Five nights is the first Fiji incentive length where a two-centre programme makes sense: two or three nights on the mainland, then a move to an island. That move is what the fifth night buys, and it is also the single biggest cost and risk in the programme. Roughly FJ$1,000 to FJ$1,400 per head of the content can be quoted from published rates; the rooms, the gala and the boats cannot.

This is the five-night build for 60 to 80 people. If you have three or four nights, our 3-night and 4-night programmes are the right shapes — both keep the group in one place, which at those lengths is correct. Five nights is where you stop defending a single base.

Why does the fifth night change the programme?

Because a one-centre five-night incentive starts to feel like a long stay rather than a reward. People finish the island day, the activity day and the gala by night four, and the fifth becomes filler.

The alternative is a deliberate move. Two or three nights in the Nadi–Denarau area, where the arrivals are easy and the day trips are dense, then a transfer to somewhere genuinely remote for the back half. The change of scene resets the programme, the second arrival becomes its own set-piece, and the final dinner happens somewhere people have never been.

The cost of that is one full day consumed by the move, and a sharp drop in your ability to price anything.

What are the two shapes, and which should you pick?

Shape A: 3 + 2Shape B: 2 + 3
Nights3 mainland (Denarau or Coral Coast), 2 island2 mainland, 3 island
Best forGroups with a working session, an awards night needing real AV, or spread arrivalsPure reward programmes with no content
Gala locationMainland, night 3 — full ballroom, full productionIsland, night 4 — beach, limited production
Transfer dayDay 3Day 2
RiskLower. The island leg is short enough that weather disruption costs you one dayHigher. Three island nights means three days of boat dependency
Cost certaintyBetter. More of the programme sits where published rates existWorse

Choose Shape A unless the brief is explicitly "no meetings, no speeches." An awards presentation delivered on a mainland ballroom stage with real AV is better than the same presentation shouted over wind on a beach — and the AV capability sits on the mainland.

The programme, day by day

Day 0 — Arrive, transfer, welcome on property. Nadi International to Denarau is published at 20 minutes by Tourism Fiji, Hilton and the Asian Development Bank's delegate guide, and at 30 minutes by Sheraton Fiji's own page. Use 30 for a coach group with luggage. Keep night one on property and low-key: people have flown 3h15 from Auckland or 4h15 from Sydney and the real programme starts tomorrow.

Day 1 — The island day. The most reliably costed element in Fiji, and the photograph the programme is remembered by.

Day 2 — The split day. Two or three parallel options — an adventure track, a cultural track, a spa track — and let people choose. This is where 70 people stop behaving like a block of 70.

Day 3 — Morning free, transfer to the island, gala on the mainland the night before (Shape A) — or transfer in the morning and gala on the island on Day 4 (Shape B). Either way, the transfer is the day. Do not schedule anything either side of it.

Day 4 — The island day that is not an excursion. No coach, no departure time. Diving, snorkelling, a village visit, a long lunch. This is the day the fifth night exists for.

Day 5 — Depart. Island to Nadi, then a wait. Build in day rooms; the last boat and the last flight rarely align.

On a 70-person programme, a costable spine looks like this: one island day at FJ$215–285, one activity day around FJ$239, one cultural dinner at FJD 151, a firewalking show at FJ$30, park entry, and the inter-island transfer at FJ$152–256 each way. That is roughly FJ$1,000 to FJ$1,400 per person of programme with a source attached — before rooms, the gala and the coaches.

At the Reserve Bank of Fiji's indicative rates of 23 September 2026, FJ$1,200 is about NZ$936 or A$754.

What is quote-only, and what it means for the island leg

Rooms, the gala dinner, coaches and the complimentary-room ratio are quote-only across the whole Fiji market — see our 4-night programme for the property-by-property position. On a five-night two-centre programme, two of those get worse.

Island rooms. Likuliku Lagoon Resort has 45 bures and is adults-only 17+. Tokoriki Island Resort has 36 units. Matamanoa Island Resort has 47. A 70-person group in twin share needs 35 rooms — which at any of those properties is most of the resort. You are not booking a block; you are negotiating a near-buyout, and the price behaves accordingly. Plantation Island Resort and Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina are the two Mamanuca properties with enough scale to take a group of this size without a buyout conversation.

Boats. Every movement on the island leg is a charter or a scheduled sailing with a capacity limit. Mamanuca Express and SeaFiji run the water transfers; none publishes a group charter rate. Get boat capacity, luggage allowance and the last-sailing time in writing before you commit to a property, because the last boat is what breaks programmes.

The three things that go wrong on the transfer day

  1. Luggage. Island boats have real luggage limits, and 70 people with checked bags is a lot of hold space. Ask for the number of bags per sailing, not a reassurance.
  2. The weather margin. A cancelled sailing on a one-day transfer costs you a night of a five-night programme. Hold a contingency plan that does not require the group to be on the island — usually a mainland day plus a later sailing, not a cancelled leg.
  3. Power and connectivity on the island. Mainland and Denarau resorts run on the grid. Island resorts frequently do not: one Yasawa booking operator states island properties supply "electricity from sunset to midnight and generally for the first part of the morning," with times varying by property, and warns generator voltage "might not be as strong." If your awards night needs LED and sound, or if anyone in the group uses a medical device, confirm continuous power in writing. See power reliability and generator backup.

What tax will land on the invoice?

The 2026 position, briefly. VAT is 12.5%, reduced from 15% effective 1 August 2025. A Tourism Services Tax of 5% commenced 1 September 2026 for operators above F$2 million annual gross turnover. Whether the two stack is genuinely ambiguous in the Bill's own wording, so ask each supplier whether its quote is VAT-inclusive, TST-inclusive, both or neither.

One planning point worth acting on: bookings made before 1 September 2026 are not subject to TST even where the service is delivered afterwards. If any of your 2027 programme was contracted in August 2026, that portion escapes it. The full cost comparison sets out the detail.

Guideline only. Confirm current tax treatment with the Fiji Revenue & Customs Service and your own adviser.

What should the five nights feel like?

Arrive, big day, choice day, move, reward day, depart. Two places, one move, no filler.

The thing most five-night Fiji programmes get wrong is treating the second centre as a bonus rather than the point. If the island leg is two rushed nights with the group still in coach-transfer mode, you have spent the money and bought a longer version of the four-night programme. Give the island leg one whole day with nothing scheduled, and it becomes the part people talk about.

The verdict

Build Shape A — three nights mainland, two nights island — unless the brief bans working sessions. Cost the island day, the activity, the cultural dinner and the inter-island transfer from published rates and put the sources in your budget notes. Then treat rooms, the gala, the coaches, the boat charter and the complimentary-room ratio as five negotiated lines, and get all five in writing before you quote a per-head figure to anyone.

And protect the transfer day. It is the difference between a five-night programme and a four-night programme with an expensive extra sleep.

Read designing a Fiji incentive that people actually want to win before you fix the itinerary, and CSR and legacy activities for incentive groups if the programme needs a give-back day. Build the ground plan with building a transport plan for a Fiji conference. Then shortlist: Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort or Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa for the mainland leg, Plantation Island Resort or Tokoriki Island Resort for the island leg, Malamala Beach Club for the island day, Ecotrax Fiji and Captain Cook Cruises Fiji for content, and Tourist Transport Fiji and SeaFiji for the moving parts.
