The Coral Coast runs roughly 80km along the southern shore of Viti Levu, from Natadola in the west through Sigatoka to Korolevu. Where you stay along that stretch matters more than which brand you book: it sets your beach, your drive time from Nadi, and your nightly rate. Natadola has the best swimming; Korotogo has the restaurants; Korolevu is the furthest and the quietest.

How is the Coral Coast laid out?

West to east, five precincts with distinct characters.

PrecinctCharacterBeachDistance from Nadi
Natadola BayGolf, open beach, resort-ledBest swimming on the coastClosest
Cuvu / YanucaLarge-resort territoryReef-fringed, protectedClose
Korotogo (Sunset Strip)Restaurants, mid-range, walkableReef flat, tidalMiddle

One honest caveat before anything else: much of the Coral Coast has a shallow fringing reef close to shore. At low tide that is superb snorkelling and reef walking; it is not swimming. If your group expects to walk off the sand into deep water at any hour, Natadola is the answer and most of the rest of the coast is not.

Drive times along the Queens Road vary with traffic, roadworks and rain. Ask each property for its own stated transfer time rather than relying on a map — real-world figures are discussed in Nadi to Denarau, Coral Coast, Suva and Pacific Harbour transfer times.

Where should you stay if budget is the deciding factor?

Large resorts

These are the properties with the room inventory, the kids' clubs and the conference space.

Where should you stay by purpose?

Families. Outrigger, Warwick, The Naviti, Fiji Hideaway and Gecko's all run as family resorts. The reef gives you shallow, supervised water, which most parents of small children prefer to open surf.

Couples. Tambua Sands is adults only. Wellesley at 15 rooms and Crusoe's Retreat at 28 are small enough to feel private without the adults-only label.

Conferences and incentives. Four properties carry the space: Shangri-La Yanuca Island with Ratu Makutu I and II, Warwick Fiji with a published 874m² across three venues, Outrigger with Reef 1 and 2 combining to 160 theatre and a 100-person Vahavu Pavilion, and InterContinental. Full capacity figures are in conference venues on the Coral Coast and the capacity chart.

Weddings. Chapels at Outrigger, InterContinental, Yatule and Shangri-La; beach, lawn, garden and deck settings across most of the rest. The full list is in wedding venues on the Coral Coast.

Surfing and diving. Matanivusi is built around the breaks. For diving, Coral Coast Divers operates in the region.

What is the trade-off of each precinct?

Natadola Bay. Best beach, closest to Nadi, least walkable — there is essentially nothing outside the resorts. You will eat where you sleep unless you drive.

Cuvu and Yanuca. Big-resort comfort and strong facilities, but you are inside a property rather than in a place. Yanuca Island in particular is a self-contained world.

Korotogo and the Sunset Strip. The one genuinely walkable stretch, with Vilisite's, Crab Shack, Beach Bar n' Grill, Sitar and Koko's Bar within reach of each other. The beach is the weakest part of the deal.

Sigatoka town. Not a place to stay, but the place to buy things, eat cheaply at Raj's Curry House or The Junction, and start a Sigatoka River Safari.

Korolevu and Maui Bay. The prettiest and the furthest. Add 45 minutes to an hour on every airport transfer compared with Natadola, and plan on eating at the resort or driving. Wicked Walu at the Warwick is the standout dinner here.

How do you get around?

Transfers rather than hire cars for most visitors. Operators covering the coast include Coastline Fiji and Coral Coast Transfers Tours & Rentals, both based on the coast itself, plus Tourist Transport Fiji and Pacific Transport Limited for coach work.

The verdict

Choose Natadola if the beach is non-negotiable and you are happy to stay inside a resort for meals.

Choose Korotogo if you want to walk to dinner and care more about value and variety than about swimming off the sand.

Choose Korolevu if you want the scenery and the quiet, and you will accept the longest transfer in the region.

Choose Yanuca or Cuvu if you are bringing a conference or a large family group and want everything in one place.
