In Fiji the night before should be a welcome dinner, not a rehearsal dinner — informal, early, and open to everyone who has flown in. Guests arrive jet-lagged across a whole day of flights and ferries, and the function that works is the one they can walk into late, in shorts, without a seating plan.
The formal rehearsal dinner is a northern-hemisphere convention. In a destination wedding where the entire guest list is already travelling together, it solves a problem you do not have.
What is the difference, and which do you want?
| Welcome dinner | Rehearsal dinner | |
|---|---|---|
| Who comes | Everyone who has travelled | Wedding party, immediate family, officiant |
| Tone | Informal, standing and sitting, people drift | Seated, speeches, structured |
| Timing | Early evening, generous window | Fixed sitting |
| Why it works in Fiji | Absorbs staggered arrivals; introduces two families who have never met | Rehearses a ceremony most Fiji resorts will walk you through in 20 minutes anyway |
| Cost per head | Lower — canapés, barbecue, buffet | Higher — plated service |
Most Fiji resort coordinators will run the ceremony walk-through on the morning of the wedding or in the hour before. If you want a rehearsal, ask for that and keep the dinner social.
Choose the rehearsal dinner only if your wedding party has a genuinely complex processional, or if the formality matters to a parent and that matters to you. Otherwise the welcome dinner is the better night.
When should it be, and what has to work around it?
The timing problem in Fiji is arrivals, and it is sharper than at home.
Flights land across the day. Trans-Pacific services arrive into Nadi at various hours, and Fiji Airways international check-in opens three hours before departure and closes one hour before — which tells you something about how long the airport day is at both ends. Guests coming off an overnight sector will be functional for about four hours.
Ferries run to a timetable, not to you. If your wedding is IN the Mamanucas, the catamaran transfers from Port Denarau Marina leave at set times — to Castaway Island, departures at 9.30am, 12.15pm and 3.15pm, on a crossing of about 90 minutes. A guest landing at 2pm is not on the island before dinner.
Island-and-mainland splits are the real trap. Plantation Island Resort's own wedding material illustrates the cost of the last ferry: a photographer shooting past 3.30pm has to stay overnight, at FJ$350 per person including dinner and breakfast, because they would miss the last boat. The same logic applies to any guest you invite over for the evening.
So: hold it on the island if the wedding is on the island. Hold it in Nadi or ON Denarau Island if guests arrive the night before and transfer the next morning. Do not split it.
Start at 6pm. Finish the formal part by 8.30. Let the bar run on.
Where should you hold it?
Three formats, in order of how often they turn out to be right.
1. A relaxed function at your own resort. The lowest-friction option, and usually the cheapest once transfers are counted. A beach barbecue, a poolside buffet or a lovo works far better than a plated dinner — and a lovo on the first night rather than the wedding night gives it room to be explained properly. See a lovo feast at your wedding.
On the islands, resorts like Castaway Island Resort have beachfront dining with real capacity — its Restaurant 1808 seats up to 100 — plus beach dinner set-ups and a thatched cabana that converts between uses.
2. A restaurant buyout or private area. Best where guests are spread across several hotels on the mainland, because a restaurant is neutral ground. ON Denarau Island, the directory lists Cardo's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar, Bonefish Seafood Restaurant, Indigo Indian Asian Restaurant & Bar and Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant. In Suva, Paradiso Restaurant & Bar and Daikoku Suva take groups — Daikoku's listed group capacity is 42.
Ask three questions before you book: is there a minimum spend, is the area genuinely private or just a corner, and can the kitchen handle your dietary list in one sitting.
3. A sunset cruise or offsite experience. Expensive per head and weather-dependent, but it solves the awkward-introductions problem better than anything else, because nobody has to make conversation while sitting still. Operators in the directory include Captain Cook Cruises Fiji, Cruisin Fiji and Coral Cats Sailing.
What does it cost, and where does it blow out?
Nobody publishes welcome-dinner pricing as a product, so the honest guide is the per-head cost of adding a guest to a resort wedding reception — which is the same kitchen doing the same job.
Plantation Island Resort publishes additional-adult rates on its wedding packages at FJ$132, FJ$247 and FJ$347 depending on the package tier, with children under 12 dining free on the three main packages. That is the shape: a buffet or barbecue tier, a three-course tier, and a premium tier, roughly doubling at each step.
Four things push it up unexpectedly.
- The bar. Beverage is priced per person per hour in tiers, and three hours is standard. Plantation's entry package includes a FJ$1,000 bar credit rather than a package — a credit runs out, a package does not. Know which you have. Beverage packages at Fiji weddings, decoded covers the detail.
- Taxes. Expect 12.5% VAT and the 5% Tourism Services Tax introduced on 1 September 2026, plus any service charge. Ask for them itemised.
- Transfers. A mainland restaurant for 40 island-based guests is two boat movements and a coach. Price it before you fall in love with the restaurant.
- Scope creep. A welcome dinner with florals, a band, a cake and a seating plan is a second wedding. If you want those things, have one wedding.
Three decisions that make the night work
- Invite everyone. A destination wedding guest has spent four figures to be there. Excluding them from the only other function reads badly, and the cost difference at buffet tier is small.
- Say what to wear, on the invitation. "Island casual — no need to change" prevents forty people arriving overdressed and uncomfortable.
- Do the speeches here, not at the wedding. Fiji evenings are warm and long. Moving the family speeches to the welcome dinner shortens the wedding reception and lets people say the awkward affectionate things while everyone is still fresh. It is the single best structural change you can make.
Next step
Price the catering properly in Fiji wedding catering: what's possible and what it costs, and if the mainland restaurant route appeals, our list of offsite reception dinners and restaurants that take wedding groups goes deeper on which venues handle numbers.
For caterers working outside resort grounds, the directory lists Chefs Catering Fiji, Vasaqa Fiji and Mauri Catering and Events; for entertainment that suits an informal first night, VOU Fiji and GetUp Band. Check the dietary brief against dietary requirements at a Fiji wedding, and see more venues on the Denarau city guide and the Fiji wedding catering hub.
