Yes — most Fiji resorts allow you to bring your own photographer, and very few operate a genuine exclusivity clause. What they do impose is cost: an outside photographer usually has to be accommodated at the resort, and on island properties you also cover their transfers and meals. Budget for a room night before you budget for the shoot.
That is the short answer. The detail is where couples get caught out, because "allowed" and "free" are different words.
Do Fiji resorts have exclusive photographer clauses?
Rarely, on the published evidence. Plantation Island Resort states plainly that it works with local photographers but "the choice is ultimately up to you". The Remote Resort lists four recommended photographers and also sets out the terms for bringing your own. Leleuvia Island Resort is upfront that as a remote island it has no on-site salon or florist and will help you arrange what you need.
None of those is an exclusivity clause. They are preferred-supplier lists, which is a different thing — a preferred supplier knows the light, the tide and where the resort will let you stand at 5.40pm, and that knowledge has real value.
What you should still do is get it in writing. Ask the coordinator one question by email: "Is there any fee, restriction or accommodation requirement if we bring an outside photographer?" The answer takes thirty seconds and settles it.
What does it cost to bring an outside photographer?
The published terms cluster around accommodation rather than a flat vendor fee.
| Resort | Outside photographer policy | Published cost |
|---|---|---|
| Plantation Island Resort | Permitted; resort suggests local alternatives | Accommodation at FJ$350 per person for extended coverage |
| The Remote Resort | Permitted; four photographers recommended | Couple covers airfare, meals, transport and accommodation |
| Leleuvia Island Resort | Island photographer available; staff assist with outside arrangements | Not published |
| Tropica Island Resort | Not published | Not published |
FJ$350 converts to roughly NZ$276 or A$221 at the mid-market rate on 19 September 2026. Confirm the current rate before you budget.
The pattern is consistent across island Fiji and it is not really a policy so much as geography. If the ceremony is on an island reached by a 45-minute boat, your photographer cannot drive home at 9pm. Someone pays for that night, and it is you.
Mainland resorts on Denarau, around Nadi and on the Coral Coast are materially cheaper on this point, because a Nadi-based photographer can work a Coral Coast wedding and go home. That is one of the quieter arguments for a mainland venue.
Should you fly in a photographer from home?
Usually not, and the reason is not cost.
A photographer who has never shot in Fiji is guessing at three things that matter: how hard the light is at 2pm, how fast it goes at 6pm, and what a white dress does against white sand under a tropical sun. Fiji's golden hour is short and it moves by more than an hour across the year. Our month-by-month golden hour table shows the scale of it.
There is also the cost multiplier. Flying a photographer from Auckland or Sydney means airfares, three to four nights of accommodation, meals and transfers on top of their fee — frequently doubling the line item. For that money you can often engage a senior Fiji-based photographer and a second shooter.
The case for bringing your own is genuinely strong in one situation: you have worked with them before, they know how you photograph, and the relationship is the point. That is a legitimate reason and no one should talk you out of it. Just cost it honestly.
Which Fiji photographers should you look at instead?
Fiji has a deeper bench than most couples expect, spread across the main precincts. Ocean Studio Fiji, Lia and Stu Photography and Silvestre Weddings work out of Nadi and cover Denarau, the Mamanucas and the Coral Coast. Kirsten Satz Photography is based on the Coral Coast itself. Melonie Ryan works the Taveuni and Vanua Levu end, where flying someone in is most expensive. The full list sits in our Fiji wedding suppliers directory.
A local photographer also solves the accommodation problem at the Denarau and Coral Coast resorts entirely, and reduces it on the islands to a day-transfer cost.
What to settle before you book either way
Four things, in one email to the resort:
- Is there any external vendor fee, and what is it?
- Does the photographer need to be accommodated, and at what rate?
- Are there locations on the property that are off-limits, or times when the beach is shared with other weddings?
- Are drones permitted on the property? That is a separate question with its own answer — see drone footage at a Fiji wedding.
Get those four answers in writing before you pay a deposit to anyone.
The three questions people ask next
Can the resort's included photographer be swapped for a credit? Sometimes, and it is always worth asking. Package inclusions are usually costed internally, and a coordinator can often substitute.
Can you use a photographer for the ceremony and the resort's for the reception? Yes, and it is a sensible way to control cost on a long day. Confirm both are welcome on site.
Does any of this change for an elopement? It gets simpler. Most elopement packages either include basic coverage or explicitly allow you to arrange your own — see Fiji elopement packages compared.
