Getting guests to Fiji is easier than almost any other destination-wedding country in the region: ten Australian and New Zealand cities have non-stop services to Nadi, and the longest of them is under five and a half hours. The complications are not in the air. They are in the fare type, the group booking mechanics, and the boat that leaves without you.
Which cities have non-stop flights to Fiji?
Everything arrives at Nadi (NAN). There is no non-stop service to Suva from Australia or New Zealand — the Fiji Airways Suva–Sydney route ended in late 2022, and guests bound for Suva, Pacific Harbour or the Coral Coast still fly into Nadi and connect or drive.
| From | Airlines with non-stop service | Approximate flying time |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand | About 3 hours (Air New Zealand's own figure) |
| Wellington | Fiji Airways | ~3h 50m |
| Christchurch | Fiji Airways | ~4h 05m |
| Brisbane | Fiji Airways, Virgin Australia | ~3h 35m |
| Sydney | Fiji Airways, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar | ~3h 55m–4h 15m |
| Melbourne | Fiji Airways, Virgin Australia, Jetstar | ~4h 20m–5h |
| Canberra | Fiji Airways | ~4h 20m |
| Adelaide | Fiji Airways | ~5h 20m |
| Cairns | Fiji Airways | Not reliably published |
| Gold Coast | Fiji Airways (service launched June 2026) | Not reliably published |
Only Air New Zealand publishes its own flying time. The rest of the durations above come from third-party schedule data and should be treated as indicative — check the booking engine for your date. We have left Cairns and the Gold Coast blank rather than print a figure we could not stand behind.
Two things worth telling guests explicitly. Air New Zealand flies non-stop to Fiji from Auckland only — its Christchurch and Wellington services ended in 2022, so South Island guests either connect through Auckland or take Fiji Airways direct. And a "Qantas" Sydney–Nadi booking may be Qantas metal or a Qantas-coded Fiji Airways aircraft, because both exist on the same route. If seat selection or status recognition matters to a particular guest, have them check the operating carrier before they pay.
Should guests book individually or as a group?
Both airlines that publish group terms set the threshold at 10 or more passengers travelling together. That is a low bar for a wedding, and the benefit is not usually price — it is that you can hold seats before anyone has committed.
Air New Zealand publishes the most usable terms. Groups of 10+ can secure a booking up to 11 months in advance with a deposit, and members can be swapped later. Note a genuine inconsistency on their own site: the Australian page says you can swap group members as late as 48 hours before the flight, while the New Zealand page sets at least 48 hours for domestic and short-haul but at least five days for international. Auckland–Nadi is international, so plan on the five-day rule and confirm it with the group desk.
Qantas sets the same 10-passenger minimum and publishes one useful clause: if your group size changes by less than 20 per cent after you have paid a deposit, excess deposit is applied to the final payment. Actual deposit amounts and payment deadlines are not published publicly — you get them from the group desk.
Fiji Airways operates a group desk for 10 or more passengers on the same flight. Its published deposit terms, name-change deadlines and payment deadlines were not retrievable when this article was written, and we are not going to guess at them. Email the group desk and get them in writing before you promise your guest list anything.
No airline publishes a wedding-specific or destination-wedding fare product for Fiji. Weddings go through the standard group channel.
The fare trap that will actually cost your guests money
Fiji Airways sells unbundled economy fares under four names: Lite, Value, Comfort and Plus. The cheapest advertised fare, Lite, carries no checked baggage at all.
Fiji Airways raised its international economy checked allowance from 23kg to 30kg for tickets bought on or after 5 March 2020, which is generous — but that applies to fares that include a bag in the first place. A guest who books the headline price and then discovers they cannot check a suit bag will pay at the airport, at airport rates.
Put one line in your guest information: book Value or higher if you are checking a bag. It is the single highest-value sentence you can send them. (The fare-family baggage breakdown above is from a third-party source; the airline's own table was not reachable, so have guests confirm on the fare rules at booking.)
When is the worst time to ask guests to fly?
Virgin Australia's own destination guide sets it out plainly: peak season "runs through the middle of the dry season, particularly from June to September, with another surge in demand over Christmas and New Year", with July and August the busiest and prices at their peak, especially in school-holiday periods. April–May and October–November are shoulder; January–March is low.
The collision to know about: the New South Wales and New Zealand July school breaks sit squarely inside Fiji's peak. NSW's 2027 winter break runs 5–16 July; New Zealand's 2026 mid-year break ran 4–19 July. A July wedding competes with both markets' family travel at once, which is the worst combination for group fares and resort room blocks simultaneously.
If your guest list is price-sensitive, the shoulder months buy you materially cheaper flights and better availability for the same weather risk profile. Dry season vs wet season for a Fiji wedding has the honest weather trade.
What happens after they land?
This is where Fiji weddings actually go wrong, and it has nothing to do with airlines.
If the wedding is on the mainland — Denarau, Nadi, the Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour, Natadola — arrival time barely matters. Ground transfers run around the clock. Tourist Transport Fiji and Airport Shuttle Fiji operate 24 hours from the terminal, and operators such as Epic Transfer & Tours Fiji, Xplore Fiji and TEWAKA Fiji handle group coaches.
If the wedding is in the Mamanucas, the catamaran from Port Denarau runs three times daily, with the last departure at 15:15 and check-in 30 minutes before. Guests need to be through immigration and at the marina by 14:45. An afternoon arrival does not make it.
If the wedding is in the Yasawas, there is one departure a day. The Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau at 08:45 with an 08:15 check-in, and returns at 18:00. Yasawa Adventures Fiji, which operates it, states in its own FAQs that unless guests have a very early morning arrival, they should arrive the day before and overnight on the mainland.
That is the sentence to put on your wedding website. A Yasawa wedding is functionally a guests-arrive-a-day-early wedding, and if you do not tell people that, some of them will book a 14:00 arrival and spend an unplanned night in Nadi.
For late or missed connections, water taxis and helicopters exist — SeaFiji, Mamanuca Express and Rare Fiji Adventures run private boats around the clock from Denarau — but they are a recovery plan, not a budget line you want your guests discovering on the day.
The guest-information email, in five lines
- Fly to Nadi (NAN). Not Suva. Even if the wedding is in Suva.
- Book Value fare or higher if you are checking a bag.
- Arrive by [date], not [wedding date] — and if the venue is in the Yasawas, that means the day before, no exceptions.
- Tell us your flight number by [date] so we can book the transfer.
- Here is the group booking reference if you want to be held with everyone else.
