The structural constraint on any Fiji honeymoon itinerary is the Yasawa Flyer: one departure from Port Denarau at 8.45am each morning, back around 6.00pm. Everything else — how many islands you can reasonably see, where the rest days go, whether seven nights is enough — follows from that single sailing. Here are three itineraries built around it.
Why does one ferry departure decide your whole itinerary?
Because it means one island move per day, maximum — and that move eats the day. South Sea Cruises' Yasawa Flyer departs Port Denarau at 8.45am daily and returns around 6.00pm, with its first stop at South Sea Island in the Mamanucas and its northernmost at Blue Lagoon in the Yasawas. The operator does not publish per-resort journey durations on its transfer page, so confirm your specific leg with reservations; what is certain is that there is one boat and one window.
The practical rule that falls out of this: every island change costs you a day. Two islands in seven nights means two travel days out of seven. Three islands means three. That is why the itineraries below move less than most people expect.
A seaplane or helicopter transfer buys the day back, at a cost that can exceed a night's accommodation. Whether that trade is worth it is the single biggest budget decision in the trip — see Fiji honeymoon costs, itemised.
Seven nights: two bases, one move
The mistake at seven nights is trying to see Fiji. You cannot. Pick two places and do them properly.
| Nights | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nadi or Denarau | Arrival. Most long-haul flights land late or leave you useless on day one. |
| 4 | One Mamanuca island | Close enough that the ferry leg is short. Malolo Island Resort, Matamanoa Island Resort, Tokoriki Island Resort, Lomani Island Resort & Spa |
| 2 | Coral Coast or back to Denarau | Restaurants, a day trip, somewhere to decompress before the flight |
Why this works. One ferry leg each way, four uninterrupted island nights, and you are not spending the last night on an island worrying about making the boat to your flight.
The variant worth considering: skip the island entirely and spend all seven on the Coral Coast — Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, InterContinental Fiji, Shangri-La Yanuca Island — with day trips out to the islands. It costs less, you eat in more places, and for a first visit to Fiji it is frequently the better trip. It is not the overwater-bure fantasy, but it is seven nights of holiday rather than five plus two travel days.
Ten nights: the Yasawas become viable
Ten is the first length at which the Yasawas make sense, because you can absorb the longer boat day without losing a third of the trip.
| Nights | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nadi or Denarau | Arrival night |
| 3 | Mamanucas | Short ferry; ease into island time |
| 4 | Yasawas | Yasawa Island Resort, Navutu Stars Fiji, Paradise Cove Resort, Turtle Island Fiji, Blue Lagoon Beach Resort |
| 2 | Denarau or Coral Coast | Buffer before the flight home |
The rest day is not optional. Build the day you arrive in the Yasawas as a nothing day — no diving, no booked excursion, no dinner reservation. You will have been on a boat since before 9am. Pretending otherwise is how people arrive at a beautiful resort too tired to enjoy the first evening.
Honest note on the Yasawas: the transfer is long, the resorts are smaller and more remote, the food is whatever the resort serves, and the phone signal is unreliable. All of that is the point. If any of it reads as a problem rather than a feature, stay in the Mamanucas and spend the difference on a better room.
Fourteen nights: three regions, properly
At fourteen nights you can add a genuinely different Fiji rather than a third beach.
| Nights | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nadi | Arrival |
| 4 | Coral Coast | Warwick Fiji, Outrigger, InterContinental. Restaurants, culture, Sigatoka |
| 4 | Mamanucas or Yasawas | The island stretch |
| 4 | Taveuni or Savusavu | Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji, Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa, Taveuni Palms Resort, Matangi Private Island Resort |
| 1 | Nadi | Departure buffer |
The northern leg is a domestic flight, not a boat, which is what makes it feasible — see domestic and inter-island flights in Fiji. Taveuni and Vanua Levu are greener, wetter, far less developed and have Fiji's best diving. The contrast with the dry west is the whole reason to go.
Keep the final Nadi night. Missing an international flight because a domestic leg was weather-delayed is a real risk in Fiji, not a theoretical one.
What should go in every itinerary regardless of length?
- An arrival buffer night near Nadi. Transfers to islands run in the morning.
- A departure buffer night near Nadi. Same reason, in reverse, with higher stakes.
- One nothing day after every long transfer. Non-negotiable in the Yasawas.
- One meal off-resort if you are anywhere on the mainland. See the best restaurants in Fiji.
- One thing that is not a beach. Sigatoka River Safari, Talanoa Treks Fiji, Ecotrax Fiji or a dive with Subsurface Fiji. The trips people remember are not the ones spent entirely on a lounger.
Verdict
Seven nights: two bases, one move, and consider staying on the mainland entirely. Ten nights: Mamanucas then Yasawas, with a rest day built in. Fourteen nights: add Taveuni or Savusavu by air and keep the Nadi buffer at both ends.
The common error across all three is moving too often. Fiji rewards staying put — the transfers are slow by design, the resorts are the experience, and a honeymoon spent on boats is a honeymoon spent on boats.
