Two Fiji properties claim, on their own websites, to have the country's largest conference facility. Measured on the only basis that matters to a planner — the largest single indoor room — the Denarau Island Convention Centre at Sheraton Fiji wins, at 1,755 m² and 1,500 theatre. Measured on total function space including outdoor lawns, Shangri-La Yanuca Island has the stronger claim. Both claims are true on their own terms, and neither is stated that way.

Here is the adjudication, with every figure sourced and every contradiction named.

Who actually claims to be the largest?

Three claims exist, and they do not say the same thing.

Shangri-La Yanuca Island states flatly on its meetings page: "The Resort is home to Fiji's largest MICE facility." Unhedged, and the only property in the country to make the claim in those words.

Sheraton Fiji makes two different claims on two pages of the same website. Its meetings landing page calls the Denarau Island Convention Centre "the largest fully air-conditioned convention center in Nadi, Fiji" — carefully geographically hedged. Its venues page calls it "the largest convention space in the South Pacific" — a far bigger claim, unhedged. A third-party directory renders the same venue as "the largest meeting space on Denarau Island".

Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay claims only to be "Fiji's most convenient conference venue" — a convenience claim, not a size claim. The "largest" language around its Crown Convention Centre comes from trade press coverage of the November 2025 opening, not from the property.

Nobody else claims it. Not the Grand Pacific Hotel, not InterContinental Fiji, not Warwick Fiji, not Sofitel, not Momi Bay, not Novotel Suva.

Measured by largest single indoor room, who wins?

This is the measure that decides whether your plenary fits, so it is the one we lead with.

Sheraton Fiji wins this measure, and it is not close. The Denarau Island Convention Centre is nearly three times the floor area of the next facility actually marketed for conferences, and more than double its theatre capacity.

The runner-up is a surprise. Novotel Suva's Entertainment Centre, at 1,248 m², is by published floor area the second-largest single event space in Fiji — larger than any hotel ballroom in the country apart from the DICC. It is not marketed as a convention venue and Accor publishes no theatre figure for it beyond a maximum of 800, but if you need a big flat floor IN Suva, it exists.

Why do the Sheraton's own numbers contradict each other?

Because one of Marriott's pages has printed square-foot values under a square-metre heading.

Marriott's meetings page gives the DICC as "1,755 square meters". Marriott's venues chart on the same website gives it as "18,890.8 sq m (203,280 sq ft)". A third-party directory gives the same room as 18,890.7 square feet. The two Marriott figures differ by a factor of 10.76 — which is precisely the square feet to square metres ratio.

The same error runs down that page. The Golden Ballroom appears as "6,458.4 sq m" where trade coverage of the 2019 opening and a Fiji directory both give 600 m², and 6,458.3 sq ft elsewhere. Even the ceiling heights are foot values labelled as metres, which is how the venues chart ends up claiming an 11.8 metre ceiling.

Use 1,755 m². It is corroborated by four independent sources — Marriott's own meetings page, trade coverage of the centre's May 2019 opening, a Fiji venue directory, and the square-foot figure in a third-party listing. Total function space across the property is 3,551 m², not the 36,428 m² the venues chart implies.

Is Shangri-La's claim wrong?

Not wrong — differently measured. Shangri-La Yanuca Island publishes a full capacity chart, and it is a large facility:

SpaceFloor areaCapacity
Ratu Makutu Events Centre648 m²650 theatre, 500 banquet
Davui Hall264 m²400 theatre, 300 banquet
South Pre-Function433 m²340 reception
North Pre-Function178 m²140 reception
Rara (outdoor)1,305 m²1,000 reception

An independent Fiji venue guide puts the resort's total meeting space at 3,799 m², ahead of Sheraton Fiji's 3,551 m². So on aggregate space, Shangri-La leads — but the lead comes from the 1,305 m² outdoor Rara lawn, which is the single largest space on its chart and is grass.

That is the honest reading of the claim. "Fiji's largest MICE facility" is defensible as a statement about total square metres across a resort. It is not defensible as a statement about how many delegates you can seat in one room, where Shangri-La's 650 is less than half the DICC's 1,500.

Which numbers should you not trust?

Three sets, and the Crowne Plaza's are the worst in the country.

The Crown Convention Centre. Five sources, five different capacities:

SourceCapacity
Crowne Plaza Fiji's own convention centre page900 delegates
Crowne Plaza Fiji's own venues list900 theatre / 600 banquet
IHG.com events and facilities page1,450 guests
Travel Weekly and CIM Business Events, 19 November 2025up to 1,500 guests
TravelTalk, 18 November 2025600-seat convention centre

A hotel group and its own property differ by 550 seats. Floor area is worse: the resort publishes none at all, the trade press reports 925 m², and total event space is given as 1,540 m² across seven venues by the resort and 16,576 m² across six or eleven venues by trade coverage — an order-of-magnitude conflict, with the venue count also varying.

For the record, the 493 m² figure that circulates for the Crowne Plaza is not the convention centre. It is the older Baravi Ballroom, published at 493 m² / 525 theatre by both the resort and IHG.

Third-party directory figures generally. Directory listings are venue self-reported and often undated, and they conflict with the properties' own sites more often than not — Warwick's Talanoa Hall is 510 m² / 400 theatre on its own site and roughly 679 m² / 650 max in a directory; Sofitel's Grand Ballroom is 550 banquet on its own site, 640 on its parent group's events site and 700 max in a directory.

Internally inconsistent hotel pages. Hilton Fiji's events page states total event space of 385 m² while listing individual spaces of 6,685, 3,989 and 3,223 m² on the same page. Fiji Marriott Momi Bay states 424 m² total while listing a 355 m² ballroom plus an 1,100 m² pre-function area.

What about outdoor space?

Worth knowing, because Fiji's biggest single capacity figure is a lawn. Hilton Fiji's Koro Lawn is published at 3,989 m² with a reception capacity of 2,000 and a banquet capacity of 1,500 — the largest published single-space reception capacity in the country. Shangri-La's Rara takes 1,000 reception on 1,305 m².

Outdoor space is real capacity and it is how Fiji does its best gala dinners. It is not plenary capacity, it needs a wet-weather plan, and it should be costed with marquee hire and a power run rather than treated as free.

So what is the verdict?

Largest single indoor conference room in Fiji: the Denarau Island Convention Centre at Sheraton Fiji, 1,755 m², 1,500 theatre. No other venue in the country publishes an indoor theatre capacity above 900 on its own website.

Largest total function space at one property: Shangri-La Yanuca Island, at roughly 3,799 m² against Sheraton Fiji's 3,551 m² — with the caveat that Shangri-La's total includes a 1,305 m² lawn.

Largest covered assembly space of any kind: Vodafone Arena in Suva, at 5,000 seats plus bleachers. It is a sports arena with no conference fit-out, no breakout rooms and no attached accommodation, and it is not a competitor for a conference.

And the practical ceiling is lower than any of these numbers suggest, because no Fijian property has more than about 443 rooms. A 1,500-delegate plenary at the DICC needs the whole Denarau Marriott complex and then most of the island. Fiji for business events: what it can and cannot do works that constraint through.

One rule stands above all of this: verify in writing before you bid. Fiji's largest venues contradict themselves on their own websites, contradict their parent groups, and contradict the trade press. A capacity figure is a claim to confirm, not a fact to build on.

Next step: shortlist on largest single room, then ask each property to confirm the floor area and theatre capacity in writing, with a floor plan. Fiji conference venues and capacity chart has the full published dataset, what a Fiji conference costs per delegate turns a delegate count into a budget, and Fiji conference hotels and resorts A–Z covers the properties individually.
