Around 20 guests is the hardest number in a Fiji wedding. You are past the elopement packages, which are priced for two, and short of the numbers that make a resort's function space pay for itself. The venues that handle it well are the ones small enough that 20 people feel like exclusive use.

Which Fiji venues publish a maximum of 20 to 30 guests?

Most Fiji resorts publish no ceremony maximum at all, which is why planning a 20-guest wedding starts with the handful that do. Five properties in the MICE Fiji directory state a figure at or just above 20, and the number means different things at each.

Navutu Stars FijiYasawa Islands2510Yes — charter for about 25

Two things stand out. At Sau Bay and Kulu Bay the published maximum of 20 is effectively the resort's own ceiling — seven bures each — so a 20-guest wedding is a buyout whether or not anyone calls it one. At Yatule and The Terraces, 30 is a function capacity inside a larger resort, which means other guests are still on site and your ceremony sits in a slot rather than owning the day.

Navutu Stars is the middle case: ten bures, adults-only above age eleven, and a published exclusive charter for around 25 people. That is the cleanest fit for 20 guests in the country, and it is in the Yasawas, which carries a transfer cost we come back to below.

What does a 20-guest wedding actually cost in Fiji?

Only a few Fiji resorts publish wedding prices at all. Yatule is the most transparent in the directory and makes a useful benchmark because its headline package is scoped to exactly this guest band.

Yatule's All Inclusive package is published at FJD$12,915, covering ceremony and reception for up to 30 people, an island buffet, a three-hour standard beverage package, a private reception venue with setup, a one-tier cake, overhead lighting and three nights in a beachfront bure with breakfast. Additional adults are F$215 each and children aged three to eleven F$99.

At 20 guests you are inside that package rather than adding to it, which is the single most useful thing to know about this guest count: the first 30 heads are often already paid for. Moving from 20 to 25 guests may cost nothing; moving from 30 to 40 costs ten times F$215.

Conversions use the Reserve Bank of Fiji indicative rates of 8 October 2026 (FJ$1 = NZ$0.7884, A$0.6343, US$0.4416) and will move. Note the shape of that table: the Tokoriki, Tropica and Remote Resort figures are ceremony packages built around a couple, not receptions for 20. Adding 18 more people to any of them is a separate catered event the resorts quote on request, and none publishes a per-head reception rate. Ask for it in writing before you compare venues.

Where does the minimum spend bite at 20 guests?

This is the trap specific to this number. A resort with a dedicated function space wants that space to earn, so it sets a food and beverage minimum. Twenty guests rarely clears it.

What you will be offered instead is a long table in a restaurant, a section of a deck, or a private dinner on the sand. That is often genuinely better than a half-empty ballroom — but it is not exclusive use, and the distinction matters when a resort's marketing photographs show an empty beach.

The questions that settle it:

  • Is there a food and beverage minimum, and what is the figure at our date?
  • If we do not reach it, what are we charged — the shortfall, a venue fee, or nothing?
  • Does 20 guests get a private space, or a reserved area inside a public one?
  • How many other weddings can be held on the same day?
  • What time must the function end? Yatule publishes a 10.30pm finish with the bar open later; most resorts have a similar curfew and few advertise it.

Is it cheaper to buy out a small resort instead?

Often, yes — and at 20 guests it is the move most couples have not costed. A seven-bure property like Sau Bay or a ten-bure property like Navutu Stars is sized so that your guest list fills it. You stop paying for function space, exclusivity surcharges and a wedding co-ordinator's time to manage around other guests, and start paying for rooms you were going to book anyway.

The arithmetic turns on room nights, not on the ceremony. Twenty guests in ten bures for three nights is 30 bure-nights; price that against the same guests scattered through a 250-room resort plus a function minimum, and the small property frequently wins. Neither Sau Bay nor Navutu Stars publishes a buyout rate, so both need a direct quote.

The trade-off is access. Navutu Stars sits on Yaqeta Island in the Yasawas, reached by seaplane, helicopter or boat; Sau Bay is off Taveuni. Twenty guests travelling by light aircraft or boat transfer is a real line item and a real half-day each way. Build a rest day around it rather than pretending it is not there — see how long it really takes to get between Fiji's islands before you fix a date.

What about the big resorts — can they do 20 guests well?

They can, provided you go in knowing you are buying a slot rather than a venue. Yatule Resort & Spa publishes ceremony times of 3.30pm or 4.30pm and has a chapel available for hire for cocktail events, which gives a wet-weather answer most small properties cannot match. The Terraces Fiji on Denarau Island puts 30 rooms and a 30-guest ceiling ten minutes from Nadi's suppliers, which removes almost all transfer risk.

That proximity is worth more than it sounds at this guest count. With 20 guests you are likely bringing in your own celebrant, florist and photographer rather than taking a resort's full package, and suppliers price travel by distance. Check the venue's outside-vendor policy first; our list of outside-vendor-friendly venues is the shortcut.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose a small-resort buyout — Sau Bay, Kulu Bay, Navutu Stars — if exclusivity matters more than convenience and your guests will accept a transfer day each way.
  • Choose Yatule if you want a published price, a chapel as wet-weather cover and a reception for 20 that is already inside the package.
  • Choose The Terraces if guests are flying in tight, want minimal transfers, and you intend to bring your own suppliers.
  • Choose Tokoriki or Tropica if the 20 are adults and a boutique island matters, accepting that you will be quoting the reception separately.

Whichever way you go, get the food and beverage minimum, the function end time and the outside-vendor policy in writing before you pay a deposit. Those three answers decide a 20-guest wedding more than the venue photographs do.
