Fiji has very few genuine overwater bures — a handful of properties, not a category. The honest list runs to about six resorts, the definition of "overwater" varies meaningfully between them, and not one publishes a nightly rate on its own website. If you are set on waking up above water in Fiji, you are choosing between a small number of options and you will be requesting prices rather than comparing them.

That is a smaller and more complicated picture than most round-ups suggest, and it is worth having before you fall in love with a photograph.

Which Fiji resorts actually have overwater accommodation?

The table below is compiled from a published Fiji travel guide, because the resorts themselves largely do not publish unit counts. Where we could check a claim against the resort's own site, that is noted. Treat the counts as indicative and confirm them with the property.

Koro Sun Resort and La Dolce Vita Holiday Villas do not hold verified listings in the MICE Fiji directory, so we are naming them from the published guide rather than from our own verification. Check both directly.

Is Likuliku the only overwater resort in Fiji?

No, and this is the most persistent piece of misinformation about Fiji honeymoons.

Likuliku is routinely described as Fiji's only overwater bures. Its own website makes a narrower and accurate claim: it is "the first adult only resort in Fiji with authentic over-water bures". First, and adults-only, and authentic — not only.

That distinction matters because it is doing real work. Likuliku is genuinely the benchmark: adults-only, stilted bures directly over a lagoon, and the property most people picture when they picture an overwater Fiji honeymoon. But if your booking decision rests on there being no alternative, the alternatives exist.

What does "overwater" actually mean at each property?

Three different things, and the photographs do not distinguish them.

Fully over water, permanently. Stilted or floating structures with water beneath them at all tides. This is what buyers think they are getting.

Over water at high tide only. La Dolce Vita's villas are published as being above the lagoon except at low tide, which means part of the day you are above wet sand. Not a fault, but not the photograph either.

Over water in part. Musket Cove's Lagoon Bures are described as not completely over the water, with decking that extends over an inland canal rather than the open lagoon. That is a lovely room; it is not an overwater bure in the Likuliku sense.

The question to ask every property, in writing, is simple: is there water directly beneath the bure's floor at low tide, and is it open lagoon or an inland channel? Two sentences of answer will tell you more than any gallery.

What does an overwater bure cost in Fiji?

We cannot tell you, and nor can anyone honestly, because no Fiji overwater property publishes a nightly rate on its own site that we could verify. Likuliku's site carries "Bure Rates" and "Packages" links but no prices in the page text. The others are the same.

The only published figure we found anywhere is a general market indication in a third-party guide: Fiji overwater bungalows "generally start at around US$600 per night", with the most exclusive options running to several thousand dollars a night. That is a useful order of magnitude and it is not a figure to budget against — it is unattributed, in US dollars, undated and not resort-specific.

What you should do instead:

  1. Request a quote for your exact dates from each property. Overwater inventory is tiny, so rates move with availability more sharply than at a large resort.
  2. Ask what the minimum stay is. Likuliku is published as carrying a three-night minimum, and minimums are common across this category.
  3. Ask what is included. Several of these properties are effectively all-inclusive or near it, which makes a headline nightly rate meaningless as a comparison. See Fiji honeymoons: all-inclusive resorts.
  4. Price the transfers separately. A Mamanuca property is a boat or seaplane from Nadi; a Vanua Levu or northern property is a domestic flight plus a transfer. Those are not small numbers on a short honeymoon.

Fiji honeymoon costs itemised breaks down the whole picture rather than just the room.

Is an overwater bure worth it?

Honestly, for some couples and not others, and the deciding factors are practical rather than romantic.

It is worth it if the room is the point of the trip, you are staying three nights or more in it, and you want privacy above everything. The appeal is real: you step off your own deck into the lagoon, and nobody walks past.

It is worth less than you think if you are splitting a two-week honeymoon across three properties, in which case two nights overwater is a lot of money for a short stay, or if you are a couple who will be out diving, sailing and on day trips from early morning. You are paying a substantial premium for a room you will barely be in.

It is worth reconsidering if you want a beachfront bure with a plunge pool instead. Fiji does this extremely well and at materially lower cost, and several of the island resorts — Matamanoa Island Resort and Tokoriki Island Resort among them — are adults-oriented, quiet and directly on sand. For a lot of couples that is the better honeymoon.

What about getting married in one?

The overwater structures are accommodation rather than ceremony venues, and the properties above run their weddings on beaches, lawns and in chapels like everyone else. If you want the ceremony itself over water — on a pier, a deck or an overwater pavilion — that is a different and slightly larger list. See the best overwater wedding venues in Fiji and the best pier wedding venues in Fiji.

One combination worth knowing about: Likuliku is adults-only, which rules it out as a wedding venue for anyone with children on the guest list, but makes it a strong honeymoon property for a couple marrying elsewhere in the Mamanucas and moving across afterwards.

So what should you do?

If overwater is non-negotiable, request dates and rates from Likuliku and Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay first — the two best-documented options, one island and adults-only, one close to Nadi and easy to reach. Then approach Koro Sun directly about the Edgewater bures if you want the northern islands.

If you want overwater but have four nights or fewer, book it as the whole honeymoon rather than as a two-night segment, or spend the money on a better beachfront bure for the full stay.

Before you book anything, ask the water-at-low-tide question in writing, confirm the minimum stay, and get the transfer cost. Those three answers will settle the decision faster than any amount of looking at photographs.
