Nadi International Airport to Lautoka is roughly 21 to 22 kilometres north on Queens Road, and a taxi or private car covers it in about 21 to 30 minutes. The local bus takes about 30 minutes and costs a few dollars. There is no shuttle service dedicated to this route, so a group needs a pre-booked coach or a block of private vehicles.

It is one of the easiest transfers in Fiji — a straight run up a sealed main road with no ferry, no domestic flight and no mountain. The things worth planning for are vehicle supply, arrival-bank congestion at the terminal, and what happens in heavy rain.

How long does the transfer take?

Private car / transfer13.4 milesAbout 21 minVaries by operator
Local busNot statedAbout 30 min$2–5

Distances, times and fare bands are Rome2Rio's figures for the Nadi Airport to Lautoka route. Two caveats we are not going to paper over: the same page's route map gives 14.4 miles and 30 minutes, which does not match the 13.4 miles and 21 minutes it quotes for taxi and car, and the fare bands do not state a currency. Treat all of it as indicative and confirm the fare with the driver or operator before you set off.

Our working planning figure is 25 to 35 minutes door to door for a private vehicle in normal daytime traffic, which allows for terminal exit, the Nadi town stretch and finding a specific address in Lautoka.

What are the options?

Taxi. Metered and unmetered taxis queue at the terminal. For one or two people it is the simplest option. Agree the fare before you get in if the meter is not running — this is normal practice in Fiji and not a sign that anything is wrong.

Private transfer. Pre-booked, met at arrivals, fixed price. For anyone arriving late, arriving with equipment, or arriving on a schedule that matters, this is the right answer. Operators running Nadi airport work include Tourist Transport Fiji, Epic Transfer & Tours Fiji, Airport Shuttle Fiji, Micks Fiji Tours & Transfers, Fiji Transfers and Go Local Fiji. At the Lautoka end, Sugar Taxi And Tours and Classic Buses Ltd are locally based.

Local bus. Sunbeam Transport and Pacific Transport Limited both run the Queens Road corridor. Rome2Rio puts Sunbeam at roughly every three hours and Pacific Transport at roughly every four on this pairing, at a few dollars a seat. It is cheap, it works, and it is genuinely how most people make this journey — but with luggage, in heat, after a long-haul flight, it is not what you book for a delegate.

Rental car. Viable, since the route is a straight sealed run and Lautoka is a grid. Fiji drives on the left. See getting around Fiji.

What does it cost per head for a group?

We do not publish a per-head rate for this transfer, because operator pricing is quoted per vehicle per movement and varies with timing, vehicle class and whether you are contracting one leg or a whole programme. Anyone quoting a universal per-head number for a Fijian airport transfer is working from a guess.

What you should ask every operator for, in writing:

  • Price per vehicle per movement, not per person
  • Vehicle seat count, and whether that count includes luggage space for a full load
  • Waiting time included after scheduled landing, and the charge after it
  • What happens if the flight is delayed or diverted
  • Whether a meet-and-greet at arrivals is included or extra

Our coach charter in Fiji guide works through the fleet economics; airport meet and greet for conference groups covers the arrivals-hall operation.

How do you move a group of 20, 50 or 100?

The arithmetic is simple and the constraint is the terminal, not the road.

Group sizeRealistic vehicle planNotes
1–3Taxi or one private carNo pre-booking strictly needed
4–10One vanPre-book; confirm luggage capacity
11–25One mid-size coach, or two vansOne vehicle is simpler than two
26–50One full-size coachAround 50 seats on a standard coach
51–100Two full-size coachesLoad both at once, do not run them in series
100+Multiple coaches, staged by flightStage by arrival bank, not by headcount

The failure mode on this route is not the drive. It is twenty people standing outside the terminal in the sun while a second vehicle is found, because the first one's luggage capacity was smaller than its seat count. Ask about luggage, not just seats.

What happens in bad weather?

Queens Road between Nadi and Lautoka is sealed and well used, so it is not a route that closes lightly. What heavy rain does is slow it: reduced visibility, surface water, and localised flooding in low-lying sections. Fiji's wet season runs roughly November to April, when rainfall tends to come in heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle.

The practical planning response is to add a buffer rather than a contingency route — there is no meaningful alternative road, so build the slack into the schedule. For a departure transfer during the wet season, leaving 30 minutes earlier than the dry-season plan is usually enough. Our guide to roads, traffic and realistic drive times covers the national picture.

Where are you actually going in Lautoka?

Worth confirming before you book, because "Lautoka" covers a spread.

Give your operator the property name, not just the city. A driver sent to "Lautoka" with a group of 40 and no address is a thirty-minute problem.

The verdict

For one or two people, take a taxi and agree the fare. For anyone whose time has a cost, pre-book a private transfer. For a group, contract one operator for every movement in the programme, give them the exact property, and ask about luggage capacity as well as seats.

It is a 25 to 35 minute drive. Treat it as a 45-minute block in the schedule and nothing about it will ever cause you a problem.
