A Fiji wedding costs less than one at home for a single structural reason: almost every line item scales with guest count, and distance cuts the guest count. Four categories fall sharply. Five rise. Here is the honest ledger, including the costs nobody mentions in the brochure, and the point at which the saving disappears.
What is the actual mechanism?
Not cheap labour. Not a weak currency. Guest count.
The average Australian wedding cost A$38,252 in 2026, per Easy Weddings' 11th Annual Australian Wedding Industry Report. That figure is overwhelmingly a function of how many people are fed, seated, poured for and transported.
Move the wedding to Fiji and the list thins itself. Nobody is offended, nobody is cut, and the people who come are the people who would have flown. A 110-guest wedding becomes a 28-guest wedding without a single awkward conversation — and 28 guests is a different budget, not a discounted one.
Everything else in this article is downstream of that.
Which line items fall?
| Line item | Why it falls in Fiji | Scale of the fall |
|---|---|---|
| Catering and beverage | Priced per head; two-thirds fewer heads | Largest single saving |
| Venue and furniture | Smaller space, less seating, fewer tables; many resorts fold ceremony setup into a package | Large |
| Styling, florals, stationery, cake | All volume-driven; eight centrepieces instead of twelve tables | Moderate to large |
| Transport and accommodation for guests | You are no longer paying for shuttles, or contributing to guest travel | Moderate |
| Legal fees | Fiji's Ministry of Justice publishes a Notice of Intention to Marry at $15 and a court marriage inside the registry at $50 | Near-total |
The venue effect is bigger than it looks, because Fiji resorts bundle. Published packages at Royal Davui Island Resort run FJ$5,220 for its Elope package and FJ$9,395 for the full Davui Fiji Wedding Package. Beqa Lagoon Resort publishes US$850 for Hibiscus, US$1,200 for Frangipani and US$1,600 for Orchid. Wakaya publishes US$5,000 plus 12.5% tax for its Ultimate Wedding Package. Toberua Island Resort publishes from NZ$2,195 for Sweet & Simple up to NZ$8,995 for Totally Toberua.
At Reserve Bank of Fiji indicative rates of 2 October 2026 — FJ$1 = NZ$0.7867 = A$0.6364 = US$0.4412 — Royal Davui's full package is about NZ$7,390 or A$5,978, and Beqa Lagoon's Orchid about NZ$2,853 or A$2,308. Re-check the rate before you commit; it moves.
Against A$38,252, those are not marginal differences. But they are also not the whole bill.
Which costs go up?
This is the part the comparison articles skip.
1. Your own travel and accommodation. You are buying a week in Fiji, not an afternoon at a reception centre — and usually a better room than you would choose on an ordinary holiday, because it is in the photographs. Budget it as a wedding cost, because it is one.
2. Minimum night stays. Resorts protect their inventory. Toberua requires all ten adults on its Totally Toberua package to stay a minimum of five nights. Leleuvia Island Resort will give you the whole island midweek in April, May, September or October for 50 overnight guests with a two-night minimum — generous, and still a floor you must meet.
3. Transfers. On the mainland this is a line item. In the islands it is a budget category. Royal Davui publishes FJ$550 per person each way for the Nadi flight plus speedboat, or from FJ$1,780 per person each way by helicopter with a two-passenger minimum. Kokomo Private Island publishes shared air transfers at US$825 per adult one way (US$1,650 return), with private charters from US$5,000 by helicopter or US$7,500 by seaplane. Matava publishes FJ$150 each way per booking for the Kadavu airport boat on stays under five nights.
Multiply the per-person figures by your guest count before you celebrate the package price. On an outer island, transfers can exceed the wedding package itself.
4. The second celebration. Most couples who marry abroad host something at home for the people who could not come. If that something is a party for ninety, you have not replaced the expensive wedding — you have added a cheap one to it.
5. The admin tail. Longer timelines, more guest communication, and real paperwork afterwards. If you are Australian, an overseas marriage does not let you take your spouse's name automatically — Victoria's registry states plainly that "if you married overseas, you can't take your spouse's family name automatically. You need to apply to change your name." The sequence is in Name Changes After a Fiji Wedding.
Where is the break-even?
There is no single number, but the shape is consistent.
- Under about 20 guests at home: Fiji is usually more expensive in total, because the guest-count saving has nothing to work on while your own travel costs stay fixed. You are buying an experience, not a discount — which is a fine reason, just not a financial one.
- Between 20 and 60 guests at home: roughly a wash. Similar total outlay, seven days instead of six hours.
- Over about 60 guests at home: Fiji usually wins, and the margin widens with every guest you would have invited.
- Over 100 guests at home, and you also host a second party: the saving narrows again. Count it properly.
How do you protect the saving once you have it?
Three disciplines, in order of impact.
Do not let the guest list creep back. Every guest you add restores a slice of the cost you came to Fiji to avoid. Thirty is a different event from fifty.
Choose the island for the transfer, not the photograph. Denarau and the Coral Coast are road transfers; the Mamanucas are a short boat; the outer islands are a flight plus a boat, or a helicopter. The venue cost difference between those is often smaller than the transfer cost difference. Fiji Wedding Cost by Island sets the comparison out.
Read what the package excludes, not what it includes. A package that covers celebrant, licence lodgement, flowers and cake may not cover the reception dinner, beverage, photography or transfers. What's Actually Included in a 'Free' Resort Wedding Package is the detail, and 9 Hidden Costs of a Fiji Wedding is the rest of it.
The verdict
A Fiji wedding is cheaper than a wedding at home when it is a smaller wedding than you would have had at home. If you keep the guest list, you keep the cost — you have simply moved it somewhere warmer and added flights.
Which is still, for a lot of couples, the right trade. Just make it with the real number in front of you.
