Fiji's outer islands — Beqa, Kadavu, Lomaiviti, Wakaya, Laucala and the scatter east of Viti Levu — divide cleanly into three price bands: private-island resorts reached by helicopter or seaplane, mid-range dive and eco resorts reached by a flight plus a boat, and a small number of genuinely affordable island lodges. The transfer, not the room, is what decides your trip.
These are not the Mamanucas or the Yasawas. Getting here takes most of a day in several cases, and the resorts are small — nine to twenty-six units is typical.
What counts as Fiji's outer islands?
Everything outside the two island chains off Nadi. In practice that means Beqa and Yanuca off the south coast, Kadavu to the south, the Lomaiviti group east of Viti Levu, and the private islands of Wakaya and Laucala. Our complete guide to Fiji's outer islands covers the geography; this piece is about where to sleep and what it takes to get there.
Which outer-island resorts are the luxury options?
Kokomo Private Island Fiji in the Kadavu group is the benchmark and the most transparent about access. Its own site describes five Residences and twenty-one Beachfront Villas, and a journey of "approximately 45 to 60 minutes from Nadi" on the resort's own Twin Otter seaplane or AS350 helicopter. The resort allocates the aircraft rather than guaranteeing your preference, and publishes transfer pricing in US dollars: a shared transfer at US$825 per adult (12+) and US$490 per child 3–11, with infants free, or a private helicopter from US$5,000 and a private seaplane from US$7,500, taxes excluded. Note the baggage limit — one checked bag to 20kg plus a 5kg carry-on, which is tighter than most guests expect.
COMO Laucala Island sits at the top of the market with twenty-four private villas according to the long-standing laucala.com site, reached "via AIR LAUCALA or your private jet". Neither durations nor rates are published anywhere we could read.
Royal Davui Island Resort and The Wakaya Club & Spa both appear widely in the luxury and adults-only conversation, but we could not verify unit counts, transfer details or rates from either resort's own website, and we are not going to repeat third-party claims about them. Treat anything you read elsewhere about these two as unconfirmed until the resort tells you directly.
What are the mid-range dive and eco resorts?
This is the strongest part of the outer islands, and the most honestly priced.
| Resort | Units | Getting there | Published rates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beqa Lagoon Resort | 25 bures, including 4 family suites | Roughly a 3-hour drive from Nadi along the Coral Coast to Pacific Harbour, then a boat crossing the resort describes as 45 minutes. Packages include return ground transport and boat transfers; a charter boat outside the schedule adds US$200 | Rate sheet valid to 31 March 2027; the figures sit in a linked sheet we could not open. Children 2 and over recommended |
| Matava Eco Adventure Resort, Kadavu | 10 bures | Fiji Link from Nadi, a 40-minute flight, then a 5-minute truck ride and a boat of about 45 minutes. Transfers included for stays of 5 nights or more; otherwise FJ$150 each way per booking | FJ$710 double / FJ$480 single oceanfront; FJ$830 / FJ$600 oceanview; child 5–12 FJ$125. Experience packages at FJ$1,775 for 5 nights per person twin share, inclusive of Fiji taxes. A fuel surcharge of FJ$25 per person per day applies to boat activities from 1 June 2026 |
| Oneta Resort, Ono, Kadavu | Seven bures and two villas | Fiji Link to Vunisea, then about an hour by boat, weather depending. Boat transfer FJ$150 return per person. A Suva ferry leaves around 10pm and reaches Kavala Bay about 6am | FJ$990–1,760 double occupancy for 2026, rising in 2027, including all meals, activities and 17.5% taxes. Guests under 8 are not accepted. Minimum stay 5 nights |
| Papageno Resort, Kadavu | Six accommodation styles; no count published | Fiji Link from Nadi or Suva to Vunisea, or the Interlink or Goundar ferry from Suva, then a 30-minute boat ride | Not published |
| Toberua Island Resort, east of Viti Levu | 16 bures, plus a three-bedroom villa for up to 10 | A half-hour flight Nadi to Suva — the resort notes up to seven flights daily — or a four-and-a-half-hour drive, then a short vehicle and boat transfer. Transfers operate 24 hours a day | From NZ$450 per night in a Tropical Oceanfront Bure, with travel dates determining the discount. Whole-island hire from NZ$19,800 per night including full catering |
Two honest flags on Toberua. Its own pages give three different transfer times — a 20-minute drive plus a 10-minute boat on the homepage, a 20-minute drive plus a 15-minute boat on the getting-here page, and "short 40-minute transfers from Suva Airport" on that same page. And the buyout page says up to 36 adults while the homepage refers to a group of up to 35. Ask the resort to confirm both before you plan around them.
Is there an affordable outer-island option?
Leleuvia Island Resort in the Lomaiviti group is the one, with private bures and a dormitory. Its published transfer fares from 1 January 2026, inclusive of 15% VAT and return per person, are FJ$100 for an adult and FJ$50 for a child under 12 from Bau Landing, or FJ$180 and FJ$90 from Levuka, with under-4s free. Getting to Bau Landing from Suva is a bus to Nausori and a second bus onward.
Leleuvia also publishes three different crossing times — 35 minutes on its homepage, 40 on its location page and about 45 on its transfers page. The honest answer is "about three quarters of an hour".
Lalati Resort & Spa and Kulu Bay Resort, both on Beqa, sit in the small-boutique bracket, but neither site was readable when we checked and we have no verified figures for either.
How should you choose?
Work backwards from the transfer, because it is the irreversible part of the decision.
- Choose Kokomo if the budget carries a US$825-per-adult shared air transfer and you want a 45-to-60-minute journey rather than a day of it.
- Choose Beqa Lagoon if you want outer-island diving without flying internally — the drive down the Coral Coast plus a 45-minute boat is the most accessible outer-island route from Nadi.
- Choose Matava or Oneta if diving and value matter more than polish, and you can commit to five nights. Both publish real FJD rates inclusive of tax, which is rarer than it should be.
- Choose Toberua if you are coming via Suva, or if you want a whole island for a group — that NZ$19,800 buyout including catering is the clearest group figure published anywhere in the outer islands.
- Choose Leleuvia if cost is the constraint.
And plan a rest day around the arrival. A Kadavu transfer is a 40-minute flight, a truck and most of an hour on a boat; that is not a morning you also want to schedule anything else into.
What should you confirm before booking?
Minimum stays, child policies and seasonal closures, because the outer islands are stricter on all three than the Mamanucas. Oneta alone excludes under-8s, requires five nights and closes seasonally. Then confirm the transfer time and cost in writing, given how often resorts' own pages disagree with each other.
For the wider picture see where to stay in Fiji, private island resorts in Fiji, luxury resorts in Fiji and how long it really takes to get between Fiji's islands. Everything above is listed on the outer islands page.
All figures are those published by each resort and were checked on 24 October 2026. Where a resort's own pages disagree, both figures are given above. Rates, transfer costs and child policies change — confirm directly with the resort.
