Because the paperwork is a weekday errand, guests fly in without a visa, and the ceremony can happen on a beach, in an island chapel or on a lawn — inside a country your marriage certificate follows you home from. Ten reasons to get married in Fiji, each with a verifiable fact behind it, not an adjective.
1. The legal paperwork is a weekday errand, not a six-month project
Fiji marriages are handled by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages under the Ministry of Justice — the registry is at Suvavou House, Victoria Parade, Suva, with divisional offices in Lautoka and Labasa.
Visiting couples normally use the special licence rather than the 21-day notice route. Fiji's own consular guidance states it "is effective immediately after the application is received (within one working day)" and is valid for 21 days from issue; no minimum residency period appears there. Tourism Fiji advises booking an appointment at the nearest registry or district office, 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
Bring certified birth certificates, passports, a decree absolute or death certificate where relevant, a statutory declaration or certificate of single status, and two witnesses with photo ID. Two Fiji government sources disagree on the witness age — consular guidance says 21 and over, Tourism Fiji says 18. Plan on 21 and confirm.
The fees are published — Ministry of Justice rates effective 1 August 2019, converted at the Reserve Bank of Fiji rate of 8 September 2026 (F$1 = NZ$0.7686 = A$0.6258).
| Ministry of Justice fee item | FJD | ≈ NZD | ≈ AUD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notice of marriage and declaration | $16.35 | $12.57 | $10.23 |
| Application for special licence | $54.50 | $41.89 | $34.11 |
| Registrar solemnising marriage (incl. certificate) | $54.50 | $41.89 | $34.11 |
| Solemnising outside normal office hours (incl. certificate) | $109.00 | $83.78 | $68.21 |
It travels home. New Zealand's government states that "most overseas marriages are valid in New Zealand". Victoria's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages says you cannot register an overseas marriage in Australia, but "in most cases, the marriage will be legally recognised in Australia if it's legally recognised in the country you married in."
This is a guideline only — confirm current requirements with the Fiji Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages before you book.
2. Your guests are travelling a route that is busier than it has ever been
In July 2026 Fiji recorded 105,791 visitor arrivals — the highest monthly total ever, and the first month above 100,000. The Fiji Bureau of Statistics counted 986,367 arrivals across 2025, up 0.3% on 2024.
Volume is what keeps seats, transfers and resort staffing available in the months you want. Flight durations and frequencies change by season and carrier, so take those from the airline's own timetable.
3. Most of your guest list will not need a visa
Fiji's Ministry of Immigration lists New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada among its visa-exempted countries. Those passport holders are issued a visitor permit on arrival instead, running "from several days up to a maximum of four months".
Immigration still expects a passport valid more than six months, a confirmed return ticket, proof of funds and confirmed accommodation — but no consular queue and no application fee for most of your guest list.
This is a guideline only — confirm current requirements with the Fiji Ministry of Immigration before you book.
4. Nobody arrives jet-lagged from Auckland, Sydney or Melbourne
Fiji runs on UTC+12 all year. It last observed daylight saving from 20 December 2020 to 17 January 2021, and in October 2023 Cabinet agreed to suspend it and consider repealing the Daylight Saving Act 1998.
UTC+12 is New Zealand's standard-time offset exactly, and two hours ahead of Australian Eastern Standard Time. Guests land, shower and go to the welcome drinks — no lost day at either end.
5. The ceremony setting is a genuine choice — and some of the numbers are published
Chapel, beach, garden lawn, deck or a private cay — verified ceremony spaces in the MICE Fiji directory, with the capacity each property publishes.
| Property | Where | Ceremony setting | Published ceremony capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina | Mamanucas | Island Chapel | 80 |
| Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina | Mamanucas | Coral Cay Island | 100 |
| Shangri-La Yanuca Island | Coral Coast | Seaside Chapel | 40 |
| Uprising Beach Resort | Pacific Harbour | Beachside ceremony | 20 |
| Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort | Denarau | Ocean-side wedding chapel | not published |
| Nanuku Resort | Pacific Harbour | Private island, beach, Club House Lawn, Sunset Deck | not published |
| Vomo Island Fiji | Mamanucas | Island Chapel | not published |
| Yasawa Island Resort | Yasawas | Beach ceremony | not published |
Read the right-hand column honestly: plenty of properties publish no ceremony capacity, so any guest list above 60 gets confirmed in writing first. Start with Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina, Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Nanuku Resort or Uprising Beach Resort.
6. English is the official language, so nothing is lost in the paperwork
The Embassy of the Republic of Fiji states that "English is the official language and majority speaks English". The 2013 Constitution is adopted in English with iTaukei and Hindi translations, and section 3(4) provides that where the versions differ, the English version prevails.
For a couple marrying abroad that is a document risk removed: licence, certificate and registry appointment all happen in your own language, and an English-language birth certificate needs no certified translation.
7. You are spending in Fiji dollars, and they are not your dollars
Everything is quoted in Fiji dollars. On 8 September 2026 the Reserve Bank of Fiji published F$1 = NZ$0.7686 and F$1 = A$0.6258 — so NZ$1 buys about F$1.30 and A$1 about F$1.60.
Fiji's VAT rate has been 12.5% since 1 August 2025, per the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service. Ask every supplier whether a quote is VAT-inclusive and whether tourism levies sit on top — that question moves a wedding quote more than any exchange-rate movement.
8. There is a defined dry season, and it is not a marketing invention
The Fiji Meteorological Service defines the wet season as November to April and the dry season as May to October. The tropical cyclone season runs November to April, with peak activity between January and March.
Its 2025–26 outlook expected four to five tropical cyclones in the RSMC Nadi area of responsibility, below the long-term average of seven, with one to two passing through Fiji's exclusive economic zone. A May-to-October date sits outside that window entirely. More on timing in the Fiji travel practicalities guide.
9. Fijian culture is in the ceremony, not on the brochure cover
Tourism Fiji names the elements couples actually build in: a meke performance, masi bark cloth worn by the wedding party, salusalu garlands, the sulu vakataga for the men, a lovo feast slow-cooked underground, kokoda, yaqona, a bilibili raft entrance, a warrior escort, and iri fans or lali drums as guest gifts.
None of that is a floorshow bolted onto a foreign ceremony. Read Fijian wedding traditions before choosing a celebrant, and Fiji wedding catering before deciding whether the lovo is the main event or the second night. A licensed celebrant such as Celebrant Fiji will say what is appropriate.
10. Your guests get a holiday, not a Saturday afternoon
Fiji is a group of 330 islands, about a third of them settled, across 18,333 square kilometres of land. That is the argument for a destination wedding: the people who fly for you get a week, not an afternoon.
The directory holds the operators who fill the other six days — river safaris with Sigatoka River Safari, day sailings, cooking schools, dive days. Send guests the Fiji wedding guest guide with the save-the-date, point honeymooners at the Fiji honeymoon guide, and use the Fiji islands guide to pick the island group.
The three things Fiji is not good for
A December or January date. November to April is both the wet season and the cyclone season, per the Fiji Meteorological Service, with January to March the peak. Many couples marry then anyway — but you are buying weather risk, so insure it.
A quick hop to an outer-island resort. The Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau by 8.45am and is back around 6.00pm, running north as far as the Blue Lagoon region. A Yasawa property is close to a full travel day at each end — build a rest day around it.
Paperwork on a weekend. The registry appointment is in person, on a weekday, in office hours — 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Land Friday night for a Saturday ceremony and the licence will not be ready. Arrive with two clear working days.
Choose Fiji if — and your next step
Choose Fiji if your guest list is mostly in New Zealand or eastern Australia, if you want the legal side finished in one weekday appointment, and if you would rather your people had a week in the Mamanuca Islands than a round trip. Choose elsewhere if January is your only workable date.
Shortlist by ceremony capacity, not by photograph. Open the wedding venues category, compare the published numbers, and send every shortlisted property the same three questions: what does the ceremony space hold, is the quote VAT-inclusive, and who handles the registry appointment.
