Bleisure is the easiest win in a Fiji conference budget, because it costs the organiser almost nothing and the delegate pays for it. The work is all in the contract: shoulder-night rates, whether extension nights count toward your room-block pickup, the airfare deviation deadline, and where your duty of care stops. Get those four right before you advertise anything.

Fiji is unusually well suited to it. The leisure product is not a separate trip — it is a ferry ride from the conference hotel.

Why does Fiji convert so well?

Most destinations ask a delegate to take another flight to reach the holiday. Fiji does not. A conference on Denarau sits a short boat ride from the Mamanucas; a conference on the Coral Coast sits on a beach already. The marginal effort of extending is a taxi to Port Denarau and a catamaran, which is a very different decision from booking a connecting flight.

That changes the shape of your offer. You are not selling a holiday, you are removing friction from one the delegate already half wants.

What do you have to negotiate before you can offer it?

Four clauses, and they belong in the original hotel contract rather than in a side conversation later.

ClauseWhat to ask forWhy it matters
Shoulder-night rateThe group rate, available a set number of nights pre and post, subject to availabilityWithout it, delegates pay the public rate and most will not bother
Pickup treatmentShoulder nights counting toward block pickupReduces your attrition exposure at no cost to the hotel
Booking channelA dedicated booking link or code delegates use themselvesKeeps extensions off your master account
Folio splitCompany master account for conference nights and inclusions; delegate's own card for everything elseStops you receiving a bill for someone's minibar in November

The pickup point is the one most organisers miss. If forty delegates each add two nights and none of them counts toward your contracted pickup, you have delivered the hotel eighty room-nights of revenue and received no credit for it. Ask. See how room blocks work in Fiji and rate negotiation and contracting with Fiji hotels for how these conversations usually go.

How does the airfare work?

If you have blocked flights, an extension is a deviation from the group booking, and deviations carry a fee and a deadline. Fiji Airways operates its group bookings channel for groups of ten or more and does not publish deviation terms on its public page, so you will need them from the group desk in writing.

The practical sequence:

  1. Get the deviation fee and cut-off date when you get the group quote.
  2. Publish the extension options before that cut-off.
  3. Put the cut-off date in the registration form, in bold.
  4. After the cut-off, tell delegates plainly that they are buying their own return ticket.

This is the single most common way bleisure quietly fails: the options are published three weeks before departure, by which time the group ticket is issued and nobody can move.

What should the extension options actually be?

Resist open-ended. Three packaged choices convert far better than an invitation to improvise, and they are easier for your DMC to price.

OptionShapeWho it suits
Add two nights where you areSame hotel, group rate, no transferDelegates with a Monday meeting at home; low-effort extenders
Island hop, 2-3 nightsCatamaran from Port Denarau to a Mamanuca resortCouples, first-time visitors, the biggest segment
Dive, surf or adventure, 3-4 nightsPacific Harbour, the Coral Coast or a Yasawa propertyA smaller but committed group who will pay more

For the island-hop option, the obvious targets sit within reach of Port Denarau — Plantation Island Resort, Mana Island Resort & Spa, Castaway Island Resort at the family and mid-market end, and Likuliku Lagoon Resort at the top. On the Coral Coast, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort works as a stay-put extension for a conference already in that precinct. Ferry and water-taxi operators in our directory include Mamanuca Express and SeaFiji.

If the appetite is for a day rather than nights, Malamala Beach Club states it is about 30 minutes from Port Denarau and can accommodate corporate functions of up to 350 — which makes a post-conference island day a credible whole-group option rather than an individual one.

How do you price it?

Three rules that keep this clean:

  • Publish a per-person price including the transfer. A room rate without the ferry is not a price a delegate can decide on.
  • State the currency and the date. Fiji quotes in FJD. At Reserve Bank of Fiji indicative rates of 14 October 2026, FJD 1 = NZD 0.7878 and AUD 0.6333; if you publish converted prices, publish the date you converted them.
  • Price the shoulder nights at the group rate and say so. "Conference rate, extended" is a far better offer than a number with no reference point.

Have your DMC package and price all three options as part of the original brief, not as an afterthought. Rosie Holidays and the other partners in our DMC and PCO directory do this routinely, and it costs you nothing to have it quoted alongside the core programme.

Where does company responsibility stop?

This is the part that gets handled badly. Once a delegate is on personal time, the position on travel insurance, medical cover, incident response and employer liability may change — and it depends on your own policies, your insurer and the law where you employ people.

So: decide in advance, write it in the delegate pack in plain words, and confirm it with your insurer before you publish. The sentence delegates need is something like company travel insurance covers you for the conference dates listed; for any additional nights you are responsible for your own travel insurance and medical cover.

Guideline only — confirm your position with your own insurer and legal advisers. Last reviewed 15 October 2026. Our duty of care for delegates in Fiji guide covers the conference-period obligations in more detail.

What does good look like?

A delegate pack that, at registration, offers three priced extension options with transfers included, a booking link at the group rate, a named deviation deadline for the flight, and one clear sentence about insurance. That is it. Four elements, all of them settled months earlier in the hotel and airline contracts.

Done well, a meaningful share of your group extends, the host property gets more revenue than it contracted for, your attrition risk drops, and your delegates go home having had a holiday that your organisation did not pay for. There is not much else in event management with that ratio.

Your next step

Read partner and accompanying person programmes, which solves the related problem of what the people travelling with your delegates do, then build the activity side from pre- and post-conference tours in Fiji and half-day activity options near each conference precinct. The rest of this cluster sits on the Fiji delegate experience hub.
