No. Fiji has no purpose-built national convention centre. Every room in the country that seats more than 500 delegates sits inside a hotel or a sports arena, and the two largest — the Denarau Island Convention Centre at Sheraton Fiji and the Crown Convention Centre at Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay — are hotel facilities carrying convention-centre names.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. A standalone convention bureau venue is contracted separately from accommodation, can host a trade exhibition alongside a plenary, and does not care which hotel your delegates sleep in. Fiji does not work that way. Here, the big room and the beds come from the same contract, and that shapes everything about how you plan.
So what does Fiji actually have instead?
Three categories, and they behave differently.
Hotel convention centres. Purpose-built conference buildings inside resort precincts, named as convention centres and sold as such. Two of these matter at scale.
Hotel ballrooms. Large divisible function rooms inside resorts, typically 300 to 650 theatre-style. Most of Fiji's conference business runs through these.
Public and institutional halls. Vodafone Arena in Suva, the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre theatre at the University of the South Pacific, and municipal halls. Big, cheap, and not built for delegates.
Which Fiji venues carry the name "convention centre"?
| Venue | Where | Published capacity | Source position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denarau Island Convention Centre, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort | Denarau Island | 1,755 m²; 1,500 theatre, 1,000 banquet, 1,600 cocktail | Marriott's own venues page. It also calls it "the largest fully air-conditioned convention center in Nadi" |
| Crown Convention Centre, Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa | Nadi Bay | Pillarless ballroom: 900 (resort's own page), 1,450 (IHG), 1,500 (trade press) | Sources conflict — see below |
| Ratu Makutu Events Centre, Shangri-La Yanuca Island | Coral Coast | 648 m²; 650 theatre, 500 banquet. Resort states "up to 1,000 guests" across its largest configuration | Resort's own event-spaces page |
| Watercourt Conference Centre, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa | Natadola | Pillar-less ballroom, 600 theatre; three 110-theatre meeting rooms | Resort's own meetings pages |
| Novotel Convention Centre, Novotel Suva Lami Bay | Suva | 480 m², 350 theatre (Accor Meetings & Events) — but Accor's own hotel page lists a largest space of 1,248 m² seating 800 | Unresolved conflict between two Accor pages |
Note the Crowne Plaza spread. The resort's own page says the pillarless ballroom seats "up to 900 delegates". IHG's corporate events listing gives 1,450. Trade coverage of the November 2025 opening reported 1,500 across a 925 m² ballroom. We have not been able to reconcile those, and we are not going to pick one. Ask for a floor plan with a seating layout attached before you build a budget on any of them.
The same caution applies to Novotel Suva Lami Bay, where two pages on Accor's own domain disagree by a factor of more than two on both area and capacity.
Is the Vodafone Arena a convention centre?
No, but it is the largest single room in Fiji, and it is genuinely used for conventions.
Fiji Sports Council publishes a seated capacity of 5,000 for the main arena — 4,000 on the grandstand and 1,000 on the floor — and separately describes the facility as handling "1-10,000 persons". It comprises the main arena with a sprung timber floor, Hall A, Hall B and an events lounge, plus kitchen and office space, and the council lists conventions, graduations and trade exhibitions among its uses.
What it does not have is accommodation, ballroom finishes, breakout rooms configured for delegates, or in-house conference catering at resort standard. For a national association AGM or a large public-facing event in Suva it works. For an international incentive or a corporate conference, it is a shell you would have to build inside.
Why does it matter that Fiji's big rooms sit inside hotels?
Four practical consequences.
- The room comes with a room-night commitment. Space is almost never contracted in isolation. Expect the ballroom rate to be tied to a block, and expect attrition clauses on the block. Our guide to cancellation, force majeure and attrition clauses covers what to negotiate.
- Your exhibition options are limited. None of these venues has a dedicated exhibition hall with dock-height loading. Trade displays go into pre-function space or a second ballroom.
- Multi-property is normal, not a fallback. A 500-delegate conference on Denarau routinely sleeps across several resorts and meets in one. See multi-property conferences.
- Rate leverage changes. You are negotiating with a hotel's revenue manager, not a venue operator filling dark dates. That is usually to your advantage in shoulder season and against you in July and August.
Has a national convention centre ever been proposed?
Yes, more than once, and neither proposal appears to have been built.
A Fiji National Provident Fund-linked development at Momi was reported in 2017 as including a 3,500-seat conference and exhibition centre, with completion targeted for December 2018. The Marriott resort that now occupies Momi Bay publishes a largest function room of 355 m² seating 300 for a banquet — nothing on that scale. An earlier 2015 report described a privately planned convention centre at Nausori. We have found no evidence either was completed, and no current government or Tourism Fiji announcement of a national convention centre.
The most recent significant addition to Fiji's conference stock is the Crown Convention Centre, which opened in November 2025 and was described in trade coverage as one of Fiji's largest purpose-built venues. It is still a hotel facility.
So can Fiji host a 1,000-delegate conference?
On the published numbers, yes — in one room, at either Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort or Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa, and close to it at Shangri-La Yanuca Island. Whether Fiji can accommodate 1,000 delegates at a single precinct without splitting across properties is a separate question, and the answer is usually no. That constraint is covered in Fiji venues that can hold 300 delegates and in which Fiji venue is actually the largest.
The verdict
Stop looking for a convention centre and start looking for a precinct. Fiji's answer to a convention centre is Denarau Island — one large ballroom, several thousand rooms within a few minutes of each other, and a single ground-transport plan. Nadi Bay is now a credible second. Suva is the option when your delegates are domestic and regional rather than flying in for the beach.
Next step
Work from the capacity chart rather than venue marketing, then read Fiji for business events: what it can and cannot do for the honest limits, and conference venues in Nadi for the precinct detail. The full picture sits in the business events planner's guide. Other venues worth a place on a large-format shortlist: InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa and Grand Pacific Hotel Suva.
