The Mamanucas are the island group you can actually reach. Port Denarau is about 25 to 30 minutes by road from Nadi International Airport, and from there a catamaran puts you on a Mamanuca beach in 45 minutes to two hours. No other Fijian island group combines that proximity with that many resorts - which is why the Mamanucas carry most of Fiji's island weddings and incentive programmes.

How do you get to the Mamanucas, and what does it cost?

Everything departs Port Denarau. These are published figures, taken from operator and resort sites.

At the 1 October 2026 mid-market rate of about FJ$1 = NZ$0.78 / A$0.64, that FJ$166 catamaran fare is roughly NZ$130 or A$106 each way.

Three things follow from this table, and they are the three things planners get wrong.

The scheduled catamaran has departure times, not frequencies. South Sea Cruises publishes departures at 09:30, 12:15 and 15:15 for Malolo. If your guests land at 19:00, they are not going to the island that night - they are staying near Nadi at their own cost. Build your arrival instructions around the last sailing, not around the flight you found cheapest.

Direct and routed are different products at the same price. The 15:15 runs 55 minutes direct; the 12:15 takes about two hours because it calls elsewhere first. Same fare, 65 minutes of difference. Ask which service your booking is on.

Water taxis and on-demand boats run around the clock. SeaFiji and Mamanuca Express both operate 24/7, which is the answer to a delayed flight - at FJ$952 to FJ$1,273 for up to four people rather than FJ$166 a head. That is the real cost of a late arrival, and it is worth telling your group before they book.

Helicopters are the fastest option and the least reliable one for arrival night, because they are daylight-only and weather dependent. Use them for the couple, the chief executive or the keynote speaker - not for the group.

Which resorts are in the Mamanucas?

These are the properties in our directory, with the figures we hold. Room counts are the single most useful number here, because on an island your room inventory is your guest list ceiling.

Recorded wedding capacities, where we hold them: Musket Cove at 100 overall, with its Island Chapel seating 80 for a ceremony and Coral Cay Island taking 100; Lomani at 67; Tropica at 60 on a full resort charter.

On how many islands the group contains: public sources disagree, and we have not found a figure we are confident enough to publish. The number that matters is how many have resorts and how long each takes from Port Denarau. For the wider context, see Fiji's 333 Islands, Explained.

Who do the Mamanucas suit?

Weddings

This is the group's strongest case. Four of the thirteen resorts above have an on-site chapel, which is Fiji's answer to the wet-weather problem - a chapel is a ceremony that happens regardless. Musket Cove's offshore cay at 100 is the largest island ceremony capacity we hold in the group, and Likuliku's five recorded settings, including over-water and a private island, give the most variety at one property.

The transfer is the constraint. At published fares, 50 guests returning on the scheduled catamaran is in the order of FJ$17,600 - a real line in the budget, and one most couples discover late. See what FJ$10,000, FJ$25,000 and FJ$60,000 buy you.

Incentives

Excellent, and arguably better here than anywhere else in Fiji. Short transfers mean you are not spending a programme day in transit; the island setting means delegates are genuinely somewhere; and the water activity is on the doorstep, with operators including Cloud 9 Fiji, Subsurface Fiji and Purple Turtle Fiji all based in the group. Cloud 9 publishes a 09:00 departure arriving 09:45, which is about as easy as a half-day gets in Fiji.

Conferences

Honestly: no, past about 50 people. We hold no large purpose-built function space anywhere in the Mamanucas, and the biggest room inventory in the group is Mana at 160. A 200 or 300-delegate plenary needs the mainland or Denarau - see Fiji Venues That Can Hold 200 Delegates and Does Fiji Have a Convention Centre?.

Where the Mamanucas do work for business events is the second half of a split programme: conference ON Denarau Island, then move the group to an island for the reward nights. The transfer is short enough that the move costs you half a day rather than a whole one.

Families and day trippers

Strong. The group's proximity is what makes it the day-trip destination from Denarau, covered in Day Trip Islands From Denarau.

What should you watch out for?

Captive dining. On a small island you eat where you are. That is fine if you have negotiated a meal plan and priced it; it is expensive if you have not.

Weather closing the water. Boats and helicopters both stop when conditions require it. If your event has a fixed date and a non-negotiable start time, build a buffer day - and read Cyclone Season in Fiji before choosing a month.

Timetables that do not connect. The published schedules are built for leisure travellers, not for groups arriving on one flight. This is a recurring problem across both island groups and it is covered properly in The Mamanuca and Yasawa Ferry Timetable Problem.

Room inventory as a hard ceiling. You cannot overflow an island. If your group is 120 people, there are two resorts in the table above that can hold them, and you will be competing for the dates.

The verdict

Choose the Mamanucas if you want an island without losing a day to reach it. Forty-five minutes to two hours from Port Denarau is the shortest island commute in Fiji, and the resort list runs from 16 rooms to 160, which means the group can hold a two-person elopement and a 100-guest wedding equally well.

Choose elsewhere if you need a plenary room, if your group is large enough that room inventory becomes the problem, or if your guests are arriving on late international flights and you would rather they drove to their accommodation than waited for a boat.
