Fiji is the easiest destination wedding a New Zealand couple can run. Auckland has around 31 direct flights a week to Nadi on two airlines at roughly three hours fifteen; Wellington and Christchurch have their own direct services; a marriage validly performed in Fiji is generally recognised in New Zealand; and the Fiji dollar currently works in your favour.
This is the New Zealand-specific version of our complete Fiji wedding guide — flights, legal position at home, money and guest logistics from a Kiwi starting point.
How do guests get from New Zealand to Fiji?
All three main South Pacific gateways have direct service to Nadi.
| From | Airlines | Direct flights per week | Days | Flight time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland (AKL) | Fiji Airways and Air New Zealand | ~31 combined | Daily, multiple services | ~3 h 15 min (2 h 50–3 h 15) |
| Wellington (WLG) | Fiji Airways (FJ460) | 3 | Mon, Wed, Fri | ~3 h 50 min |
| Christchurch (CHC) | Fiji Airways | 4 | Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun | ~4 h 5 min |
Schedules as published at 29 September 2026; frequencies shift seasonally, so confirm before you fix a date.
What this means for your date. Auckland guests can fly almost any day. Wellington and Christchurch guests are on a Monday–Wednesday–Friday rhythm, with Christchurch adding Sunday. If a meaningful part of your guest list is from the South Island or the capital, a Saturday wedding forces them into a longer stay or an Auckland connection. A Thursday or Friday ceremony with guests arriving Wednesday is often cheaper and easier for everyone.
Pick your date against the flight days before you ask a venue to hold it. It is the single most useful thing on this page.
Is a Fiji marriage legally recognised in New Zealand?
Generally, yes. The New Zealand Government's position is that most overseas marriages are valid in New Zealand, and the Citizens Advice Bureau puts it as: if your marriage is legally recognised in the country where it took place, it is generally recognised in New Zealand, as long as it complies with New Zealand law.
Three practical points that follow from that:
- Your marriage is registered in Fiji, not New Zealand. NZ Births, Deaths and Marriages does not register overseas marriages. Your Fiji marriage certificate is your proof.
- You usually do not need to do anything in New Zealand beforehand. Requirements are set by Fiji, not by home.
- If Fiji asks for a Certificate of No Impediment, NZ BDM issues one (form BDM 189) and it takes three to five weeks. Start that early — it is the item most likely to run late.
The Fiji-side paperwork — licence, documents, residency and timing — is set out in how to get legally married in Fiji and every document you need for a Fiji marriage licence.
Guideline only. Recognition of an overseas marriage depends on your individual circumstances — confirm with New Zealand Births, Deaths and Marriages and, where anything is unusual, a New Zealand lawyer. Last reviewed 29 September 2026.
What about changing your name at home?
This is where couples get caught. A foreign marriage certificate is proof that you are married; it is not always accepted as proof of a name change by every New Zealand agency and institution. Before you assume the certificate does everything, check directly with NZ BDM and with your bank and passport office. Allow time for it, and do not book a honeymoon flight in a new surname until the passport is in that surname.
How does the Fiji dollar change your budget?
At 29 September 2026 the mid-market rate was 1 NZD = FJ$1.27 — so FJ$100 costs roughly NZ$79 at mid-market, and more like NZ$82–83 once your bank takes its margin.
| Fiji quote | At NZ$1 = FJ$1.27 | Allow, after bank margin |
|---|---|---|
| FJ$5,000 | NZ$3,937 | ~NZ$4,100 |
| FJ$15,000 | NZ$11,811 | ~NZ$12,300 |
| FJ$30,000 | NZ$23,622 | ~NZ$24,600 |
Those are indicative conversions at a rate taken on a single day. Treat them as a sense of scale, not a budget.
The rate is also a risk you carry for the length of your engagement, because Fiji venues quote in FJD and you will pay deposits over 12 to 18 months. A 5% move against you on a FJ$30,000 wedding is about NZ$1,200. We work through holding, hedging and deposit timing in paying for a Fiji wedding.
One current item to check: Fiji's Tourism Services Tax of 5% commenced on 1 September 2026 for tourism businesses above a F$2 million turnover threshold, with bookings made before that date exempt. If you contracted your venue earlier in 2026, confirm in writing that your booking sits outside it.
What will your guests actually spend?
Be honest with them early, because the number decides your guest list more than your invitations do.
A New Zealand guest attending a Fiji wedding is committing to return airfares, four to seven nights' accommodation, transfers, meals outside the wedding, and usually a gift. From Auckland the airfare is the most competitive of the three cities; from Christchurch it is both longer and typically dearer, and the flight-day pattern often adds a night.
Two things that genuinely reduce guest cost:
- A shoulder-season date. See shoulder-season value.
- A mainland venue rather than an outer island. A Coral Coast or Denarau property removes a boat transfer and a night from most guests' trips.
The forwardable version of this conversation is the Fiji wedding guest cost sheet you can forward, and realistic attendance expectations are in how many guests actually come to a destination wedding.
Which part of Fiji suits a New Zealand guest list?
The deciding factor is usually how much travel you are willing to ask of people after a three- to four-hour flight.
| Region | Transfer from Nadi | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Denarau | Short road transfer | Mixed-age guest lists, tight schedules, late arrivals |
| Coral Coast | Road transfer, roughly an hour and a half to two | Larger groups wanting a resort feel without a boat |
| Mamanuca Islands | Catamaran, 15 min to 1 h 45 | Smaller groups, island imagery, one boat leg |
| Yasawa Islands | A full travel day each way | Small, unhurried, well-briefed groups only |
| Pacific Harbour | Longer road transfer from Nadi | Adventure-minded groups, quieter setting |
Resorts with established wedding operations across these regions include Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Shangri-La Yanuca Island on the Coral Coast, Plantation Island Resort and Matamanoa Island Resort in the Mamanucas, and The Pearl Resort at Pacific Harbour.
If an island is what you want, read how long it really takes to get between Fiji's islands first and build the travel day into the plan rather than discovering it later.
What is genuinely different about doing this from New Zealand?
The time zone is easy. Fiji runs ahead of New Zealand by a small margin that shifts with daylight saving, so you can call a venue inside your own working day. Australian couples have it harder. Use that — phone rather than email when something matters.
A site visit is affordable. A long weekend in Nadi from Auckland is a realistic thing to do before you commit six figures of guest travel, and it is the best money you will spend. If you cannot, insist on a video walk-through at your ceremony time of day, in your month.
Your suppliers may already know the market. A large share of Fiji's wedding business comes from New Zealand and Australia, so venue teams are used to Kiwi expectations around timing, contracts and directness. Hold them to it.
Cyclone season is a real conversation. Fiji's wet season overlaps the New Zealand summer holidays, which is exactly when many couples want to travel. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to read the honest cyclone risk guide and your Fiji wedding wet-weather plan before you choose a January date.
The order to do this in
- Check the flight days for Wellington and Christchurch guests, then choose a date window.
- Apply for a Certificate of No Impediment if Fiji requires one — three to five weeks at NZ BDM.
- Shortlist by region, not by resort photograph. Transfer time is what your guests will remember.
- Get quotes in FJD with every tax line shown separately, and a written note of the booking date for TST purposes.
- Send a guest cost sheet before you send save-the-dates, not after.
- Confirm your Fiji-side paperwork against the licence guide, with the residency days built into your travel dates.
The full planning sequence is in the order you should make Fiji wedding decisions in, and if you would rather compare every setting at once, start at Fiji wedding venues.
