Exactly one room in Fiji publishes a single-space capacity above 1,000 delegates: the Denarau Island Convention Centre at Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, at 1,500 theatre-style, 1,000 banquet and 1,600 reception. Every other Fiji venue reaches 1,000 by splitting the plenary, going outdoors, or moving into a sports arena.

That is the finding, and it is more useful than a list of ten resorts that each top out at 600. Below is what the published numbers actually say, where they conflict, and how a 1,000-delegate programme gets built in practice.

Which Fiji venues publish capacity at or near 1,000?

Every figure below is from the venue's own website unless noted. Where a source conflicts with another, both are shown.

Where do the published numbers disagree?

Two places, and both matter enough to name.

Floor areas on the Sheraton venue page look wrong. Marriott lists the Denarau Island Convention Centre at 18,890.8 sqm and the Golden Ballroom at 6,458.4 sqm. Those areas are wildly out of proportion to the seated capacities shown beside them — 1,500 theatre in nearly 19,000 square metres would be one of the emptiest rooms in the Pacific — and they read as square-foot values mislabelled as square metres. We publish the capacities, which are internally consistent with each other and with the reported design brief, and we flag the areas as disputed rather than quietly repeating them. Ask the venue for a dimensioned floor plan.

Vodafone Arena's capacity has two figures. Wikipedia records 4,000; the MICE Fiji directory holds a 5,000 theatre entry carrying no verification. Neither is confirmed by a current Fiji Sports Council capacity statement we could retrieve, so both are published here with their sources and the conflict stated.

This is the normal condition of Fiji venue data, not an exception, which is why we publish the disagreements instead of picking the prettier number.

Does the Denarau Island Convention Centre actually work for 1,000?

It is the one venue built for it. The centre opened in May 2014, hosting the Fijian Tourism Expo as its inaugural event, and was reported at the time as designed to accommodate up to 1,500 delegates. It sits on the Sheraton Fiji site on Denarau Island.

The caveat is beds, not seats. Sheraton Fiji is listed at 297 rooms. A genuine 1,000-delegate residential conference therefore spans the Denarau precinct — the Westin, Radisson Blu, Hilton Fiji and the rest of the island — with delegates walking or shuttling a few hundred metres to plenary rather than driving a highway. That is a real advantage over a city convention centre, and it is the reason Denarau wins most large Fiji bids. Our guide to running one event across four hotels covers the contracting.

Note also that the Westin's own largest room is 200 theatre, with roughly 401 sqm of event space in total. The Westin is a bed block and a breakout venue for a Denarau event, not a plenary alternative — a distinction some proposals blur.

How do you reach 1,000 without the convention centre?

Three honest routes, in order of how often they work.

Split the plenary. Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay publishes three Event Centres at 448 theatre each. Whether they combine into one span is not stated on the property's public pages, so confirm it — but three rooms of 448 plus a live feed is a workable 1,000-delegate conference with a 448-seat main room, and it is a far better outcome than pretending a 600-seat ballroom holds 1,000.

Go outdoors for the big moments. Shangri-La Yanuca Island publishes 1,000 reception on its 1,305 sqm Rara, and Sheraton publishes 1,500 reception on the Pro-Shop Lawn and 700 on the 15th hole. For a gala dinner or awards night at 1,000, Fiji has several options — provided the wet-weather room exists and is sized honestly.

Use Suva's civic and arena venues for a single session. Vodafone Arena takes the volume for an AGM, expo or concert-format general session. It has no attached accommodation and was built for sport, so it is a one-session answer, not a conference venue.

The deductions nobody applies

A published theatre figure is a seating-plan maximum, not an operating capacity. Before you believe 1,000, deduct:

  • Stage, screens and wings. A main-stage set with LED and a presenter runway can remove 10 to 15 per cent of a room's seats.
  • Aisles and egress to the standard the venue is actually licensed to.
  • Camera, audio and lighting positions, plus a front-of-house mix position, if the session is streamed.
  • Accessible seating and the companion seats beside it.
  • Catering turn space if the same room flips to banquet.

Ask for the capacity with your set, in writing, from the venue and your AV supplier together. LED walls, projection and screens in Fiji covers what those sets physically need.

The verdict

If you need 1,000 delegates facing one stage in one room, in Fiji, the answer is the Denarau Island Convention Centre, and the conversation is about which Denarau hotels carry the room block. If you can split the plenary or put the big night outdoors, Shangri-La Yanuca Island and Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay come into play. If you only need one large general session and will bed delegates elsewhere, Vodafone Arena in Suva is worth a call.

For other sizes, we publish the same analysis at 500 delegates and down the scale. Which Fiji Venue Is Actually the Largest? resolves the competing claims, How Many Delegates Can Fiji Host? answers the country-level question, and the Fiji conference venues and capacity chart is the hub.
