Most Fiji post-conference extensions fail for one reason: the boat gets back at 6pm and the flight left at 3pm. Fiji's islands are reached on fixed timetables that do not flex for your programme, and the gap between the last return sailing and an international departure is the single constraint that decides what is actually possible.

Here is how to sequence extensions against the timetables that exist.

What is the one rule that governs every Fiji island extension?

The return boat lands late in the day, so a same-day island return only works against a late-evening international departure.

The Yasawa Flyer departs Port Denarau at 8.45am and returns "by around 6.00pm each evening", per the operator. Octopus Resort, which sits mid-chain on Waya, encodes the consequence precisely on its own transfer page:

"If your flight into Fiji arrives after 6 am or departs Fiji before 9.30pm you will need to book the Resort Boat or Heli option." "If your flight arrives after 8 am or departs before 3.30pm you will need to take either the Heli or overnight in Nadi."

Read that twice. A departure before 9.30pm already pushes you off the scheduled ferry. A departure before 3.30pm rules out the helicopter too, and you are overnighting in Nadi whether you planned to or not.

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort makes the same point more bluntly, annotating its afternoon resort-boat departure "(Good for flights departing after 8pm)".

Design rule: build a Nadi or Denarau night between any island extension and an international departure. It costs one room night and removes the entire failure mode.

What are the published sailing times?

A conflict worth knowing: Blue Lagoon Beach Resort publishes the departure as 8.30am while the operator and Octopus both say 8.45am. Two sources including the operator support 8.45am. Check in early regardless.

Note the shape of that day. The far north of the Yasawas is roughly four hours each way. A day trip to the top of the chain is eight hours on a boat for perhaps three hours ashore. It is not a delegate experience. The Yasawas are a two-night minimum, and honestly a three-night destination.

The operator formerly trading as Awesome Adventures Fiji now presents as Yasawa Adventures Fiji — confirm the trading name when you contract. Detailed timetables are published only as flipbooks and are not readable programmatically, so per-island times must be confirmed with the operator. A fuel surcharge of FJ$30 adult per one-way sector applied from 1 April 2026.

Mamanuca Islands — South Sea Cruises

Published departures from Port Denarau are typically 9.30am, 12.15pm and 3.15pm, but journey time varies enormously by island and by sailing, because the morning services call at multiple islands and the afternoon service runs direct.

Malolo Island Resort publishes it clearly: the 9.30am and 12.15pm take about two hours via other islands; the 3.15pm takes 55 minutes direct. Tropica Island publishes 1.5 hours on the morning sailings and 45 minutes direct on the 3.15pm.

Matamanoa publishes different times again — a 12.00pm departure arriving 1.15pm, returning 1.15pm to arrive Denarau at 3.00pm, plus a premium 9.45am service. This may be a separate product. Do not publish or plan against a single South Sea Cruises timetable. Get the times for your specific island.

The Mamanucas are the realistic day-trip and one-night extension zone. Under an hour direct, multiple daily sailings, and several islands with genuine group capability.

Private and charter boats

Where the schedule does not fit the programme, private transfer solves it. SeaFiji operates a private fast-boat service 24/7 from Port Denarau, with scheduled seat-in-boat departures around 5.30pm and inter-island connections in daylight hours only. Published one-way seat rates via resorts run about FJ$256 per person, with private speedboat charter from around FJ$1,219 for up to four.

Mamanuca Express publishes survey capacities vessel by vessel — Maxi up to 35 passengers, Assault II and III up to 16 each, Assault I and Gemini 1 up to 12, Classic 1 and 2 up to 8 — which makes it one of the few operators you can size a group against before you call. Manu Charters publishes charter rates from Denarau Marina for up to nine people: FJ$2,400 for a full-day tour, FJ$1,800 half day, FJ$850 sunset cruise, inclusive of taxes.

How do domestic flights change the picture?

They open the outer islands, and they are the only sensible way to reach Taveuni, Savusavu or Kadavu on a short extension.

Fiji Link, the Fiji Airways domestic subsidiary, operates a fleet reported at one ATR 42-600, five ATR 72-600 and four DHC-6 Twin Otters, from hubs at Nadi and Nausori. Northern Air, a separate operator, publishes routes to Suva, Taveuni, Savusavu, Labasa, Levuka, Moala and Nadi, and also offers medevac — worth knowing if you are sending delegates somewhere remote.

Reported frequencies put Nadi–Savusavu at around four daily and roughly 70 minutes, Nadi–Taveuni at two daily and about 85 minutes, Nadi–Labasa daily at 45 minutes, Nadi–Kadavu four weekly, and Rotuma at one weekly from each hub.

An honest caveat: we could not reach fijiairways.com to verify these directly. The frequencies and the widely cited 7 kg carry-on and 15 kg checked baggage limits come from third-party guides, not the airline. Confirm both with Fiji Airways before you publish an itinerary to delegates — the baggage limit in particular will catch out anyone connecting off a long-haul flight with a full international allowance.

Levuka on Ovalau is served by Northern Air from Suva, reportedly five weekly and a ten-minute flight.

What works as an extension, and how long does it need?

What land-based extensions are available?

These sequence far more easily because they do not depend on a boat.

Sigatoka River Safari runs a jetboat and village experience of approximately 4.5 hours, with return mini-coach transfers included from most hotels in the Coral Coast, Natadola, Denarau and Nadi areas. Published rates on the operator's booking engine are FJD 329 ex-Coral Coast and FJD 349 ex-Nadi, Denarau, Natadola, Sonaisali and Momi, at 270 minutes. Transfers can add 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so budget a full day.

Off Road Fiji publishes a cave safari at approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, or 6 to 8 hours including transfers from Nadi, Denarau or the Coral Coast, with a village visit, kava ceremony and Fijian barbecue lunch included.

Ecotrax Fiji runs three-hour e-bike tours on the old cane railway, roughly 12 km each way. Two constraints matter for groups: it operates Monday to Saturday only, closing Sundays out of respect for the villages the route passes through, and the operator states "No agent bookings accepted" — which is a genuine problem if your DMC is packaging the programme. Published rates are FJD 239 adult, transfers not included. Note the operator's own FAQ says three hours while Tourism Fiji says two; use the operator's figure.

Talanoa Treks offers the most structured multi-day option, but with hard limits: scheduled trips run May to November only, in small groups of approximately five to eight hikers, with exclusive-use trips available for six to twelve. The Highland Escape is three days and two nights at FJD 1,450 per person, with pickup from Nadi, Suva or the Rakiraki area. Day two is an 11 km hike and the operator says plainly that "some of the walking is hard" — brief your delegates honestly.

Flavours of Fiji Cooking School publishes a 4.5-hour cooking class and market tour at FJD 180 per adult, or a three-hour class at FJD 155, Monday to Saturday. Maximum class size is not published anywhere we could find, which is the key unknown for a conference group — ask before you promise it to fifty people.

Beqa Adventure Divers publishes a two-tank Fiji Shark Dive at FJ$500 on rates effective 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, plus a mandatory FJ$25 per day Shark Reef Marine Reserve levy and FJ$20 per day fuel surcharge, with group discounts of 5% at three or more days and 10% at five or more.

Two things that changed recently

Captain Cook Cruises Fiji no longer operates MV Reef Endeavour. The 130-passenger ship that carried most three, four and seven-night Yasawa cruise programmes was replaced from November 2023 by MS Caledonian Sky, a 114-passenger expedition vessel running 3 to 14 night itineraries at a materially higher price point. Day products — the Island & Reef Day Sail and Sunset Dinner Sail from Denarau Marina — continue. Any extension proposal quoting the old Reef Endeavour product is out of date.

Blue Lagoon Cruises publishes three itineraries aboard MV Yasawa Princess II, which has 22 cabins: Explorer 3 night from USD 1,669 per person, Wanderer 4 night from USD 2,369, Escape to Paradise 7 night from USD 3,645. Departure days and passenger capacity are not published.

The decision aid

Choose by the time you actually have, not by the brochure.

  • One spare day — Mamanucas by direct afternoon sailing, or a land tour from the Coral Coast or Nadi. Nothing in the Yasawas.
  • Two spare nights — Mamanucas or Coral Coast comfortably; Yasawas at a stretch.
  • Three or more — the Yasawas properly, or a domestic flight to Savusavu or Taveuni.

Then, whatever you choose, put a Nadi or Denarau night between the extension and the flight home. Every operator's published guidance points to the same conclusion, and the one room night is cheaper than a missed international departure for forty delegates.

For the transfer mechanics behind all of this, see moving delegates around Fiji and domestic and inter-island flights in Fiji. Island options by region are listed under the Mamanucas.
