The honest answer: on Denarau itself you have golf, a waterpark, resort watersports, a spa circuit and a marina dining strip. Everything else people associate with Denarau — Malamala, Cloud 9, the Mamanuca day islands, the Sigatoka River — happens somewhere else and departs from Port Denarau. Denarau is the best-connected base in Fiji, which is a different thing from being the busiest destination.

That distinction is worth making early, because it changes how you plan a week there.

We have left the price and hours cells empty where the operator does not publish them, rather than guessing. That gap is the single most useful thing to take from this table: on Denarau, golf green fees and watersports rates are quoted on request, and the only activity with transparent public pricing is the waterpark. Ask for rates in writing before you commit a group.

Is the golf worth a morning?

Denarau Golf & Racquet Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course playing 7,150 yards, designed by Eiichi Motobashi and completed in 1993. The layout runs four par-threes, four par-fives and ten par-fours, with the longest hole at 570 yards and the shortest at 170, and all four short holes carry water. The bunkering is Pacific-themed, shaped like marine creatures — which sounds gimmicky and plays better than it reads.

Rental clubs, shoes, trolleys and electric carts are available, along with lessons and daily clinics. The clubhouse does wood-fired pizza, curries, roasts, burgers and salads, with a sports lounge and a 360-degree bar.

For non-golfers in the same party, the club runs tennis — private lessons, adult and junior clinics, doubles tournaments and socials, with ball machines and a tennis pro shop. The number of courts is not published. There is also a mini golf course and a bungee trampoline, which solves the "what do we do with the children for ninety minutes" problem rather well.

Green fees are not published online. For an incentive group, that is a negotiation, not a rate card.

What does Big Bula actually cost?

This is the one Denarau activity with public pricing, so here it is in full. Big Bula Waterpark sits on Resort Drive, opposite The Westin, and runs 10am to 5pm daily.

The park has vertical speed slides branded Fijian Falls, tube slides, cyclone bowls, a lounge pool, a gated area for small children and an obstacle course, with a licensed Tiki bar and cafe, lockers and towel hire. Each entry includes a free same-day Bula Bus ticket, which is a neat touch and tells you something useful — the Bula Bus is how most people move around the island.

What happens at Port Denarau?

The Port is Denarau's town centre and its transport hub in one. It is open 9am to 11pm every day, including public holidays, and holds boutiques, bars, restaurants, spas, bakeries, banks, bottle shops, supermarkets, tour desks and car rental. Local entertainment — dancing and fire shows — runs most evenings, and Captain Cook Cruises notes a free ethnic dance performance of about an hour starting at 6:30pm, which does not run on Sundays.

For eating, Cardo's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar and Hard Rock Cafe Fiji are both on the marina strip, and the full set of marina and resort restaurants that take groups of 20, 50 or 100 is in our Denarau group dining guide.

More importantly, the marina is where almost everything leaves from: scheduled catamaran ferries, water taxis, jet boat transfers, day sails, multi-day island cruises, dive boats and game fishing charters. Captain Cook Cruises Fiji runs its day sails, sunset dinner sails and private charters out of here, and the ferry operators in our directory — Mamanuca Express and SeaFiji among them — all use the same jetties.

Malamala Beach Club describes itself as the world's first beach club on its own island, about 30 minutes from Port Denarau, and states it can accommodate corporate functions of up to 350 people — which makes it one of the few offshore options in Fiji that can take a whole mid-sized conference for an afternoon. Cloud 9 is a two-level floating platform with a bar and a wood-fired pizzeria, reached by boat; it does not publish its location, transfer time, hours or prices, so treat it as an enquiry rather than a booking.

For watersports, both Hydro Sports Fiji and KaiWai Watersports Fiji operate across the Denarau resorts — jet ski safaris, parasailing, flyboarding, tubing, snorkel tours, fishing, diving and sunset cruises between them — and both run desks at multiple properties including the Radisson Blu and Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa. Neither publishes a rate card.

For an inland morning, the Sigatoka River Safari picks up from Denarau resorts early and runs a jetboat trip upriver to a village visit, kava ceremony, lunch and dancing, with guests given a sulu to wear.

How do you get around, and how far is the airport?

The Bula Bus shuttles between the resorts and Port Denarau, resorts run their own shuttles, and taxis are easy to find. Golf carts move between some resorts. You do not need a car unless you intend to drive to Nadi town, Lautoka, the Sabeto valley or down the coast yourself.

Captain Cook Cruises puts the Denarau resorts at about 20 minutes by car from Nadi, with the airport just beyond the town. That is a fair off-peak figure for a private transfer. It is not a planning figure for moving 200 delegates at 4pm on a Friday — for that, read Nadi to Denarau, Coral Coast, Suva and Pacific Harbour: real transfer times.

A ranked shortlist, if you only have three days

  1. One Mamanuca day. This is the reason to be on Denarau. Malamala if you want a beach club with service, a day island if you want quiet, Cloud 9 if you want the party version.
  2. One golf or spa morning. Both are on-island, both are easy, and both leave the afternoon free.
  3. One evening at the Port. Walk the strip, watch the fire show, eat somewhere with a view of the boats.
  4. Big Bula, if there are children. It is the only Denarau activity you can price before you arrive.
  5. A village or river tour, if you have a fourth slot. It is the day people remember, and it is the one that puts money into communities rather than resorts.
