Fiji already hosts the Pacific's financial supervision calendar. The Reserve Bank of Fiji and the IMF's Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre co-hosted the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Association of Financial Supervisors of Pacific Countries in Nadi from 7 to 11 September 2026, and in May 2026 the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the World Bank and the Reserve Bank of Fiji ran a three-day risk-based supervision workshop in Nadi on correspondent banking relationships.
If central bank governors and financial commissioners are already meeting here, your bank's regional conference can be held here too. The obstacle is rarely the venue. It is the board paper — and specifically the compliance and optics sections of it.
Why does Fiji work for a financial services conference?
Three reasons that hold up in a board paper.
It is the regional hub for financial supervision. The AFSPC annual meeting and the PIF/World Bank correspondent banking workshops are not one-offs — they reflect Fiji's position as the Pacific's financial-sector convening point. If your delegate base is Pacific-regional, Fiji is where the counterparties already travel.
Nadi handles the lift. International delegates arrive at Nadi International Airport and are in a resort conference room the same day. That matters for a sector where senior delegates are expensive to have in transit.
The venue inventory is genuine. Fiji publishes real function capacities at the scale a bank conference needs, with in-country AV production and the ballroom depth for plenary-plus-breakout programmes.
What Fiji does not offer is a purpose-built, independent convention centre of the kind Singapore or Sydney has. Fiji's large-event capacity sits inside resorts. For most financial-services programmes that is a feature — it keeps delegates contained — but say it plainly in the paper rather than letting someone discover it at site inspection. See does Fiji have a convention centre.
What is the compliance position on data and privacy?
This is the section that stops bank conferences, so take it seriously and get it right.
Fiji has no comprehensive data protection statute in force. The position, as summarised in DLA Piper's Data Protection Laws of the World (Fiji chapter, last modified 19 March 2026), is that "there is no specific legislation for personal data protection in Fiji." The constitutional baseline is section 24 of the 2013 Constitution, which provides a right to personal privacy, but the terms it covers — including "personal information" — are not otherwise defined.
What exists instead is a patchwork of sectoral confidentiality duties:
| Instrument | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Banking Act 1995, s.27 | Confidentiality obligations on central bank personnel |
| Banking Act 1995, s.71 | Confidentiality obligations on licensed financial institution personnel |
| Cybercrime Act 2021 | Defines "computer data", which may capture personal data on a computer system |
| Fiji Revenue and Customs Service Act 1998, s.52(2) | Confidentiality for tax officials |
| Constitution 2013, s.24 | Right to personal privacy |
The same source states plainly that these laws "do not directly protect personal information", and lists collection and processing, transfers, security, breach notification, enforcement, electronic marketing and online privacy as having "no applicable laws". There is no data protection authority and no registration or DPO requirement.
What that means for your event
It cuts both ways, and the honest reading is the useful one.
The risk is not Fijian law — it is your own. If you are an Australian, New Zealand or European institution, your obligations under the Privacy Act 1988, the Privacy Act 2020 or the GDPR travel with you. A delegate list, a registration database, a session recording and a photo wall are all personal data under your home regime regardless of where the server sits.
So the compliance work is yours to do. Practically: keep the registration platform in your home jurisdiction, treat any Fiji-side supplier handling delegate data as a processor under your own contracts, do a transfer impact assessment, and brief your AV and photography suppliers on consent in writing.
The banking secrecy provisions are real and criminal in character. Sections 27 and 71 of the Banking Act 1995 carry serious consequences for unauthorised disclosure by central bank and licensed institution personnel. If your programme includes Fijian regulators or local bank staff speaking on the record, that is their constraint to manage — but it will shape what they can say in a session, and it is better understood before the agenda is set than after.
Guideline only. This is a summary of published secondary material, not legal advice. Confirm your position with a Fiji-qualified practitioner and, for the regulatory side, with the Reserve Bank of Fiji. Last reviewed 14 October 2026.
What about security and duty of care?
For a financial-services delegation the questions are predictable and Fiji answers them reasonably well.
Venue security. Denarau is a gated resort precinct, which is a genuine advantage for a closed-door programme: access control exists before you install any. Central Suva venues are city hotels with the normal urban considerations.
Medical. Suva has the country's main hospital infrastructure; the western resort corridor is served from Nadi and Lautoka. For a senior delegation, map the nearest facility to your venue before you arrive and brief your organiser. See healthcare and emergency services by region and duty of care for delegates in Fiji.
Security and medical cover on site. Available through established suppliers — see security, medical and emergency cover at Fiji events.
Insurance and force majeure. Fiji sits in the cyclone belt, with cyclones forming mainly November to mid-May and most likely late December to early April. Any financial-services conference scheduled in that window needs a force majeure clause that names cyclone and a documented contingency. See event insurance for a Fiji conference, cancellation, force majeure and attrition clauses and what happens to a conference if there is a cyclone.
Which venues suit a banking or financial services conference?
The sector's requirements — secure plenary, real breakouts, reliable bandwidth, a dinner room that seats the plenary, and a city or gated setting — narrow the field usefully.
| Venue | Largest published plenary | Published banquet | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Pacific Hotel Suva | Britannia Ballroom, 600 theatre | 400 | Central Suva, 5-star, heritage setting, five breakouts; 113 rooms |
| Novotel Suva Lami Bay | Up to 800 theatre in largest room | 400 | Largest capital-region conference hotel; 108 rooms |
| Holiday Inn Suva | Lali Room, 250 theatre | 150 | Waterfront central Suva, three glass-walled rooms; 130 rooms |
| Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort | Denarau Island Convention Centre, ~1,755 m², up to 1,600 | — | Largest regional convention space; gated precinct; 297 rooms |
| The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa | Senirosi Ballroom, 200 theatre | 150 | Gated precinct, integrated Marriott complex; 246 rooms |
| Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa | Baravi 1, 370 theatre | 240 | Airport proximity, 324 rooms, business centre |
| Japan-Pacific ICT Centre | Multipurpose Theatre, 307 | — | USP Laucala campus; theatre with control room, HD video, in-house media |
Suva or Nadi is the real choice. Suva if your delegates are regulators, central banks, development partners or Fiji-based institutions — they are already there, and the Reserve Bank is there. Nadi or Denarau if delegates are flying in from Australia, New Zealand and Asia, because the airport transfer is minutes rather than hours. The AFSPC 2026 meeting and the correspondent banking workshop both chose Nadi, which tells you where the regional convening practice has landed.
See Suva or Nadi: choosing a Fiji conference city and Nausori Airport and the Suva access problem.
What connectivity does a finance conference need?
More than most, and this is worth testing rather than trusting. A bank conference typically needs live market data, secure VPN access for delegates, a hybrid feed for those who could not travel, and session recording.
Fiji's bandwidth is adequate for this, but "adequate" varies by venue and the published position is thin. Ask for a committed bandwidth figure, a dedicated event VLAN separate from guest Wi-Fi, and a service level with a named contact during the event. Do not accept "we have fibre". Our guides to internet and bandwidth at Fiji venues, is the internet good enough in Fiji for a hybrid conference and live streaming and hybrid delivery from Fiji cover what to specify. Power reliability and generator backup matters too — ask whether the generator covers the conference floor or only life safety.
AV production is available in-country at the standard this sector expects. Encore Event Technologies Fiji is the in-house partner at leading Denarau and Nadi resorts; Microhire works as a venue AV partner including at the Sheraton Denarau; Stage Tech Fiji and UPER Group cover Suva.
How do you get the board to approve it?
Financial-services boards approve Fiji when the paper answers five questions before they are asked.
- Why not a mainland capital? Answer with the regional-hub point: Pacific financial supervision already convenes here, and your counterparties travel here.
- What is the data position? Answer with the honest summary above — no Fijian data protection statute, so your home regime governs and you have designed for it.
- What is the optics risk? A resort venue invites "junket" framing. Mitigate by choosing a city or convention-centre setting, publishing the agenda, and keeping the social programme proportionate and ideally community-linked. A CSR or legacy element does real work here — see CSR and legacy activities for incentive groups and local sourcing and community benefit.
- What is the cyclone exposure? Answer with the season dates, the chosen month, and the force majeure clause.
- What does it cost against the alternatives? See cost comparison: Fiji vs Australia vs New Zealand vs Bali and what a Fiji conference costs per delegate. All venue pricing is in Fijian dollars; the Reserve Bank of Fiji sets the FJD–USD official rate at 9.00am each business day and publishes it as indicative only, so convert on the day you contract.
The template is in building the business case for Fiji to your board.
Next steps
Set the month first — outside the cyclone peak if the board is risk-averse. Then choose Suva or Nadi on where your delegates actually are. Then issue an RFP that asks for committed bandwidth, a secure event network, banquet capacity matching your plenary, and a force majeure clause naming cyclone. The Fiji conference RFP template covers it.
