Most Fiji island transfers fall between 15 minutes and a full day. Port Denarau to the near Mamanucas is 15–30 minutes by catamaran, the outer Mamanucas 1h15–1h45, and the Yasawas take the whole day on the Yasawa Flyer. Vanua Levu and Taveuni are 45 minutes to 1h25 by air from Nadi.
What follows is the matrix. Every figure below is the operator's own published time, and every figure below is approximate in a way that matters — which is the second half of this article.
How long is the boat transfer from Port Denarau to each Mamanuca resort?
South Sea Cruises runs several catamaran routes out of Port Denarau, and the time to a given island depends on which route calls there. The same resort can be an hour on one sailing and 1h15 on another, purely because of the order of stops.
| Island or resort | Southern route | Northern route | Specialty route |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Sea Island | 30 min | 15 min | — |
| Serenity Island | — | 20 min | — |
| Treasure / Beachcomber | — | 30 min | — |
| Malamala Beach Club | 30 min | — | — |
| Mana / Tadrai | 1 h 15 min | 1 h | — |
| Castaway Island | 1 h 30 min | 1 h 20 min | — |
| Malolo / Tropica / Wadigi | 1 h 35 min | 1 h 30 min | — |
| Likuliku Lagoon | 1 h 40 min | 1 h 35 min | — |
| Matamanoa | — | — | 1 h 15 min |
| Tokoriki | — | — | 1 h 45 min |
South Sea Cruises publishes these as approximate and states they vary with sea conditions and loading. Use them to build a plan; reconfirm them against the timetable current for your travel dates.
The practical read: the Mamanucas are not one destination. Serenity Island Resort and Treasure Island Resort sit inside a half-hour of the marina. Likuliku Lagoon Resort and Tokoriki Island Resort are close to three times that. For a group arriving on an afternoon flight, that difference decides whether you eat dinner on the island or on the mainland.
Is there a faster option to the outer Mamanucas?
Yes, and it is worth pricing. Matamanoa Island Resort publishes three routes to its own door: the South Sea Cruises catamaran at 1h15 (departing 12:00pm, arriving 1:15pm, FJ$194 per adult standard or FJ$233 premium on the 9:45am service); a speedboat at 75 minutes departing 8:15am or 2:45pm, from FJ$265 per person scheduled or FJ$1,135 for a private charter; and a helicopter on demand from FJ$706 per person one way. Rates quoted by the resort and correct at the time of writing — confirm before you budget.
The speedboat is barely faster than the catamaran on paper. What it buys is a departure time that suits your flight, not the ferry's. For a wedding party or an incentive group landing mid-afternoon, that is usually the whole point.
Speedboat and charter operators serving this corridor include Mamanuca Express, SeaFiji and Manu Charters.
How long does the Yasawa Flyer take?
Plan it as a day, not a transfer. The vessel departs Port Denarau each morning by 8.45am, with check-in 30 minutes prior, and is back in Denarau by around 6.00pm. It runs up the chain calling at island after island, so your arrival time is a function of how far north your resort sits.
That structure has three consequences worth planning around:
- One sailing a day. Miss it and the next option is the following morning, or a charter.
- Your return is a morning departure. A late-afternoon international flight out of Nadi is comfortable; a morning one is not.
- The far Yasawas are a genuine travel day in each direction. Build a rest day in on arrival rather than scheduling a site inspection or a welcome function for that evening.
Route maps and the current timetable are published by Yasawa Adventures Fiji, which operates the service.
How long are Fiji's domestic flights?
Flying is what makes Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu viable inside a short programme. Published scheduled durations:
| Route | Duration | Frequency | Operator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nadi – Suva (Nausori) | 30 min | ~10 daily | Fiji Link |
| Nadi – Labasa | 45 min | 1 daily | Fiji Link |
| Nadi – Kadavu | 50 min | 4 weekly | Fiji Link |
| Nadi – Savusavu | 1 h 10 min | 4 daily | Fiji Link |
| Nadi – Taveuni | 1 h 25 min | 2 daily | Fiji Link |
| Nadi – Rotuma | 1 h 30 min | 1 weekly | Fiji Link |
| Suva – Levuka | 10 min | 5 weekly | Northern Air |
| Suva – Koro | 35 min | 1 weekly | Fiji Link |
| Suva – Labasa | 40 min | 2–3 daily | Fiji Link, Northern Air |
| Suva – Moala | 45 min | 1 weekly | Northern Air |
| Suva – Gau | 45 min | 1 weekly | Northern Air |
| Suva – Taveuni | 1 h | 4–5 weekly | Fiji Link, Northern Air |
| Suva – Vanua Balavu | 1 h 10 min | 1 weekly | Fiji Link |
| Suva – Savusavu | 1 h 15 min | 3 weekly | Northern Air |
Note the frequencies as carefully as the durations. A 50-minute flight that operates four days a week is a harder constraint than a 90-minute one that operates daily, because a cancellation has nowhere to go. Full detail sits in our guide to domestic and inter-island flights in Fiji.
Why does the same island show two different transfer times?
Four reasons, and all of them are legitimate:
- Route order. Northern and southern catamaran routes reach the same island in different sequences.
- Vessel. A catamaran on a multi-stop run and a private speedboat are not doing the same job.
- Sea state. Operators say plainly that times vary with conditions and loading.
- Where the clock starts. Some published times run marina to jetty; others include the road leg from Nadi or the hotel.
When a resort and an operator disagree by 15 minutes, neither is necessarily wrong. Ask which route, which vessel, and from where.
What does the matrix leave out?
The road leg and the buffers. A transfer plan that counts only water and air time will be wrong by an hour or more in each direction. You also need the drive to Port Denarau or the airport, the 30-minute ferry check-in, baggage handling for a group, and the connection gap you are willing to accept if the boat is late. Our timed road figures sit in real transfer times from Nadi, and the group-movement mechanics are in ferries and boat transfers for groups.
Ground operators who handle the mainland half of this include Tourist Transport Fiji and Coral Coast Transfers, Tours & Rentals.
So which transfer should you choose?
- Under 90 minutes of travel, flexible timing, small group: scheduled catamaran. It is the cheapest per head and the times are honest.
- Arriving late, or a group that cannot lose an afternoon: private speedboat or helicopter. You are paying for the departure time, not the speed.
- Yasawas: commit to the travel day and build the programme around it. Pretending it is a transfer is how weddings lose their rehearsal dinner.
- Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu: fly, and check the weekly frequency before you commit to dates.
Start from the region rather than the resort — our islands and regions guide sorts them by how long they actually take — then use the Nadi city hub for the mainland end of the journey.
