Fiji Airways suspended its Nadi–Dallas/Fort Worth service on 7 September 2026, closing its longest scheduled route less than two years after launch. In the same period it opened Nadi–Gold Coast, upgraded Vancouver to the A350 and added Hong Kong frequency. For planners and couples with 2026–27 bookings, the Dallas change is the one that requires action.
Here is what has changed, what it means for group travel, and what to verify before you build an itinerary on it.
What happened to the Dallas route?
Fiji Airways suspended Nadi–Dallas/Fort Worth effective 7 September 2026. The route launched in December 2024, making its life under two years.
The airline cited "the ongoing impact of high jet fuel prices and changes in passenger demand", with management noting that jet fuel prices had "more than doubled since the start of the year". Reporting on the decision also cites a 59% load factor on the route. CEO Paul Scurrah said the changes allow the airline to "focus on markets where we are seeing the strongest and most sustainable demand".
Affected passengers are being rebooked on same-day alternatives via Los Angeles, San Francisco or Vancouver.
What this means for planners: if you have a North American group with connections built through DFW, that routing no longer exists. American Airlines' Dallas hub was the natural feed for delegates from Texas, the US South and much of the Midwest, and those itineraries now route west coast. Check any 2026–27 group booking that touches Dallas, and re-check connection times — a west coast routing is a different day for many origins.
What is the current long-haul picture?
| Change | Effective | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Nadi–Dallas/Fort Worth suspended | 7 Sep 2026 | Rebooking via LAX, SFO or YVR |
| Nadi–Gold Coast launched | 11 Jun 2026 | 3x weekly (Tue, Thu, Sat), Boeing 737 MAX 8 |
| Vancouver upgraded to A350 | 8 Sep 2026 | Three weekly services, up from A330 |
| Hong Kong increased | 22 Sep 2026 | To 4x weekly, year-round |
| WestJet codeshare expanded | May 2026 | North American connectivity via Vancouver |
| Los Angeles and San Francisco | Current | Up to 11 weekly flights combined |
The shape of the strategy is clear enough: consolidate North America onto the west coast gateways, deepen the Australian network, and hold Asia through Hong Kong.
What does the Gold Coast route change?
More than it first appears. Fiji Airways' Australian network already carried Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane; Gold Coast adds a fourth Australian gateway on a 737 MAX 8 three times weekly.
For wedding parties in particular this matters, because South East Queensland guest groups previously fed through Brisbane. A direct Gold Coast service removes a domestic leg for a meaningful slice of the guest list, and Australia is by far Fiji's largest source market — 452,422 arrivals in 2025, 45.9% of all visitors, per the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.
The three-times-weekly frequency is the constraint. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday departures do not suit every wedding date, and a group that cannot all travel on one of those days is back to Brisbane. Check the day pattern against your date before you promise it to guests.
What does this mean for conference lift?
Fiji's air access story has always been one of concentration rather than breadth: a strong Australia and New Zealand network, a workable US west coast presence, and thin everything else.
The Dallas suspension reinforces that. A conference drawing significant North American delegation now has three realistic US and Canadian gateways — Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver — rather than four. Up to 11 weekly flights combined across LAX and SFO is decent capacity, but it is concentrated, and a large group needs to be in the market early.
For Australian and New Zealand conferences, which is the bulk of Fiji's business events demand, nothing has got worse and Gold Coast makes one corner of it better.
An honest caveat on these figures
We were unable to reach fijiairways.com directly while compiling this. Everything above comes from named reporting — AirlineGeeks, Travel and Tour World, Aviation Week, the Dallas Morning News, FBC News and Simple Flying — rather than from the airline's own published schedule.
Route changes are exactly the kind of information that moves, and airline schedules are revised continuously. Confirm current routes, days and frequencies with Fiji Airways directly before contracting any group movement. Do not build an arrival profile for 200 delegates on a news summary, including this one.
The same caution applies to Fiji Link, the domestic subsidiary. Widely cited frequencies and the commonly quoted 7 kg carry-on and 15 kg checked baggage allowances come from third-party guides, not the airline. That baggage limit in particular catches out delegates connecting from a long-haul flight with a full international allowance.
What should you actually do now?
- Audit any 2026–27 booking routing through Dallas. It is gone. Rebook via LAX, SFO or YVR and re-check connection times.
- If you have South East Queensland guests, test the Gold Coast service against your dates — three weekly, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
- For North American conference delegations, book early. Three gateways, not four.
- Verify everything with the airline before it goes into a delegate or guest communication.
- Watch this space. Fuel pricing is driving these decisions and the airline has been explicit about that. Further adjustment is plausible.
