Australians need no visa for Fiji, receive a visitor permit on arrival valid for up to four months, and a marriage solemnised in Fiji is automatically recognised in Australia without being registered there — in fact, it cannot be registered there. The Fijian certificate is your only proof. And you will almost certainly need a Certificate of No Impediment before you go.
Guideline only. Marriage, immigration and fee rules change, and the Fijian government's own pages do not always agree with each other. Confirm your position with the Fiji Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (justice.gov.fj), Fiji Immigration and the Australian Passport Office, which issues the Certificate of No Impediment. Is a Fiji wedding legally recognised in Australia?
Yes, in almost every case — and there is nothing you need to do in Australia to make it so. Four Australian government sources say the same thing.
Smartraveller puts it plainly: "You can't register an overseas marriage in Australia. But in most cases, your marriage is legally recognised here." The Attorney-General's Department states that overseas marriages "cannot be: performed by an Australian-authorised marriage celebrant, registered in Australia". The NSW Registry is blunter still: "Overseas marriages cannot be registered in Australia and you cannot be issued an Australian marriage certificate if you have been married overseas."
Recognition rests on two tests. The marriage must have been valid under the law of the country where it happened, and it must be one that would have been valid had it happened in Australia. Australia does not recognise an overseas marriage where either party was already married, was under age, was too closely related, or was forced.
So your Fijian marriage certificate is the document. Keep it, and consider ordering a certified copy while you are still in Fiji.
The one practical trap worth knowing: the Attorney-General's Department notes that "some states and territories don't accept overseas marriage certificates if you want to change your name." If a name change is in the plan, check with your own state's registry before you leave, because the fix is much easier in Suva than it is from Sydney.
What do Australians need to enter Fiji?
Australia is on Fiji's visa-exempt list, so no visa is required in advance. A visitor permit is issued on arrival, and Fiji Immigration states the period "may vary from several days up to a maximum of four months".
Four things to have ready:
- A passport valid more than six months beyond your travel, per Fiji Immigration's stated requirement
- A confirmed return ticket. Fiji Immigration is specific that this means a confirmed ticket "to confirm date of departure to country of residence, not booking/reservation" — stricter wording than Smartraveller's, and the stricter one is the one at the counter
- Proof of booked accommodation
- Proof of funds sufficient to sustain you during the stay
Smartraveller also notes that a previous criminal record may result in refused entry. Passport renewal is the item that catches people: the Australian Passport Office publishes routine service at "up to 6 weeks", a Fast Track service at "up to 14 business days" for the standard fee plus $107, and Priority at "up to 11 business days" for the standard fee plus $308. If a member of the wedding party needs a renewal, six weeks is the number to plan around.
What documents do you need for the marriage licence?
Fiji's Ministry of Justice requires notice of "21 consecutive days" before a marriage, which is waivable by Special Licence for "foreign visitors who are in the county for a short period" — the route almost every Australian couple takes.
For the Notice of Intention to Marry or a Special Licence, the published document list includes:
- Passports of both parties with valid visa
- Certified birth certificates for foreigners
- A Single Status Certificate from country of origin and country of residence
- Recent passport-size photographs of both parties
- Valid photo ID
- Divorce papers or a death certificate, if applicable
- Two witnesses with valid photo ID
Booking 21 days in advance is required for a court or religious marriage. Our full document checklist is at every document you need for a Fiji marriage licence.
How does an Australian get a Certificate of No Impediment?
This is the single item most likely to derail an Australian couple's timeline, because the agency that issues it is not the one you would guess.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirms that "staff within Australian Passport Offices in capital cities are authorised to provide services such as: issuing of Certificates of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI)". So you apply at a passport office, not at a births, deaths and marriages registry. The form comes from Smartraveller, and it must be signed in person before a consular officer rather than electronically. If you are divorced or widowed, bring the divorce or death certificate.
Two caveats DFAT publishes that matter here. First: "DFAT can issue a CNI in Australia. But some local authorities only accept CNIs issued in their country." Second, DFAT advises checking with the destination's authorities whether the CNI also needs an authentication or apostille.
And here is the honest gap. Fiji's Ministry of Justice asks for a single status certificate "from country of origin & Country of Residence", but neither Fijian nor Australian government pages we could read state whether Fiji accepts a CNI issued by an Australian passport office in Australia, or requires one issued by the Australian High Commission in Suva. The High Commission's own notarial page does not mention CNIs at all. DFAT publishes no fee amount for a CNI either — only that "we charge fees for our service".
We are not going to guess at that. Email the Fiji BDM Registry and the Australian High Commission in Suva, ask both, and get the answer in writing before you book flights around a date. Australian consular posts elsewhere publish CNI issue within two working days of lodgement, so the document itself is fast once you know which one Fiji wants.
Which Australian cities fly non-stop to Nadi?
Seven, and one notable absence. Frequencies below come from airport operators and Qantas; the departure counts come from the live Nadi departures board on 28 September 2026.
| From | Non-stop? | Airlines published | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Yes | Fiji Airways, Virgin Australia, Qantas | Four Nadi–Sydney departures on the board we checked. Qantas flies the route on its own aircraft |
| Melbourne | Yes | Fiji Airways, Virgin Australia | Two departures on the board we checked |
| Brisbane | Yes | Fiji Airways, Virgin Australia | Three departures on the board we checked |
| Gold Coast | Yes | Fiji Airways | Three weekly, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, on a Boeing 737 MAX 8; route launched 11 June 2026 |
| Canberra | Yes | Fiji Airways | Three weekly from 1 October, Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Canberra Airport publishes that Fiji Airways "will continue to operate services from Canberra until 5 February 2027" — check before planning around it |
| Adelaide | Yes | Fiji Airways | In the published Qantas codeshare network to Nadi; frequency not published on a primary source |
| Cairns | Yes | Fiji Airways | In the published Qantas codeshare network to Nadi |
| Perth | No non-stop | — | Absent from the published codeshare network and from schedule databases. Perth guests connect, usually through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane |
On flight times, we could not read the airlines' own schedule pages, and the schedule aggregators we checked contain demonstrable errors — one gives Cairns and Adelaide the same duration despite Cairns being far closer. Those same databases indicate roughly three and three-quarter hours from Brisbane, four and a quarter from Sydney and five from Melbourne. Treat those as indicative and confirm at booking. Getting guests to Fiji has the wider picture.
One genuinely useful consequence of that table: a Brisbane or Gold Coast wedding party is roughly three and three-quarter hours from the aisle. That is shorter than Brisbane to Perth. It is the strongest single argument for Fiji over Bali or Thailand for a Queensland family.
What does it all cost in Australian dollars?
Conversions use the Reserve Bank of Fiji indicative rate published on 28 September 2026: FJD 1 = AUD 0.6330. The RBF states its rates are "for indicative purposes only and do not necessarily reflect the rates at which the licensed commercial banks and foreign exchange dealers are willing to deal with customers". Your card will do slightly worse.
| Item | Published FJD | Approx AUD |
|---|---|---|
| Notice of Intention to Marry | FJ$15 ex-VAT / FJ$16.35 inc | A$9.50 / A$10.35 |
| Marriage at the Registry | FJ$50 ex-VAT / FJ$54.50 inc | A$32 / A$34.50 |
| Special licence application (2019 notice) | FJ$54.50 | A$34.50 |
| Solemnisation outside office hours | FJ$109.00 | A$69 |
| Decorated marriage certificate | FJ$54.50 | A$34.50 |
| Certified copy of marriage entry | FJ$16.35 | A$10.35 |
| Mana Island Resort chapel package | FJ$3,490 | A$2,209 |
| Musket Cove "Musket Moments" | FJ$3,299 | A$2,088 |
| VOMO Island "Paradise Wedding" | FJ$5,483 | A$3,471 |
| Outrigger Fiji "Dream Wedding" | published in AUD | A$7,500 |
Be aware the licence fee itself is genuinely disputed across Fijian government sources. The Ministry of Justice marriage page lists FJ$15 and FJ$50 marked VAT-exclusive; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes FJ$16.35 and FJ$54.50, which are the same figures with VAT added; the Ministry of Justice's 2019 BDM fee notice publishes a FJ$54.50 special licence and FJ$109.00 for solemnisation outside office hours. Separately, Plantation Island Resort's own 2025 document tells couples the "Marriage License application fee payable directly to BDM Office" is FJ$57.50. These are small sums and the conflict does not change anyone's budget — but it tells you to take the registry's word on the day, not a brochure's.
One useful note on Outrigger: it publishes its Dream Wedding in AUD alongside FJD, NZD and USD, with additional guests at A$120 per person and a minimum of 30 and maximum of 100 guests. That is unusually transparent for this market. Our full breakdown sits at what a Fiji wedding actually costs.
On deposits, three Fiji resorts publish real terms. Mana requires "30% of non-refundable deposit… within 14 days of the reservation confirmation", Musket Cove "a 25% non-refundable deposit… upon booking", and VOMO a "Deposit of 50% due within 30 days of confirmation of wedding date". Almost nobody publishes a cancellation scale and not one Fiji resort publishes a date-transfer clause — which is exactly the clause an Australian couple watching a cyclone forecast will want. Deposits and cancellation terms has the detail.
When should Australian guests be told?
Earlier than you think, and for a reason specific to Australia.
Fiji's busiest months are July and August — the Fiji Bureau of Statistics recorded 105,791 visitors in July 2026, "the highest monthly visitor arrivals ever recorded", and 99,963 in August. Those months collide precisely with the NSW, Victorian and Queensland winter school holidays, which in 2027 run from late June into mid-July. If your guest list has school-age children, you are competing with every other Australian family for the same seats and the same rooms.
The awkward part is that guests cannot book flights as early as you would like. Jetstar publishes fares "approximately 10 months in advance" and Air New Zealand allows group bookings "up to 11 months in advance". So a save-the-date fourteen months out is not asking guests to book; it is asking them to hold the dates, renew passports and be ready to book the day the schedule opens. Our 14-month rule sets out the sequence.
And if you are choosing between June and January, know that Fiji's cyclone season runs November to April, with the Fiji Meteorological Service publishing an average of around two cyclones affecting Fiji per season. That is not a reason to avoid those months — it is a reason to insure and to read the force majeure clause.
The verdict
For an Australian couple, Fiji is about as low-friction as a destination wedding gets. No visa. A four-month permit on arrival. Automatic recognition at home with no Australian paperwork afterwards. Non-stop flights from seven cities, and under four hours from Brisbane.
The two things that will actually cost you time are the Certificate of No Impediment — issued by Australian passport offices, with an unresolved question about whether Fiji wants one issued in Australia or in Suva, so ask early — and the school-holiday collision in July and August, which is a booking-window problem rather than a planning one.
Everything else is a fortnight's admin and a four-hour flight.
