Guests pay for their own flights to a destination wedding, and usually their own accommodation too. The couple hosts the wedding itself — ceremony, reception, food and drink — plus anything they have specifically invited guests to, such as a welcome dinner. That convention holds in Fiji as everywhere else, unless the couple says otherwise in writing.

Who pays for what?

Emily Post puts "transportation to and from the wedding" and "lodging expenses and meals" on the guest's side. The Knot agrees: guests pay "their own airfare to and from the destination". An ocean does not move that line; it enlarges the number.

What do the Fiji flights actually cost?

Fares move constantly. This is a dated snapshot, not a quote, as published on 24 September 2026.

RouteNon-stop carriersFare snapshot, 24 Sep 2026
Auckland–Nadi (3h 15m)Fiji Airways, Air NZNZD 490 return (Fiji Airways); "from $351" one way (Air NZ)
Wellington–NadiFiji AirwaysNZD 587 return
Christchurch–NadiFiji AirwaysNZD 584 return
Sydney–Nadi (4h 15m)Fiji Airways, Qantas, Virgin, JetstarAUD 525 best return (Skyscanner AU)
Los Angeles–Nadi (11h 25m)Fiji Airways, dailyNone we could verify

Both airlines label these as fares recently found, not fares on sale. Quote guests a range, never a price. Fiji Airways also reaches seven Australian cities, San Francisco, Honolulu and Vancouver, adding Gold Coast from June 2026; four carriers compete on Sydney–Nadi, so Australians can shop hardest.

Baggage matters. Fiji Airways lifted international Economy checked baggage from 23kg to 30kg for tickets bought on or after 5 March 2020. Rivals do not match it, so guests on a low-cost fare may pay for bags yours do not.

Are group bookings worth it?

Fiji Airways runs a group desk, its booking page headed for ten or more passengers. We could not verify deposits or name-change deadlines, so assume nothing: put a group quote and a same-day public fare side by side. Rosie Holidays will run both.

What about the bridal party?

The guidance conflicts. Emily Post says attendants "arrange and pay for their own transportation" and buy their attire, but that "wedding hosts should provide the accommodations". The Knot says the wedding party pays for "travel and accommodations" both.

Most couples land between them: attendants buy flights, the couple covers hair and makeup and often subsidises the room. Say which when you ask them, not after they book.

Should you cover a parent's or a child's fare?

No rule exists, but a test does: is this person's attendance a direct consequence of your marrying overseas? If so, part-paying is hosting, not charity. The Knot lists travel for elderly relatives and guests who could not otherwise attend among costs couples absorb. Decide and offer privately.

The three questions couples ask next

Do we pay for rooms in our block? No. A block is a negotiated rate held for guests, not a bill you have taken on. Check for an attrition clause — unsold rooms can become your problem.

What if someone cannot afford it? Say it first, before they have to. "We know this is a big ask and we will love you either way" takes the shame out of a no.

Do we still receive gifts? Etiquette does not trade a gift against an airfare, but many guests treat the trip as the gift — and many couples say so on their website.

What should the invitation say?

Send save-the-dates earlier than at home — The Knot advises going beyond the usual eight to twelve months for international travel — and point everyone to a wedding website. On it: dates, resort, an indicative flight range with the date you checked it, block rates, and one plain line that guests book and pay their own travel and rooms. Entry rules are a guideline only; confirm them with Fiji Immigration.

The honest part

A destination wedding self-selects its guest list, and the airfare does the selecting. Some people you love will not come. That is arithmetic, not bad wording.

Your next step

Give guests numbers, not adjectives: the guest cost sheet you can forward and a guest FAQ for your website do that job. For route detail see flights from Australia and New Zealand; for what lands on you, 9 hidden costs of a Fiji wedding.

Then book one group coach from Nadi airport — Tourist Transport Fiji, Go Local Fiji or Airport Shuttle Fiji, compared in our transport directory. It is the cheapest kindness in the budget. Still choosing a resort? Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort holds large blocks. The rest sits in the Fiji wedding guide.
