrai | 1 hr 15 min – 1 hr 25 min |
| Matamanoa | 1 hr 15 min |
| Tokoriki, Sheraton Tokoriki | 1 hr 45 min |
Transfer times from Fiji Pocket Guide's Mamanuca ferry guide, drawn from the scheduled South Sea Cruises and Malolo Cat routes. Several resorts also sell seaplane and helicopter transfers, which collapse the whole table to 10–15 minutes at a cost.
The practical rule: if your international flight lands after about 2pm, the far islands become an overnight-in-Nadi problem rather than a same-day arrival. Check our hotels near Nadi Airport guide if that is you.
Where should you stay for a quiet, adults-only trip?
The grown-up end of the Mamanucas is small, consistent and sits mostly at the far end of the boat ride. The first three below are adults-only; the last two take families but are quiet by design.
- Likuliku Lagoon Resort — the group's best-known property and the one people mean when they say overwater bures in Fiji. Adults only, on Malolo, roughly 50 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes out.
- Tokoriki Island Resort — adults only, consistently highly rated, at the far north of the group at around 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Matamanoa Island Resort — adults only, 1 hour 15 minutes out, a quieter and generally more affordable alternative to Tokoriki.
- Vomo Island Fiji — a private-island resort about 1 hour 10 minutes out, all-inclusive in style and open to families.
- Six Senses Fiji — on Malolo, the group's luxury-brand entry, with a sustainability programme that is more than a brochure line.
If overwater accommodation is the whole reason for the trip, read overwater bures in Fiji: the complete list before booking, because the national inventory is far smaller than most people assume.
Where should families stay in the Mamanucas?
The family islands are closer in, bigger, and busier — which is exactly what you want with children and a long flight behind you.
- Plantation Island Resort — on Malolo Lailai, about an hour on the Malolo Cat, long established as the family default.
- Malolo Island Resort — family-owned and long established, on Malolo.
- Mana Island Resort & Spa — 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 minutes out, a large resort with a village and backpacker accommodation on the same island.
- Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina — on Malolo Lailai, built around a working marina, which children find more interesting than a pool.
- Treasure Island Resort — 45 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes out, compact and family-focused.
Malolo Lailai deserves a note of its own: Plantation, Lomani Island Resort & Spa and Musket Cove share the island, which means you can walk between three resorts, several restaurants and an airstrip. For a family that wants options without a second boat, it is the most practical address in the group.
What about couples on a mid-range budget?
This is the most crowded part of the market and the easiest to get wrong.
- Lomani Island Resort & Spa — adults only, on Malolo Lailai, so you get the quiet without the two-hour boat.
- Tropica Island Resort — adults only, on Malolo, 55 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes out.
- Navini Island Resort — a small, long-running, family-owned island resort.
- Serenity Island Resort — 35 minutes out at the quick end, which makes it a genuinely viable arrival-day island.
- Castaway Island Resort — 50 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes out, a whole-island resort that takes families and couples equally well.
And the specialists?
- Surf: Tavarua Island Resort is the famous one, built around Cloudbreak and Restaurants, and it books out a long way ahead.
- Private island: Wadigi Island and Tadrai Island Resort are the buy-out and ultra-small options.
- Backpacker: Beachcomber Island Resort and Funky Fish Beach Resort sit at the budget end.
- Day trips, not stays: Malamala Beach Club and Cloud 9 are a day-club and a floating bar respectively. Both are excellent and neither is a place to sleep.
Mamanucas or Yasawas?
Worth settling before you book anything.
| Mamanucas | Yasawas | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Nadi | 30 min – 2 hr by boat | 2 – 4.5 hr by boat |
| Arrival day | Usually same-day, even off a morning flight | Often needs a Nadi night first |
| Character | Developed, busy, wide range of resorts | Remote, quieter, fewer and smaller resorts |
| Best for | Short trips, families, first-timers, anyone with limited days | Longer stays, island-hopping, people who want the distance |
In short: the Mamanucas are where you go when days are tight. The Yasawas reward a longer trip — see where to stay in Fiji's outer islands.
Which island should you book?
- Honeymoon, no children, money available: Likuliku or Tokoriki.
- Honeymoon on a budget: Lomani or Tropica.
- Family with small children: Plantation, Malolo or Mana.
- Four nights or fewer: anything under an hour out — Serenity, Malolo Lailai, Castaway.
- You want the island to yourself: Wadigi or Tadrai.
- You are chasing the wave: Tavarua, booked early.
