The sequence that works is: wedding, one shared recovery day, guests fly out, you change islands the next morning. Moving resorts is what ends the wedding and starts the honeymoon — staying in the same bure while forty people check out around you is the awkward middle day everyone warns about and nobody plans against.
The mechanics in Fiji are ferry timetables, 10am check-outs and minimum-night packages. Get those three lined up and the rest looks after itself.
Why does the day after feel so strange?
Because three things end at once and nothing has been booked to replace them. The coordinator who has run your week hands back; the people you have been hosting leave in staggered groups; and the resort reverts to being a resort. If you have not moved, you are in the room where you got ready, eating the same breakfast, with a quarter of the guests still there and nothing to do together.
It is not a tragedy. It is just a gap, and it is entirely avoidable.
What are the four sequences, and which should you choose?
| Sequence | How it runs | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Stay put | Guests depart around you over two or three days | Lowest — no second transfer, no second resort | Short trips, small guest counts, couples who genuinely want family time |
| B. Change islands the morning after guests leave | One recovery day together, farewell breakfast, guests out, you transfer next morning | Moderate — one extra transfer, second resort at honeymoon rate | Most couples. Clean break, no dead day |
| C. Guests out first, you stay two more nights, then move | Guests leave the day after the wedding; you have the resort to yourselves briefly | Moderate | Couples who want to decompress before travelling again |
| D. Leave Fiji together, honeymoon later | Everyone flies home; honeymoon booked separately | Lowest in Fiji, higher overall | Couples with work or childcare constraints, or saving for a bigger trip |
Choose B unless you have a reason not to. The one recovery day matters — it is when the photographs get looked at and the thank-yous get said — and transferring the morning after means you never experience the half-empty resort.
Do not choose A if your wedding was IN the Mamanucas or IN the Yasawas on a small island. Intimacy that is wonderful with your family there is confronting when they have gone.
How do the transfer mechanics actually constrain you?
This is the part that decides your dates.
Ferries run on a published timetable. Transfers from Port Denarau Marina to Castaway Island, for example, depart at 9.30am, 12.15pm and 3.15pm, on a crossing of about 90 minutes, with check-in 30 minutes before departure. Island-to-island movements usually mean going via Denarau or paying for a private boat.
Check-out is 10am and check-in is 2pm. At Castaway Island Resort both apply. Read those two numbers together with the ferry times and the problem is obvious: check out at 10am, catch the 12.15 boat, arrive Denarau at about 1.45pm, then transfer onward. If your next resort is IN the Yasawas, you are not arriving the same afternoon unless you fly.
Private water taxis buy you the schedule back. Mamanuca Express runs a private service from Port Denarau Marina for up to 30 passengers, available 24/7 with custom departure times. For a honeymoon transfer that is an indulgence; for moving a wedding party on a tight day it is the thing that makes the day work.
Helicopters compress everything. Island Hoppers flies from Nadi airport to Castaway in about 10 minutes, with advance reservations required. If your honeymoon island is remote and your days are few, a one-way flight in and a boat out is often the right split.
Minimum nights are built into your wedding package. Castaway's Ultimate and Intimate packages include four nights in an island bure for the couple. Plantation Island's Vakamau and Domoni packages include four nights, and the Domoni Upgrade five. Those nights are usually consumed by the wedding, not the honeymoon — check whether yours start before or after the ceremony before you book the second resort.

What should the recovery day look like?
One shared thing, in the morning, that nobody has to dress for.
A farewell breakfast works better than a lunch or a dinner, because departures start in the early afternoon and a dinner excludes half the group. Book it, name a time, and put it on the wedding website so nobody has to ask — see what to put on your Fiji wedding website.
Then leave the rest of the day empty. Your guests want a swim and a nap, and so do you. An organised activity on day two is the most reliably resented item on a destination wedding itinerary.
What errands have to be done before you move?
Four, and they are all easier on the mainland than on an island.
- Authenticate the marriage certificate. Get the apostille from Fiji's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade before you leave the country. Doing it later from overseas is slower. Fiji marriage certificates: copies, apostilles and legalisation has the process.
- Settle and split the bills. Resort accounts, bar credits, supplier balances. Do it the night before you move, not at 9.50am on check-out morning.
- Draw cash. Small island resorts often have no ATM — Castaway has none, and cash is requested at reception and charged to the room. Sort your money on the mainland. Money in Fiji: currency, cards, ATMs and tipping covers it.
- Deal with the dress. Decide before the wedding whether it flies home with a parent, gets packed, or gets professionally handled. It is the single most common thing couples carry awkwardly across two more resorts.
Where should the honeymoon half be?
The useful rule: change the character of the place, not just the postcode. A second beach resort 40 minutes along the same coast reads as more of the same.
- Mamanucas to Yasawas — quieter, further, longer transfer. Yasawa Island Resort and Navutu Stars Fiji are both IN the Yasawas.
- Mainland or Mamanucas to a small island — Matamanoa Island Resort, Tokoriki Island Resort, Vomo Island Fiji and Navini Island Resort IN the Mamanucas; Likuliku Lagoon Resort for overwater.
- Beach to rainforest or dive — Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa and Tides Reach Resort in Taveuni and Vanua Levu; Toberua Island Resort IN Fiji's Outer Islands.
- Beach to villa — Nanuku Resort at Pacific Harbour.
The second-island move also solves a budget problem: wedding-week accommodation is often dictated by what suits forty guests, which is rarely what suits two people. Moving lets you spend the honeymoon money on the honeymoon.
Compare properly in Fiji honeymoons: overwater bures, adults-only resorts and itineraries for 7, 10 and 14 nights.
What will the second half cost?
Two things to budget that couples miss.
The transfer. An island-to-island move is frequently two transfers via Denarau plus a wait, or one private boat. Price it as a line, not an afterthought.
The taxes. Fiji charges 12.5% VAT plus the 5% Tourism Services Tax introduced on 1 September 2026, applying to hotels and operators turning over FJ$2 million or more. Some resorts add both at check-in rather than showing them in the advertised rate — Castaway's own FAQ says exactly that. Ask before you book. The sequence, written out
- Wedding day.
- Day 1: farewell breakfast, then nothing. Settle accounts in the evening.
- Day 2: guests transfer and fly. You stay the night.
- Day 3: 10am check-out, mid-morning boat or flight, arrive at the honeymoon resort for afternoon check-in.
Four nights of wedding, one clean break, and a honeymoon that starts on a different island with nobody you have to host.
Next step
Build the dates from the ferry timetable backwards, not from your leave backwards. Start at the Fiji honeymoon guide, then confirm transfers with the operators in the directory — Mamanuca Express, SeaFiji and Yasawa Adventures Fiji — and check your guests' side against getting guests to Fiji: flights from Australia and New Zealand.
