Two people cannot marry alone in Fiji. Every marriage requires two witnesses with photo identification, and most resorts will supply them if you have none. Beyond that, an elopement is legally identical to a 200-guest wedding: same licence, same documents, same celebrant rules. What changes is the cost, the timeline and the amount of your attention the day consumes.
What counts as an elopement in Fiji?
Three different things get called the same word, and they have very different requirements.
| Type | Legally a marriage? | Licence needed | Witnesses | Typical guests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elopement | Yes | Yes | Two, 21+ | 0–2 |
| Micro-wedding | Yes | Yes | Two, 21+ | 8–30 |
| Vow renewal | No | No | Not legally required | 0–30 |
| Commitment or blessing ceremony | No | No | Not legally required | Any |
The third row is the one that surprises people. A vow renewal is not a legal act, so there is no licence, no Notice of Intention, no single status certificate and no registry visit. You can renew your vows on a beach in Fiji next Tuesday with nothing but a booking. That is why renewals are Fiji's easiest ceremony to arrange and its fastest-growing segment.
Note on witness age: sources conflict. Fiji's Embassy in Washington DC and the industry guide Bula Bride both state witnesses must be 21 and over; Fiji Pocket Guide states 18 and over. Plan on 21.
What does eloping in Fiji actually require?
Exactly what a full wedding requires, because Fijian law does not scale requirements to guest count.
- The licence. Either the standard route — a Notice of Intention posted for 21 consecutive days — or the Special Licence to Marry, which the Ministry of Justice offers for circumstances including foreign visitors in the country briefly. Eloping couples use the Special Licence.
- The documents. Passports with valid permits, certified birth certificates, single status certificates or certificates of no legal impediment, and divorce or death certificates where relevant.
- A Fijian celebrant. Only a Fijian celebrant may solemnise the marriage and sign the certificate. An overseas officiant can share the vows by arrangement but cannot be the officiant of record.
- Two witnesses. If you are travelling as a couple, ask the resort in advance rather than assuming. Most will provide them.
- 28 days. The licence, once issued, is valid for 28 days and the marriage must happen inside that window.

How much does an elopement cost?
Less, and the reason is structural rather than negotiable: the ceremony block of a Fiji wedding budget is close to fixed, while the reception block scales with headcount. Remove the reception and you remove most of the budget.
Four Fiji properties publish prices, and two of them are directly relevant here.
| Property | Package | Published price | ≈ NZD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tropica Island Resort | Rediscover Love (vow renewal) | FJ$1,899 | ~1,471 |
| Tropica Island Resort | Escape to Paradise (wedding) | FJ$2,999 | ~2,323 |
| Daku Resort | Wedding Package | from US$530 | ~907 |
| Mango Bay Resort | Mango Delight | FJ$3,200 | ~2,478 |
Conversions at the mid-market rate on 9 September 2026: FJ$1 = NZ$0.7745 = A$0.6284 = US$0.4525.
The FJ$1,100 gap between Tropica's wedding and renewal packages is a useful signal of what the legal machinery — licence, registry transfer, celebrant of record — is worth on its own.
Daku Resort also publishes its add-ons individually, which is exactly what an eloping couple wants: a warrior escort at US$85, serenaders at US$75, a village choir at US$145, an entertainment group at US$165, a DJ at US$240, Fijian attire hire at US$195 and extra cake tiers at US$30 each. You can build a ceremony line by line rather than buying a package with elements you do not want.
Statutory fees remain trivial either way. Published figures conflict between FJ$15 and FJ$16.35 for the Notice of Intention and FJ$50 and FJ$54.50 for the registry marriage. Budget the higher figures. See what a Fiji wedding actually costs.
How short can the timeline be?
Much shorter than a full wedding, but not zero.
| Stage | Elopement | Vow renewal |
|---|---|---|
| Single status certificate from home | Start 3+ months out | Not required |
| Special Licence application | Weeks before travel | Not required |
| Arrival before ceremony | Minimum three working days | Day before is enough |
| Registry visit | Yes, on a weekday | None |
| Celebrant booking | Yes | An officiant, not a registered celebrant |
The three-working-day floor exists because registries open roughly 8:30am to 3:00pm on weekdays only. A Saturday elopement needs the registry visit completed by Friday, and a delayed flight should not be what stands between you and a wedding.
For a vow renewal, none of that applies. Arrive, rest, renew.
Where should a small ceremony happen?
Small groups unlock options that a 100-guest wedding cannot touch.
Buy out something small. At two to thirty people, whole-property exclusivity moves from fantasy to arithmetic. Leleuvia Island Resort publishes the clearest structure in the country: the entire island with 50 guests, mid-week, in April, May, September or October, on a two-night minimum. Tropica Island Resort states a 60-person maximum on a full resort charter.
Go further out than you would with a crowd. The transfer cost that makes the Yasawas or the north expensive for eighty people is trivial for four. Turtle Island Fiji, Yasawa Island Resort, Navutu Stars Fiji, Matangi Private Island Resort and The Remote Resort all suit a party of two in a way they do not suit a party of eighty.
Or stay close and spend the saving on the stay. Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Tokoriki Island Resort, Matamanoa Island Resort, Vomo Island Fiji and Royal Davui Island Resort are short transfers from Nadi with adult-oriented settings.
If someone in the party cannot travel far, stay on Viti Levu. Nanuku Resort, The Pearl Resort, Crusoe's Retreat and Yatule Resort & Spa are all road-accessible.

What is a vow renewal actually for?
Three occasions dominate, and they have different tones.
Milestone anniversaries. Ten, twenty, twenty-five, fifty years. Often with adult children and grandchildren present, which makes it a family trip with a ceremony in it rather than a wedding.
Marriages that were interrupted. Couples who married in a registry office during a pandemic, an illness or a visa deadline, and never had the day. This is the largest group, and it deserves more care than the phrase "renewal" suggests — for many couples it is the wedding they did not get.
Couples who married legally at home and want the ceremony abroad. Legally simplest of all: do the paperwork in your own country, then hold a full ceremony in Fiji with no Fijian licence at all. It removes the registry visit, the single status certificate and the 28-day window in a single decision, and it is worth serious consideration if the documents are proving difficult.
What do small ceremonies get wrong?
- Assuming two people can marry alone. You need two witnesses. Ask the resort in writing.
- Booking a vow renewal but wanting a legal marriage. They are different products. Say which you want in the first email.
- Arriving the day before. Registries close at weekends and the licence process is not instant.
- Treating a renewal as lesser. For a couple who never had a wedding, it is the wedding. Brief the photographer and the resort accordingly.
- Under-briefing the photographer. With no guests to fill frames, the images carry the entire day. Fiji wedding photography and film has the briefing template.
- Skipping the traditional elements to save money. A warrior escort and serenaders cost less than most couples assume — Daku's published prices show it — and they are what makes the images unmistakably Fijian. Book, name and credit the performers properly; Fijian wedding traditions, done properly explains the etiquette.
The verdict
- Eloping: legally identical to a full wedding. Use the Special Licence, arrive three working days early, confirm witnesses.
- Renewing vows: no licence, no documents, no registry. The easiest ceremony to arrange in Fiji.
- Married at home, celebrating in Fiji: the cleanest route if the paperwork is difficult.
- Anywhere is on the table. Small numbers make the outer islands affordable and buyouts realistic.
Next step: decide which of the four ceremony types you actually want, because it determines whether you need a single document.
