If your delegates fly in from overseas, hold the conference in Nadi or on Denarau Island. If your delegates are already in Fiji — ministries, regional agencies, banks, the university, the diplomatic corps — hold it in Suva. Almost every other consideration is secondary to that one, and the reason is an airport whose name promises more than it delivers.

This is the decision framework, including the part nobody puts in a bid document.

Where does international lift actually land?

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is Fiji's international gateway and, for practical purposes, its only one. Long-haul and trans-Tasman services concentrate there, and getting a group into Fiji sets out what that means for seat availability and group fares.

Suva is served by Nausori International Airport (SUV). It is called international, and it is — technically. Its only scheduled international route is to Nauru, flown by Nauru Airlines. Everything else is domestic, operated by Fiji Link and Northern Air. Passenger figures from 2019 make the shape of it obvious: 366,506 total passengers, of whom 329,112 were domestic and 37,394 international.

So an overseas delegate bound for Suva lands at Nadi and then does one of two things: takes a domestic connection to Nausori, or gets on a coach.

The Nausori problem, stated plainly

A domestic connection sounds neat. In practice it introduces a second check-in, a second baggage handling event, a small-aircraft weight limit, and a schedule that has to align with an international arrival that may itself be late. For an individual traveller this is fine. For a group of 200 arriving across a six-hour window, it is a logistics problem with real failure modes.

And once at Nausori, delegates are still roughly 23 km and about 45 minutes from central Suva.

How far apart are these two cities, really?

LegDistanceTypical timeNotes
Nadi Airport → Denarau Island~7 km~15 minThe shortest airport-to-resort transfer in Fiji
Nadi → Sigatoka~55 km~55 minCoral Coast approach
Nadi → Pacific Harbour~140 km~2 hr 20 minMidpoint option
Nadi → Suva (Queens Road)~186 km~3 hr 10 minSouthern coastal route
Nausori Airport → Suva CBD~23 km~45 min

Times are approximate and assume daylight, dry conditions and no incident. Fiji's maximum speed limit is 80 km/h, and the Queens Road passes through towns and villages where it drops well below that.

For planning a coach movement, add to the three-hour figure: load time, a comfort stop, unload time, and the tail of a group that never assembles on schedule. Plan four hours, and plan it as a programme day, not a morning. Moving 100, 300 and 800 delegates around Fiji works through the vehicle mathematics.

What can each city actually hold?

Fiji venue capacities are poorly published and frequently contradictory — which Fiji venue is actually the largest? documents where the public figures disagree, and the Fiji conference venues and capacity chart is the maintained comparison. What follows is the Suva picture specifically, from what properties publish themselves.

Suva propertyPublished event capabilityGuest rooms
Novotel Suva Lami Bay7 meeting spaces; largest 1,248 m², stated up to 800 convention-style / 400 banquet106
Grand Pacific Hotel6 function venues, 2,361 m² total meeting space, Grand Britannia Ballroom113
Holiday Inn Suva3 glass-walled meeting rooms plus poolside pavilion, stated up to 350 delegatesnot published
Tanoa Plaza HotelConference and event space, capacities not published60

Figures retrieved from each property's own website on 12 September 2026. Where a property does not publish a capacity, we have left it blank rather than estimate.

The honest read: Suva has genuine capacity, and Novotel Suva Lami Bay's largest space is substantial by Fijian standards. What Suva lacks is concentration — a single precinct where 400 delegates sleep, meet, eat and drink without getting into a vehicle. Denarau Island is exactly that precinct, which is why resort-based conferences gravitate there.

Who should choose Suva?

Suva is the right answer more often than the resort market admits. Choose it when:

  • Your delegates are already in Suva. Government ministries, the University of the South Pacific, regional organisations, development partners, banks, insurers and the diplomatic corps are headquartered there. Moving a mostly-local room to Nadi costs three hours each way and buys nothing.
  • The programme needs the institutions. Ministerial openings, site visits to agencies, embassy receptions and policy roundtables happen where the institutions are.
  • It is a working conference, not an incentive. If nobody is expecting a beach, the beach is not worth 186 km.
  • Budget matters and the programme is content-heavy. Suva is a capital city with city hotel pricing rather than resort pricing, though as noted below, very few properties publish enough to prove it.

What you accept in exchange

Suva sits on the windward southeastern side of Viti Levu, and it is markedly wetter than the west. Plan indoor plenaries, covered circulation between venues, and umbrellas in the delegate bag. Outdoor set-pieces in Suva need a real wet-weather alternative, not an optimistic one.

You also accept that overseas delegates arrive tired, having added either a domestic connection or a three-hour road leg to an already long journey.

Who should choose Nadi or Denarau?

  • Any conference where most delegates fly in. Fifteen minutes from the aircraft door to the resort lobby is not a small advantage; it is the single biggest quality-of-arrival factor in Fiji.
  • Incentives and reward programmes, without exception.
  • Events with an island or water component — the Mamanucas depart from Denarau.
  • Conferences that want one precinct. Rooms, plenary, breakouts, F&B and evening venues within walking distance removes an entire category of risk.
  • Anything where a late international arrival must still make the opening session.

Airport-adjacent properties such as Tanoa International Hotel handle arrival-day and pre-conference nights; Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort is one of several Denarau properties built around resort conferencing.

Can you split the programme?

Yes, and for some events it is the best answer: business sessions in Suva where the institutions are, then a transfer west for the incentive, partner programme or closing dinner.

The rule is to treat the transfer as a day. Do not schedule a session on either side of it. Build the coach leg into the programme as a scenic drive along the Coral Coast with a proper lunch stop, and it becomes a feature rather than a loss. Operators including Tourist Transport Fiji and Central Transport Company run coach fleets capable of the movement.

What does it cost?

We cannot give a credible comparison, and no honest publication can. Fiji conference properties overwhelmingly quote on enquiry, and a page that gives you an average day-delegate rate for Suva versus Denarau is guessing.

One useful exception: Holiday Inn Suva publishes meeting packages from FJ$101 per person on a minimum of 25 guests, with venue hire from FJ$650. That is a real published number in a market that mostly refuses to give one.

Ask every shortlisted property the same four questions in writing: the day-delegate rate and what is in it, the venue hire if you take the space without the catering, the minimum food and beverage spend, and whether the quoted figures include VAT and service charge. The fourth question moves the number more than the other three combined. What a Fiji conference costs per delegate sets out the rest of the model.

Next step: count what share of your expected room already lives in Fiji. If it is more than half, shortlist Suva. If it is less, shortlist Denarau and stop deliberating.
