Most visitors need no visa for Fiji. Citizens of the countries on the Fiji Immigration Department's exemption list are issued a visitor permit at the border, valid for up to four months. The harder part comes after the Immigration desk: customs allowances, a cash declaration threshold, and a biosecurity check that delays far more arrivals than passport control does.
Guideline only. Entry, customs and biosecurity rules are set by the Fiji Immigration Department, the Fiji Revenue & Customs Service (FRCS) and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF). They change without much notice. Everything here was last checked on 14 September 2026 — confirm with the authority before you fly.
Do you need a visa for Fiji, and how long can you stay?
Fiji Immigration publishes a visa-exempted countries list whose citizens are "not required to obtain a Fiji visa when travelling to Fiji". It runs to more than 100 countries and territories, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the EU member states and most Pacific neighbours. Everyone else applies before booking: Immigration is explicit that you lodge "prior to purchasing your ticket and boarding the flight".
On arrival the visitor permit "may vary from several days up to a maximum of four months", extendable once "for a period of only two months". Immigration also specifies a passport valid for more than six months, a confirmed return ticket (the wording insists on a confirmed departure date, "not booking/reservation") and proof of funds.

What can you bring into Fiji duty free?
FRCS sets passenger concessions under Concession Code 218. Allowances are per passenger, must be accompanied by you at final disembarkation, and cannot be for sale or carried for someone else. Alcohol, tobacco and vape allowances require you to be 18 or over.
| Category | Allowance per passenger |
|---|---|
| Spirits | 3 litres |
| Wine | 4.5 litres |
| Beer | 4.5 litres |
| Cigarettes, cigars or tobacco | 200 cigarettes, or 200 g net weight |
| Vape liquid / e-cigarettes | 200 ml of liquid; one e-cigarette device |
| Other dutiable goods | FJ$2,000 (FJ$3,000 for Gold Card / AEO holders) |

Do you have to declare cash when you arrive in Fiji?
Above a threshold, yes. Anyone arriving in or leaving Fiji carrying FJ$10,000 or more — or the equivalent in foreign currency or negotiable bearer instruments, on their person or in their baggage — must declare it on a Border Currency Report form, available from airline staff, immigration or customs officers.
The Reserve Bank of Fiji is blunt about the alternative: failing to declare, or declaring falsely, makes a person liable on conviction to "a fine of up to $60,000 or imprisonment of up to 10 years or both". The Reserve Bank separately administers exchange control, which limits currency taken out of Fiji; we could not source a current figure, so confirm it with the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
What is prohibited or restricted at Fiji Customs?
Prohibited: dangerous drugs under the Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004 — opium, cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamines, LSD, synthetic narcotics — drug utensils such as bongs, hash pipes and hookahs, and weapons including flick knives, swordsticks and knuckle-dusters.
Restricted, permit required: firearms (Fiji Police Force); radio transmitters and telecommunications devices (Telecommunications Authority of Fiji); domestic pets (BAF, with quarantine clearance before travel); and items made from endangered species, including tabua, the whale's tooth central to Fijian ceremony (iTaukei Affairs Board and Department of Environment). A tabua is a ceremonial object, not a souvenir, and moving one without the permit is a cultural as well as a legal misstep.

What will Biosecurity take off you at Nadi?
This is where arrivals come unstuck. BAF requires you to declare all biosecurity risk goods — food, plants and plant products, animal products and used equipment — and screens bags by x-ray, physical inspection or both. Undeclared items carry a spot fine of FJ$400; prosecution runs to FJ$20,000, six months' imprisonment, or both. BAF states plainly that the arrival card "is a legal document and required by law". Amnesty bins sit before the inspection point.
| What you are carrying | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| All food — cooked, raw, packaged, snacks, airline food | Declare | Includes the snack from the plane |
| Fresh or dried fruit and vegetables | Declare | Often surrendered |
| Meat, eggs, dairy, honey, pet food | Declare | Most animal products need a BAF permit |
| Seeds, nuts, spices, herbs, un-popped popcorn | Declare | Seeds especially |
| Wooden carvings, masks, drums; bamboo, cane, rattan and coconut-straw items; flowers, plants, cuttings | Declare | The common souvenir problem |
| Used tents, camping gear, hiking or sports boots, bicycles, golf clubs, fishing gear | Declare | Clean off the soil first |
| Soil, rock and mineral samples; vaccines, cultures, preserved insects | Declare | |
| Live animals and pets | Restricted | BAF permit and quarantine clearance |

Declaring costs nothing and takes a minute; not declaring costs FJ$400 and takes an hour. Tick yes whenever unsure.
Do the rules apply between Fiji's islands too?
They do, and almost nobody expects it. BAF maintains emergency and controlled areas inside Fiji, so moving the wrong thing on a domestic flight or ferry is an offence. Parts of Lautoka and Labasa are restricted for Asian subterranean termites; Qamea, Matagi, Taveuni and Laucala are restricted for American iguana; Rotuma is a fruit fly controlled area covering mango, citrus, kavika, breadfruit, papaya and vutu. Penalties reach FJ$50,000. Carry no fruit, plants, untreated timber or soil on an inter-island hop, and check Travel Within Fiji.
What about the arrival card and departure tax?
You receive a Fiji Passenger Arrival Card before landing, carrying both declarations. A digital arrival card has been in development with UNDP support, but we could not confirm a live official portal — complete the card issued on board unless Immigration says otherwise, and ignore third-party sites charging a fee.
Departure tax sits in the fare. FRCS records the Airport Departure Tax rising to FJ$140, effective 1 January 2024, and the Act's regulations require the tax to be "shown on every purchased airline ticket", so there is no counter to queue at. The Act exempts children under 12, crew on duty, and passengers departing within 96 hours of arriving from outside Fiji. Confirm the current rate with FRCS.
What should a group organiser brief a delegation on?
One page, before ticketing:
- Passport valid more than six months, and a confirmed return ticket, not a held reservation.
- Nobody brings food. Not fruit, not nuts, not the snack from the plane.
- Tick yes if in doubt. Declaring is free.
- Clean shoes and sports gear — muddy boots and golf shoes get pulled.
- Flag drones, radio gear and samples early.
- No one carries FJ$10,000 or more without the currency form.
Build the ground plan around the queue, not the schedule: Nadi inspection times are unpredictable, so pre-book transfers rather than leave a group hunting taxis — Epic Transfer and Tours Fiji is one Nadi operator. For red-eye arrivals, a first night at Fiji Gateway Hotel or Tanoa International Hotel beats an extra resort night at the far end: it spares a long coastal drive at 5am.
So which route applies to you?
Take the do-nothing route if you hold an exempt passport, are staying under four months and are carrying clothes and a laptop: fill in the card, answer honestly, walk through. Take the plan-ahead route if you are bringing equipment, a pet, samples, meaningful cash or a group — each needs a decision weeks out, not at the inspection bench.
