Four Fiji venues can seat 500 or more delegates in a single room: the Denarau Island Convention Centre (1,500 or 1,700 theatre, depending which page you read), the Crown Convention Centre at Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay (900 or 1,450), InterContinental Fiji's pillar-less Watercourt ballroom (600), and Sofitel Fiji's Grand Ballroom (550 banquet). A further four reach 500 only by combining partitioned sections.

That distinction — one room versus several rooms with the walls pulled back — is the thing Fiji venue marketing obscures most consistently, and it is the thing a 500-delegate plenary actually depends on. This piece separates the two, publishes the conflicting figures where they conflict, and says which venues have the accommodation to match.

Which Fiji venues genuinely seat 500 in one room?

And the venues that reach 500 only by combining rooms:

VenueCombined capacityWhat it is actually made of
Golden Ballroom, Sheraton Fiji600 theatre / 400 banquet / 800 cocktailBallroom A Orchid (280 theatre) + B Frangipani (130) + C Gardenia (130)
Ratu Makutu Events Centre, Shangri-La Yanuca Island650 theatre / 500 banquet, 648m²Ratu Makutu I (300 theatre, 324m²) + Ratu Makutu II (300, 324m²)
Baravi Ballroom, Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay525 theatre / 440 banquetBaravi 1 (370 theatre, 332m²) + Baravi 2 (165 banquet)
Britannia Ballroom, Grand Pacific Hotel Suva600 theatre / 400 banquet / 550 cocktail, 600m²Britannia 1 + 2 + 3, each 140 theatre and 200m²

A combined room is not a failure — a 650-seat plenary at Shangri-La Yanuca Island with the partition retracted is a real 650-seat plenary. But it has a seam, usually a column line, often a ceiling-height change, and always an acoustic compromise. Ask to see it open, with chairs in, before you believe the number.

Where do the published figures conflict?

Everywhere. This is the honest heart of the matter, and we are publishing both figures with their sources rather than picking one.

  • Denarau Island Convention Centre: 1,500 vs 1,700 theatre. Both figures appear on Marriott's own website, on two different Sheraton Fiji pages — along with 1,000 vs 1,150 banquet and 1,600 vs 1,700 reception. Unresolved.
  • Crown Convention Centre: 900 vs 1,450 vs "1,000+". Crowne Plaza's own microsite says "up to 900 delegates" and "1,000+ guest events" on the same page; IHG's corporate site says 1,450 guests. Three figures, two official channels.
  • Crowne Plaza floor areas are internally incoherent. The same page attributes 493m² to both the Convention Centre and the Baravi Ballroom, against a stated property total of 1,540m² across seven venues. The capacity-chart PDF the page links to returns a 404.
  • Novotel Nadi: a 260m² largest room with "max seats 700". Accor's booking site says 700; Accor's own events site lists the largest single room as 152m² seating 150. The 700 figure is not physically possible in 260m².
  • Novotel Suva Lami Bay: largest room 480m² vs 1,248m², and six vs seven meeting rooms — both on Accor-owned channels. Neither figure should be used as a single-room capacity.
  • USP's Japan-Pacific ICT Centre: 307 vs 303 seats. Both on usp.ac.fj.
  • Shangri-La Yanuca Island claims "Fiji's largest MICE facility" while publishing a 650-theatre maximum — a claim contradicted by its own capacity table against both Denarau and the Crown Convention Centre.

If you are building a 500-delegate business case on any of these numbers, get the figure confirmed in writing by the venue, with a floor plan and a seating diagram at your exact configuration. We publish the conflicts because the alternative — quietly choosing the bigger number — is how planners end up 200 seats short.

Which big-capacity venues have matching accommodation?

A 500-seat room is useless if 500 delegates cannot sleep nearby. This is where the list shortens sharply.

VenueOn-site roomsThe accommodation position
Denarau Island Convention CentreSheraton Fiji 297Strong — Denarau is a single resort precinct, so Hilton Fiji, Radisson Blu and Club Wyndham are walking or shuttle distance. The Westin Denarau is currently closed
Crown Convention CentreCrowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay 324Good single-property base; overflow needs Nadi hotels 10–20 minutes away
InterContinental Fiji266Single property at Natadola; overflow is thin, the nearest alternatives are Yatule Resort & Spa and Fiji Marriott Momi Bay
Shangri-La Yanuca Island443The best single-property match in Fiji for a 500-delegate event — one resort, one island, 443 rooms
Grand Pacific Hotel SuvaNot publishedSuva has genuine hotel depth nearby: Holiday Inn Suva, Novotel Suva Lami Bay, Tanoa Plaza
Vodafone ArenaNoneSuva hotel stock only; no accommodation on site

Shangri-La Yanuca Island is the quiet answer for a 500-delegate event that wants one address. 443 rooms against a 650-theatre combined plenary is the tightest room-to-seat ratio in the country, even if the plenary has a seam down the middle.

Denarau is the answer for 800 and up, because the precinct, not the property, is the venue. See conference venues on Denarau Island and multi-property conferences.

Which venues cannot do 500, despite the marketing?

Worth stating, because several are routinely proposed for events this size. Largest published indoor single room:

PropertyLargest indoor roomTheatre
Warwick FijiTalanoa Hall, 510m²400 (500 cocktail)
Fiji Marriott Resort Momi BayGrand Salon Ballroom, 355m²400 (combined from three salons)

Tanoa Plaza HotelConference Room 3150
Radisson Blu DenarauBallroom, 180m²120
DoubleTree Resort by Hilton FijiConference Room, 127m²100

Two traps in that table. Hilton Fiji's widely quoted 1,500-banquet figure is Koro Lawn, which is outdoors — a 3,989m² lawn, and a fine gala venue, but not a plenary and not a wet-weather one. Several Fiji properties quote 500 to 2,000 capacities that are outdoor lawn or beach numbers. Always ask whether a capacity is indoors.

And note there is no purpose-built, standalone national convention centre in Fiji. The Denarau Island Convention Centre is marketed through Sheraton; the Crown Convention Centre is part of Crowne Plaza. Neither has an independent operator. See does Fiji have a convention centre? for the fuller answer.

The verdict

For 500 delegates in one genuinely pillar-free room with accommodation attached, there are two realistic answers: the Crown Convention Centre at Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay, 324 rooms on site and 10 minutes from Nadi airport; or the Denarau Island Convention Centre, with the whole Denarau precinct behind it.

For 500 at one address with the best room-to-delegate ratio, Shangri-La Yanuca Island at 443 rooms, accepting a combined plenary.

For 500 to 600 with a view, InterContinental Fiji's pillar-less Watercourt ballroom, with the caveat that it publishes no floor area and overflow accommodation at Natadola is limited.

For more than 1,500 in a single space, Fiji's only answer is Vodafone Arena in Suva, and you will be building a conference inside a sports venue with no rooms on site.

Whichever you shortlist, do three things: get the single-room capacity confirmed in writing at your configuration, ask for the banquet kitchen's plated covers per hour (see banquet kitchen capacity), and confirm the room-to-delegate maths before the room-to-seat maths.
